Chicago’s Dani Deahl is good—Real good. It’s a safe bet to call her a staple of the current Chicago house scene, with a penchant for the electro variety. She is DJ, producer, journalist for Urb (sometimes BPM), and now record-exec. at freshly launched Strictly Rhythm sub-label, Calamity Jane Recordings.

…But resumes are so impersonal, if you don’t know Dani Deahl, get to know her at the ‘Brodown’, her live studio mix. G’z up, brodown.

Dig Dug Returns

My good friends from WTTM (Word To The Mother) are throwing this awesome record swap/listening party, the ONLY one of its kind in San Jose! This is not to be missed!

DJs:
+ David Ma (Wax Poetics, WTTM)
Mr. Ma is a well-respected and widely published hip-hop writer who specializes in interviews with classic and emerging artists in the field. As a selector his tastes run toward 60’s soul, Bowie, and the occasional party jam.

Peep David”s article on bay area musician Chief Xcel right here.

+ Justin Torres (Re-Joint Records, All Bay Productions)
Mr. Torres has held it down as a vendor for many of the past Dig Dug events, and we are very excited to hear some selections from his legendary collection. Though a specialist in soul and funk from the Bay Area, we’re not quite sure what to expect when he takes the decks.

Peep Justin’s ‘Break Up Letters’ mix full of heartbreaking, unreleased soul ballads here.

+ DJ Platurn (Oakland Faders, Music Machine)
Platurn is one of the finest DJs in the Bay area and beyond. He is a prolific and award-winning battle DJ, mixtape DJ, and, more recently, club rocker. He has promised to bring out the funk records that he loves but can’t play anywhere else.

Enjoy these super tight Platurn collaborations!

Romeo Erotic remixes 80’s jams: O’Bryan’s ‘I’m Freaky’, Gary Low’s ‘You Are Danger’ & The Bar-Kay’s ‘Do It’ / ‘I’m Freaky’ Treasure Fingers Reflip

romeoerotic Romeo Erotic remixes 80s jams: OBryans Im Freaky, Gary Lows You Are Danger & The Bar-Kays Do It / Im Freaky Treasure Fingers Reflip

Fresh out of the gates, L.A.’s Romeo Erotic have hit a soft spot with their remix of O’Bryan’s 1983 electro-R&B (some say “Funk”) jam ‘I’m Freaky’. I caught this remix of an old favorite in the shuffle of Posso the DJ’s recent mix and was intrigued. If you don’t recall, it goes a little something like this:

MP3: O’Bryan - I’m Freaky (Romeo Erotic Remix)

We weren’t the only ones who were intrigued—Romeo Erotic’s ‘I’m Freaky’ got itself a nice rub-down by ATL’s bestest, Treasure Fingers too.

MP3: O’Bryan - I’m Freaky (Romeo Erotic Remix / Treasure Fingers Reflip)

Romeo Erotic keeps the recipe by plucking orignals other generations and making lounge-style remixes. Here’s more work made from yr mom’s favorite, The Bar-Kays 1982 Funky Disco-R&B single, ‘Do It (Let Me See You Shake)’ and Gary Low’s 1982 Italo-Disco single, ‘You Are A Danger’:

Jumping off the shoulders of the last post, we’ve got more brand new heat from Rochester’s Kill The Noise in the form of a remix of London-town R&B diva Estelle’s ‘American Boy’ with raps from Chicago’s finest Kanye West.

Chances are you’ve heard the original, seen the video on MTV or YouTube. Well, kill that noise and give this a spin:

This track has been mixed down a dozen times over. Compare that with these and make the call what you wanna throw down. Remixes from L.A. up-and-comers LAZRtag, the collaborative forces of Bmore hero Dave Nada and VA club kid Matt Nordstrom as Nadastorm, and Sydney’s Tenzin, who’s ‘American Boy’ remix made it to the #1 spot on Hype Machine via Hot Biscuits.

Gescom: A1-D1

gescom2 Gescom: A1-D1

Having released music from the likes of Boards of Canada, Autechre, Bola, Mr. 76ix, & Jega, Skam Records is at the very forefront of the leftfield/experimental electronic music scene.

In the past, no one was really sure who was involved with the Gescom music project- some expected it was perhaps a mixture of ‘IDM’ staples Autechre, Aphex Twin, and others. To this day, I’m not sure if anyone really knows who is in the current Gescom lineup, though it seems that, along with Russell Haswell, Gescom is indeed Autechre related.

The only certainty I have of Gescom is that, whoever is involved, ‘they’ make very interesting electronic music. Gescom usually dabble with electro, acid, and hip-hop beats and then destroy shit via rhythmic skips & glitches. Their sound is like a malfunctioning music software program gone wrong. I love it.

‘A1-D1′ is a collection of six tracks taken from 2 vinyl EP’s Gescom released prior to the CD. Here are two of them.

Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984: Basura’s Pick of the Week

mute audio docs Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984: Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is ‘Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984′.

Compiled of Mute Records’ singles from the first 6 years of their existence, (which ends up being 128 tracks, including output from bigger bands like Depeche Mode & Yazoo), ‘Mute Audio Documents’ is, simply put, absolute essential listening for the music aficionado/lover.

With a diverse and eclectic roster that includes acts like indie dance punks Art Brut, industrial electronic visionaries Cabaret Voltaire, avant-garde vocalist Diamanda Galas, electro/synthpop darlings The Knife, techno god Plastikman, and many many more, there’s no doubt that Mute Records has influenced countless bands, musicians, and music sub-genres since their inception as a label 30 years ago.

Below is a list of standout tracks from ‘Mute Audio Documents’. With musical styles ranging from proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and no-wave, there should be a little something for every single one of you ‘Toofers’ to enjoy!

I urge you to listen carefully and take notes- you can learn alot from these pioneers…

Shwayze: ‘Buzzin’ (feat. Cisco Adler) (Villains Remix v.2)’

shwayze Shwayze: Buzzin (feat. Cisco Adler) (Villains Remix v.2)

Malibu’s resident indie-rap hero, Shwayze built a rep writing earnest raps and putting it down at live shows. His hustle got him noticed by former Geffen president and current Interscope imprint, Suretone president, Jordan Schur. The standout cut, ‘Buzzin” enlists help from friend, celeb., Whitestarr rocker and son of Lou Alder, Cisco Alder. Cisco delivers the winning hook on ‘Buzzin”.

Enter Villains, you know the name, you know how they get down (or, at least, you should). So, out went the acoustic rock baseline found in the original and in drops the quantized-drum electro craziness. The production is supreme, as per usual.

MP3: Shwayze - Buzzin’ (feat. Cisco Adler) (Villains Remix v.2)

Additional ‘Buzzin” remixes by L.A. partyboy, DJ Skeet Skeet, young americans, Classixx & Brooklyn banger, AC Slater headed your way. Keep your ears spread.

Shwayze will be a part of the Vans’ Warped Tour this summer, amoung other dates. Get knowin’ at Shwayze’s MySpace tour calendar.

Peep the original ‘Buzzin” video at mtvU.

Edit (05-31-08): Remastered v.2 remix replaces the original! More banger-er!
