Arabian Prince- ‘Innovative Life’ Out Now on Stones Throw Records

ap Arabian Prince Innovative Life Out Now on Stones Throw Records

When I first heard that the good people at Stones Throw Records decided to release a collection of West Coast pioneer Arabian Prince’s music from the 1980’s, I was ecstatic.

Having worked with the likes of the Egyptian Lover, N.W.A., & The World Class Wreckin’ Crew (In which Dr. Dre was involved), it’s no surprise that the Stones Throw crew wanted to shed some light on an important figure in the electro-rap game. This is groundbreaking and inspiring music- and if you’re not familiar with the Arabian Prince or ‘electro-rap/funk/bass’ for that matter, get with it!

Here’s the title track taken from ‘Innovative Life’.

This was the sort of stuff I grew up on. This was the music me and my childhood friends used to breakdance and battle to. This sort of music has been highly influential to me, and still, when I hear tracks like Arabian Prince’s ‘Innovator’ and ‘Freak City’, I seriously have an urge to dust off my old Adidas shelltops and ROCK SHIT! This is a solid collection of work from an equally solid and ‘Innovative’ musician.

Here are a few more gems in the electro-rap/funk/bass vein for that ass.

Gucci Crew’s classic track, ‘Sally That Girl’ isn’t exactly electro-funk- more Miami Bass rather, but it definitely has its place in this feature…

DBS’ track ‘Arabian Dreams’ isn’t from the 80’s, but is highly influenced from the West Coast electro-funk/Miami Bass sound…

  • @ b:

I smell you, player. I can't deny that the new jacks with the Ableton cracks lack some sophistication, but we all start there. Posts like these are aimed to increase the general knowledge of DJs about the true classics. To you and I, it's homage to an old favroite, to the kids, it's an invitation to learn and enjoy the history of the music they're now part of.

They may be competition, but competition is a constant; It's a good thing; Competition forces us OGs to stay sharp. It forces the would-be's to spend many sleepless nights playing catch-up, mastering the pirated software (and probably becoming paying customers later as they make money and get more involved). Competition is what advances industries and makes us innovate. While we're all pining for the number 1 slot, we're also sharing an experience, we're all in the same musical movement.

man, this is not for suckers, I had this record in 85. Now all these lame-ass blog Dj's are gonna be rockin "Surgery" (since they get half of their tunes here) and are gonna play it the fuck out. On one hand I like seeing you post true gems, on the other I feel like you are throwing pearls to swine since everybody and their mother has a crack of Ableton or Traktor, or Serato and is instantly a big party DJ, now I can't even get booked to play cuz all the clubs want these fuckin baby-faced 19 year old "DJ's" playing my tunes.
