Little bit of gold and a pager.

coolkids Little bit of gold and a pager.

Cool Kids hail from Chicago, Illinoise & bring that old school rap style back to the forefront. Aside from recently making it on to URB magazine’s next top 1000 artist list, they are talking with several labels including Fool’s Gold (home of A-Trak & Kid Sister) but have yet to sign with anyone. So like their song says, I’m sure they got a little bit of gold & a pager.

Chris over at gorilla vs. bear posted their track ‘Mikey Rocks’ earlier this week.
Thanks Chris for keeping us point.

Actual Rave.

rave Actual Rave.

Everyone’s talking new rave this & new rave that. Can’t help but be reminded of old rave, or as I like to call it actual rave. I partook in my fair share of parties & even had a short term career in the field of street pharmacy, which ended up with a brief stay in the big house. I have since reformed my ways, got rid of anything I owned that glowed in the daylight & stayed as far away from dark, damp warehouses as possible. However I still kept all my old vinyl, & every now & then I take a trip (ha, trip) down ‘what I can remember’ lane. Here’s a few cuts that were in every dj’s arsenal back in the day.

(these are vinyl rips, the needles are pristine, but some of the vinyl isn’t. If you hear some cracks & pops. My bad.)

Prezioso – Raise Your Power (TEC T) (Download)
Remember the Mortal Kombat soundtrack? This shoulda been on there.

As with most old dance records you have a few option as to where you can get them, old collectors, dig through crates for hours or spend a little dough on shipping & get them shipped to you from the source of dance music; Europe. Best sites to obtain records like this: HTFR, Juno, Satellite, Humpty & Dance Records. If those links fail you hit up ebay.

So, in your opinions which is a better musical movement, old rave or new rave, or no rave? Let’s discuss.

New Crystal Castles song?!

DJ Taj – Bamabounce – Wu-Tang Slide

By the amount of hits we got on Bird Peterson’s remix of Wu-Tang’s “Aint Nuthin’ To F’ Wit”, seems like you guys got mad love for the Wu. We don’t have any new tracks from the Killa Bee’s, but hopefully this electro-tech, b’more gem will appease your ipod’s thirst for Wu themed anthems.

Mad Repeaterz: Drop The Lime – Butterscotch

dropthelime2 Mad Repeaterz: Drop The Lime Butterscotch

Yeah we just posted some Drop The Lime the other day & we’re posting some mo’. But we just gotsta. We’ve had the ‘Let’s Lasertag Sometime’ compilation from Tigerbeat6 for some time now, we even wrote a post on it.

But you know how you buy a shitload of cd’s and once and you give them all a few listens, then they get lost among the masses. Well, that happened with this CD. From the tracklist I knew it was gonna be an awesome comp & it is, but I was cleaning up the apartment the other day & found CD again & threw it in the stereo & I’m hooked. So this weeks Mad Repeaterz track is DTL’s Butterscotch.

Unsigned Hype: Fluffy Target

2007 03 28 FluffyTarget Unsigned Hype: Fluffy Target

As promised, in the previous Avenue D post, we have more Fluffy Target, our favorite sex’d up indie duo in Berlin. How sex’d up are they? Very! How indie are they? Very! So sex’d up they probably reek from all the sexy sex they get and so indie they don’t even have an indie label! Being without a label hasn’t clipped their wings a bit, they’re flying high with great production, fun songs and have done that fantastic remix for Avenue D and have been remixed by the sex’d up Princess Superstar, DJs Are Not Rockstars, and the Belgian stronghold, Das Pop. Fluffy Target slid me their full-length demo via snail mail (mad Euros in postage, how nice!) and it’s been in heavy in the rotation at my house for sure—I wish some nice label would come along and help the world hear it! Here’s a teaser until that happens. I present one of their original tracks and a remix of it:

You can hear more Fluffy Target by visiting their MySpace page or stream their whole demo on this page.

P.S. Oh and Fluffy Target is actually the side project of some very established DJ/producers with many albums and credits under their collective belt. Look up the names Richard Cameron & Achim Treu if you’re truly curious, you’ll find some more good music.

