D-Styles: Phantazmagorea- Basura’s Pick of the Week

phant D-Styles: Phantazmagorea- Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. With so much music being put out everyday, especially independently, it’s quite easy to forget about the great releases that have withstood the test of time…

This weeks pick is D-Styles‘ album ‘Phantazmagorea’.

What makes ‘Phantazmagorea’ stand high above the rest of ’scratch’ based albums is that it was composed ENTIRELY from samples/scratches off of turntables, the very first of it’s kind. No computers, no samplers- just two turntables and a mixer and some basic effects.

D-Styles, like this album, is pure genius. Prepare for some jaw-dropping, face-melting good times as he astounds you with his technical skill & musicianship, scratching and sampling from the likes of cult-shock-punk rocker G.G. Allin, iconic American criminal Charles Manson, Bruce Lee, and many more.

Are you ready?

I agree, ‘Wave Twisters’ is up there, but still doesn’t come close to Phantazmagorea’s overall creativity and musicianship!

Nah, no we didn’t! We’re just trying to have a balance of new and old stuff on here, it can’t be all new stuff all the time! There’s just too much great music out there to focus on the latest remixes and the like, ya know?

Yup yup! D is the man. Probably my favorite scratch-album out there. To me it tops Wave Twisters by far. The musicianship that went into this album is just mindblowing. The Knitting Factory DVD where he performs most the album songs LIVE with the Beat Junkies is another must-have.

    Kudos on the post.

My favorite track was diabolical simply because of the scratch at 2:24. That shit is hot!
