The street market is back! Those of you who came out last summer know that San Jo needs events like this. Downtowners ride your bikes over for 3 great bands, art and merch from local vendors, and an all-around good time.
bands: Thee Mansion (gentle music from the mind of Matt Henneuse)
Deservers (up and coming indie rockers from Modesto)
'Dance music is my wife!' goes the chorus on this electro banger by French trio Sexual Earthquake in Kobe. Actually, dance music is better than a wifey, it will leave you hot & sweaty & gasping for air but you dont gotta buy it dinner first. Either way these kids bring the sex to this blissful marriage of indie & electro. Remix by Toxic Avenger.
Visit SEIK's myspace to stream and download four more tracks that will also give you that post coital feeling. Thanks to Cameron @ Disconap for putting me in the know.
The girls from Dead Disco sound magical, look it too. With their new track they venture out from their indie hipster roots and try on some pants that are a bit poppier but still staying true to their sound. This remix is by FrankMusik.
Basura was named one of URB's top 10 dj's to watch out for in 2001 for his series of IDM mixes tapes which he put out a gaggle of back in the day. But Basura ain't the only Toofer who knows a thing or three about IDM. I also used to spend the majority of my spare time lurking in the experimental/IDM section of music stores & ran across a few diamonds.
One of my long time faves has to be SF based producer/artist Twerk who not only creates dreamy/creamy landscapes with his music, he also creates software which can help you to procreate your own tunes. A lot of the sounds he uses are gathered using a DAT whilst traveling around the city & later manipulated using custom built equipment & software.
Visit AudilbleOddities, his mastering house to get your shit straight hooked up, and click on the the 'Twerk' tab to see his discography & the software I was telling you about. You can re-up on a few of his albums on Amazon.
Miss Meliss a.k.a. Kid Sister gets her 'Pro Nails' track guestspotted by Kanye West himself. We're un-sure how this track came to be, Kanye says in the intro of the song that A-Trak didn't get him to do it, he just loves this shit. & we do too, kanye!
At this rate we might not be seeing Kid Sister gracing next years SXSW or our little dive bars & clubs. Big props to Iheartcomix and My!Gay!Husband! for dropping musical science.
Thank you, The Rub! Brooklyn heavyweight DJs Ayres, Cosmo Baker & Eleven, collectively known as The Rub, have recently created an eleven part mix series for BrooklynRadio.net that blends the bestest and most favoritest hip-hop tracks from each year; 1979 to 1889!
Let's start at the top of the list. For your listening pleasure: Rub Radio History of Hip-Hop: Volume 1: 1979 (and only 1979!):
Tracklist:
Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five – Superappin'
You can (and should!) stream/download the other 10 mixes for years 1980-1989 (as well as many other mixes) from The Rub's page on BrooklynRadio.net and grab the tracklist for each mix from this Low-Bee forum post. These mixes should be in some expensive legacy box set—but they're not! They're free so grab them now! And The Rub promises to tackle years 1990 and beyond this summer so stay tuned.
Visit The Rub at MySpace and stream more tracks. Visit their online store and buy their remix albums, mix albums or the 'Sunglasses is a Must' double-disc album they cut with A-Trak.
Louisville dancer rockers VHS or Beta are slated to release their third album 'Bring On The Comets' August 28th. If you were awake anytime during 2004 you are likely to remember their dance club hit 'Night On Fire'.
I'm excited to hear more from these boys. They are currently doing Dj tours, one of which recently hit SF at RX Gallery, they launch a full on North America tour that coincides with the albums release date.
Visit them on myspace to stream tracks, keep an eye out of dates and get ideas for your next haircut. If for some reason you don't own this CD yet Amazon can help you remedy that.
The creator of 2006's hip hop ode to skateboarding drops a new track which features Pharrell & Kanye & also a massive sampling of Thom Yorke's Eraser. 'The Eraser' was my most listened to album of last year (check my last.fm stats) so you know I had to post this. It's still unclear to me if this is just a mash some created or a real release, but either way, it's good.
The Hood Internet has been keepin' it trill with their masterful mash work. Their musical knowledge and creativity never ceases to amaze. Here's a new work which STV SLV was kind enough to send to us first before posting it on their site. I would say this is an 'exclusive' but internet exclusives is so 2006.
And this past weekend while you were getting drunk on cheap beer and trying to holler at your best friends little sister ABX & DJ STV SLV spent much of it working on a Hood Internet mixtape tentatively titled "DOUBLE POINTS". It's got some tracks that have been up on The Hood'Net plus some never before heard ish.
Girlfriends get mad. It's inevitable. The trick is not to not make your girlfriend mad, that's an excersize in futility. The trick is to figure out the fastest way to make your girlfriend un-mad. In my days I've figured out that a well planned mixtape can sometimes work wonders, but since the days of mixtapery are quickly dying, a well thought out ipod playlist works just as well.
So no matter what you did, throw some of these tracks on a CD for your girl, pick some flowers from the neighbors yard and you should be cupcaking in no time, that is unless you tried to wrong hole her. If you did, then you're on your own.