The wisdom of Bushwick Bill: F*ck a War

2007 03 27 Geto Boys The wisdom of Bushwick Bill: F*ck a War

The US has been at war in Iraq for just over four years now. Chances are you already knew that and you don’t like it. Today, the democrat-led US congress narrowly voted for an end of the war by withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by next March. Of course, our scumbag president immediately threatened to veto the Senate’s bill when it reaches him, so I’d call the bill D.O.A. at the White House, but it’s a start and maybe our president with get a F’ing clue. An expanded real journalist account of all of the aforementioned at CNN.com’s article.

Bushwick Bill wrapped up his thoughts about the first Iraq war, which, of course, was led by our current president’s daddy, the first President Geroge W. Bush, in 1991’s protest track ‘Fuck a War’. This track really gets me fired up, although I can’t say Bushwick speaks for us Missingtoofers when he gets on the just-blow-everything-the-fuck-up rant. But, he does have some poignant statements, or if nothing else, we hope you find the track entertaining.

MP3: Geto Boys – Fuck a War

One of the most under-rated rap groups don’tcha think? Geto Boys were the group that proved that it wasn’t just L.A. and N.Y. that could produce a great and unique hip-hop sound (they’re from Houston, Texas). Here’s one more track off the the same album, their forth release, 1991’s ‘We Can’t Be Stopped’ album. It’s definitely their most popular cut and features the whole group, that being Bushwick Bill, Willie D (n.k.a. Big Mike) and Scarface.

MP3: Geto Boys – Mind Playing Tricks on Me

And the video:

Music trivia! That album cover pictured above was taken right after Bushwick Bill’s attempted suicide, where he shot himself in the face permanently destroying his right eye vision! Keeping it very real, indeed.

Even more trivia! Geto Boys were the first rap group to be censored, two years earlier than 2 Live Crew or Ice-T. Luckily, Rick Ruben (of Def Jam) saved the day and the rest is hip-hop history and Rick Ruben is a Spank Rock track and Fuck a War and peace out!

Visit Geto Boys on MySpace, Wikipedia and at their record label Rap-A-Lot.

‘We Can’t Be Stopped’ and other early Geto Boys albums were re-released in recent years, to compliment their new records which are still hot. You can find everything on Amazon or your favorite well-stocked retailer. Additionally, Turntablelab.com has some O.G. ‘Mind Playing Tricks on Me’ 12″ singles with an instrumental b-side. Hot!

Let’s Get Physical.

A new compilation was released this month which is dedicated to Oliva Netwon John’s sexy ode to cupcaking. She’s gotta be pushing 60, but we’d still get physical with her.

New Wave Tuesday: Geza X

gezax New Wave Tuesday: Geza X

We revisit the Los Angeles punk scene again this week. Geza (real first name) was a sought after producer in the late 70’s early 80’s. He adopted the ‘X’ at the end of his name as a tribute to Malcolm X. He produced albums for many well know punk bands such as Dead Kennedys, The Germs & Black Flag & played in The Bags (a female fronted group who wore bags over their heads).

In 1982 he released his only solo album ‘You Goddamn Kids’ with the Mommymen providing instrumental backing who Paul Roessler of The Screamers, and later Nervous Gender played keys for.

Here’s a video clip of Geza X & The Mommymen performing Isotope Soap on New Wave Theatre.

Ed Banger Tour: Recap!

Everyone’s been asking how the Ed Banger party was, but needless to say it was nothing short of outstanding. Words could not even describe the events that took place that night. Our parents have Styx tickets forever framed in their scrapbooks, our generation will have yellowing Justice ticket stubs to show off to our grandchildren.

Here’s a video clip from the night that will live on in infamy. Video by Peter Noble of TheGentleKing.com who is SF’s premier dance party videographer.

The fabulous frenchies played insane re-edits of all the Ed Banger classics & dance faves like Gossip & Green Velvet. Then they dipped in to some old school cuts, such as Rage Against the Machine which had everyone in the crowd chanting ‘This is for the people of the sun’! Then they pulled out all the stops & threw on some old school rave cuts. I was pretty toasty by this time, but I swear they played 1995’s ‘Are Am Eye’ a.k.a. NOOM 13.

Anyone else remember this track?! It was either this or Nuclear Hyde or an Ed Banger re-edit of one of the two?!. If it was in fact this track, The EB’s brought the track in at the break around (4:15)

This shit is mad old so might have to dig in some crates to find it, or find a record collector who has one (like me!). Sometimes copies pop up on ebay. If you have a copy that you want to sell HTFR.COM will buy it off you.
