Shinichi Owsawa – “The One” / Bunny Lake, Mighty Dub Kats, Plaid & Basement Jaxx Remixes

If you never noticed, we’ve had a series of Shinichi Osawa songs hooked up on our Missingtoof MySpace page for a long time now. And since you didn’t notice, better recognize now! Shinichi Osawa is the truth!

Shinichi Osawa has been making music since 1991, when he went by the name Mondo Grosso—which was more of a full band in the acid-house/dance club/post-punk new wave vein (vast, I know). Shinichi played the frontman and bass for Mondo Grosso. The Group disbanded in 1995, but Shinichi carried on the namesake into his solo career. Constantly producing and steadily making his way deeper into the electronic music scene, in 2007, I have to say, he’s plunged fully into the deep end of balls-to-the-wall electro (A fuller résumé is available in his official bio). Some of his hardest and finest has been for Austria’s Bunny Lake, Brighton house heads Mighty Dub Katz and London’s laid-back Plaid:

He’s also put it down on recent b-side remixes for Digitalism, Boys Noize, and contributed an interesting Earth Wind & Fire / Fatboy Slim mash-up-remix to the score of Alfredo Iñárritu flick, Babel. Or, going back a few more years, a wicked Japan-only bonus track from Basement Jaxx 2001 album, ‘Rooty’:

Now, let me tell you the really good news: Shinichi Osawa has released his newest album, ‘The One’ in his native Japan yesterday on Avex and it will be released in the US on October 2nd. Guest appearances include Au Revoir Simone, Princess Superstar and Freeform Five, among others. ‘The One’ is one-half headbanger to one-part acid-house-electronica.

DiscoattacK, our favorite music blog across the Pacific, has five tracks from ‘The One’ up for streaming. Definitely worth a listen is the track, ‘Star Guitar’, a Chemical Brothers cover with Brooklyn hotties Au Revior Simone on vocals. It’s hard to match on a classic, but Shinichi and the girls have come pretty damned close.

And lastly, for good measure, here’s Shinichi Osawa as Mondo Grosso from a few years back on Mondo Grosso’s 2003 album, ‘Next Wave’:

    bumps-
in the days when mondo grosso was still a band (sorry I missed that they disbanded in 1995) they were purely acid jazz yo!! definitely not post-punk, nor acid house, nor new wave.... acid jazz... the jazz-derived, slightly bland, loungy stuff, maybe with hip hop-like breaks, but "that" acid jazz.
  • @ ben:

Point taken! That's just bad editing on my part. I ought to know better. Thanks. I'll make a little amendment.

Mondo Grosso may have become post-punk and new wave in recent years, but through most of the 90's they were club-oriented, albiet a bit "luke-warm" acid jazz. In the days when acid jazz was a big deal, they did pretty nicely... Osawa made a name for himself in the late 90s as a producer and remixer in pop music, his sensibilities swaying from house to brazilian then into breaks and more recently, electro mixes. Fine points perhaps, but FYI as Mondo Grosso being labelled as a "post-punk" isn't quite right.:)
    Anyway, nice work as always.
  • You guys are amazing!
  • yes~ cool~
