Public Image Ltd.- Second Edition/Metal Box: Basura’s Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is Public Image Ltd.’s album ‘Second Edition’.

Public Image Ltd. (PiL for short) was formed by Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon after they disbanded. ‘Second Edition’ was PiL’s second album (originally released as ‘Metal Box’ in a metal film canister on 3 12″s).

This is the soundtrack for those gloomy days, as Lydon’s detached, anxious vocals and somber lyrics, combined with the stark, austere sound of the rest of the band make for quite a listening experience.

Having influenced bands like LCD Soundsystem & The Rapture, there’s no doubt that PiL played a big part in the ‘Post-Punk’ movement alongside bands like Joy Division, Gang of Four, & Magazine. This is Death Disco!!!

The A/V co. I used to work for produced the slides for the Clash shows at Bonds in NYC. I ran into Johnny one day and told him so, he misunderstood and thought I wanted Pil to produce the backgrounds (Pil is a co.). During the run of Clash shows I would gain access through a side door guarded by Haoui Montaug. While standing there one night, Keith Levene tried to get in and was denied. I thought this strange, since Keith used to be in The Clash. I offered to have him come in with me. Because of this association, we later produced a Pil logo slide for their show at Roseland. Before the show, I witnessed Johnny sitting at a table in the middle of the floor, going over the receipts. The show, with Keith Levene, was amazing, especially a number called “Mad Max.”

Any chance you have the “Death Disco” 12″?
    Thanks much.
