After Midnight remixes Club District Allstars, Rockwell & M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade.

aftermidnight After Midnight remixes Club District Allstars, Rockwell & M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade.

We’re fans and friends of L.A.’s After Midnight. They are house-rooted DJ Farron and former-Villain, Philthy B. We’ve had the pleasure of introducing them last year and are down for what they’re cookin’ up now.

What they’re cookin’ is an official remix for South Side Chicago’s Club District Allstars‘ ‘Change’, released on Textrue Recordings. Club District Allstars is the collaborative forces of major house hero CZR, protégé Vince Melo & Malik (a.k.a. one-half of The Outhere Brothers. Wow. Boom Boom anyone?). This will house you!

Also on deck, we’ve got some tasty bootlegs. First up, Rockwell’s 1984 spooky-yet-poppy r&b jam ‘Somebody’s Watching Me’, featuring an at-prime Michael Jackson. Forever epic! Peep the original video on YouTube. The After Midnight boys give it that Jenny Jones makeover that take it from ’80s electro-pop to to modern electro to dubstep and back again. This shit is ‘ard.

Bootleg #2, is not second in quality or importance—it is an equally tasty remix of M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade’s sensual, mnml, house track, ‘Body Language’. Here After Midnight shows their diversity with a little excursion in dub.

See After Midnight doin’ their thing at the Fresh Squeezed rave at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles last August on YouTube. Live vicariously lurkin’ After Midnight’s photostream of pics on Zannel.

BTW, Club District Allstars’ CZR plays tonight in L.A. at House in Hollywood, alongside Palms Out crew’s B.Rich. Boardners. 18+ Word!

Music Go Music: ‘Warm In The Shadows’

Music Go Music

Music Go Music is a hard to categorized musical group hailing from Los Angeles. The music they create varies from creamy disco to doo-wop-rock sprinkled with a dash on pop on top. All of their tracks sound as if it was produced sometime in the late ’70s but had it been, it would have turned the whole scene of that time on it’s ear. Here’s hoping they do the same for our scene, or at the very least give it a much needed swift kick to the ribs.

‘Warm In The Shadows’ is a dark disco track which will have you swearing up and down that they somehow channeled the spirit of ABBA in the studio. This shit could turn even the hugest G into a dancing queen.

CROSSOVER – Dark Blue from SPACE DEATH album due out Mid March

CROSSOVER SPACE DEATH CROSSOVER Dark Blue from SPACE DEATH album due out Mid March

Vee and Dez a.k.a. Ratboy & Ratgirl of the mystical entities that are CROSSOVER are poised to emerge from the creeping cosmos of oblivion with a new album for all us mere mortals. The new album is titled ‘SPACE DEATH‘ and is due out mid March via Punch Records. The duo opts for a sound that’s a bit more danced from the stripped down sound of previous albums but they are sure to remain heavy on the gloom.

SPACE DEATH boasts 10 tracks that vary from hard hitting bangers, to punked up jaunts that are sure to give you a sonic black eye and make you devoted member to the church of CROSSOVER.

My favorite from the album so far is the ‘Dark Blue’ where Vee stoically warns us that we she’s “coming for our kids”. Partake in the dastardly gem.

Stream: CROSSOVER – Dark Blue

Again, SPACE DEATH is due out mid March, pre-order the album here. You can obtain a digital copy of CROSSOVER’s ‘Live in Berlin’ EP from Black Montanas or iTunes. As always Amazon has ‘Fantasmo’ and ‘Cryptic & Dire Sallow Faced Hoods’ for a good price.

Our Lady Fatima a.k.a. Messinian a.k.a We Don’t Sleep

ourladyfatima Our Lady Fatima a.k.a. Messinian a.k.a We Dont Sleep

Feelin’ Messinian! While archaeologists (and Google users) may know Messinian to be the last age of the Miocene epoch, everyday junglists know rapper J Messinian as MC from the mighty mighty Planet of the Drums crew alongside Dieselboy, AK 1200 and Dara. House heads know him for his Beatport-friendly tunes with Hatiras & DJ Dan. And more still, blog-house electro heads will surely recognize his tune ‘Throw It Away’ as remixed by Designer Drugs. I’d like to introduce you to another side of the known “rave rapper”. Meet Our Lady Fatima (a reference a religious story some may recognize), the newest facet of Messinian that takes a decidedly post-punk approach, reminiscent of the music of his childhood and adolescence (born in ‘79, y’all). And here’s the cool part—more than just sentimental explorations—he’s making things that sound contemporary and just plain good—enough so to have 10 cuts in heavy rotation at my house. Here’s a few:

Damn, remember how we was kinda post-punk blog at one point? Remember ‘New Wave Tuesdays’? Thanks Messinian for helping us get back to our roots! Lo-fi moody dark music 4 evar! The Our Lady Fatima project is all Messinian singing and producing, with one Jason Craveiro joining to produce and play keys at future shows.

Of course, Messinian is known for being a damn fine rapper and ain’t nathin’ changed. For his upcoming ‘Vampire Hustle’ album and projects on his fledgling label, Flash Art Records, distributed through INgrooves/Universal, he’s enlisted some of his buddies like The Enemy (a.k.a. Treasure Fingers), Toxic Avenger, Jayvon, Cardiff Giants, Life After 1984, our MTSC residential DJs True Pseudo and even the late-great Disco D—big fat pimp, dick stay hard, never get limp! Messinian was recoding an album with D at the time of his death, this is one of the tunes that was made:

Have some quality time with Messinian over at Rockthedub.com which has a nice lengthy interview with our boy.

Tonight: Portland, you can catch Messinian playing with Klever. Tomorrow: the world! Check Messinian’s MySpace tour page for info.

The Long Blondes – Nostalgia (Glass Candy remix) + Glass Candy – Animal Imagination (Instrumental)

the long blondes The Long Blondes Nostalgia (Glass Candy remix) + Glass Candy Animal Imagination (Instrumental)

U.K. Quintet The Long Blondes recently called it quits in late 2008 mainly due to lead guitarist Dorian Cox having a stroke. Since their inception in 2003 the band released two full length albums and one collection of their singles released on Rough Trade appropriately named “Singles”. Their last album Couples was produced by production genius Erol Alkan.

Portland’s ever genre-changing sensations Glass Candy have remixed one of the stand out tracks on The Long Blondes final album. Nostalgia is a proper title for a song to listen to whilst we reflect on The Long Blondes awesome existence.

You’ll recognize where bits and pieces of this remix came from if you’ve heard the early instrumental version of Glass Candy’s Animal Imagination which sounds nothing like the version of the song that is currently sporting the same title on their MySpace. Name change, perhaps. If you haven’t heard it, please do:

[snip]2009-02/disaster/Glass Candy- Animal Imagination (Instrumental).mp3[/snip]

Word on the street is that The Long Blondes former lead vocalist Kate Jackson has a solo album in the works. Scottish band 1990s also said Kate will guest spot on one the songs off their forth coming album ‘Kicks’, which is due out in March.

All of The Long Blondes albums are available for purchase on iTunes go them up if you haven’t and reminisce with us.

Eli Smith: ‘Party All Knight’ + Lies In Disguise ‘Meet Your Replacement’

elismith Eli Smith: Party All Knight + Lies In Disguise Meet Your Replacement
Designer: KIDPLASTIK

Los Angeles (and-sometimes-Tokyo) resident Eli Smith, VP from the So Sweet Records crew, just put down this first original release that is hella party tune. The title is an apt pun: ‘Party All Knight’. When I hear it I do kinda feel like partying (and maybe a little jousting). …Now, I’ve heard Eli Smith DJs live shows in chainmail armor under ever-waving banners of So Sweet heraldry—O.K. I kid, I kid! To borrow from the the words of the label, “Party All Knight was written as a tribute to people who never want the party to end, those don’t know when to stop partying, and those who do know when to stop, but carry on partying anyway….. including Michael Phelps”. Zing!

That track right there is mastered by Computer Club which is a guarantee it will bang the hell out in your DJ sets on the big monitors.

And if yew never knew, Eli Smith was, once upon a time, the drummer for a little Los Angeles based indie band called Moving Units. Oh, you’ve heard of them? They’re one of my very favorites too! You’re probably aware that the lead singer of Moving Units, Blake Miller is on the So Sweet label as one half of Lies In Disguise with Le Castle Vania. This tune is worth your time as well: ‘Meet Your Replacement’ is Lies in Disguise’s latest offering:

Villains remix N.A.S.A.’s ‘Whatchudoin” featuring MIA, Santogold, Spank Rock & Nick Zinner

nasa Villains remix N.A.S.A.s Whatchudoin featuring MIA, Santogold, Spank Rock & Nick Zinner

Hot dang. Our most favoritest production duo on the come-up, Villains have made a massive tune in the form of this official remix for N.A.S.A.. N.A.S.A., which stands for North America South America, is the production duo of L.A.’s Squeak E. Clean and Sau Paulo’s DJ Zegon. The tune is ‘Whatchudoin” featuring the motherly MIA on the hook with Spank Rock on the verse. The track also features guitar-god Nick Zinner (most notably of Yeah Yeah Yeahs) and Santogold (who take a lesser or absent roles in this here remix):

‘Whatchudoin” comes from N.A.S.A.’s debut release, ‘Spirit of Apollo’, which saw release yesterday. Amazon’s has hard copies for you to get your mitts on for just $7.99. That’s half what it costs to download, homeboy! For your money you get a supremely banging album featuring (take a deep breath): Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5), Gift Of Gab (of Blackalicious), Method Man, RZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard (R.I.P.) & Ghostface Killah (of Wu-Tang Clan), E-40, DJ Swamp, Barbie Hatch, John Frusciante, KRS-One, Fatlip & Slim Kid Tre (formerly of The Pharcyde), Karen O (of Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Kanye West, Lykke Li, George Clinton, The Cool Kids, Scarface, DJ AM, Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, DJ Qbert, Kool Kojak & DJ Babão, and (we’re not done yet) even such interesting & unlikely combinations a such as Sizzla with Amanda Blank & Love Foxxx (of CSS), and (brilliantly) Tom Waits with Kool Keith and David Byrne joining Chuck D (of Public Enemy), Ras Congo, Seu Jorge & Z-Trip. Epic much?!

In other news, be on the lookout for Villains ‘Birth EP’. True all the tracks on it have had their debut here in the past. But you should love to cop that hardcopy.

Oh, and did you hear about our new Monday night weekly at Cinespace in Hollywood. We’ve got these fantastic DJs called Villains playing alongside True Pseudo, Posso the DJ, myself and the Missingtoof crew, Josh David, 12th Planet, Handroids, Heavy Accents. We’ve also got Dirk Mai of BOXeight and Ceasar Sebastian taking pictures for your memories or for you to live vicariously! It’s called ‘Missingtoof Presents Sophisticated Clubbing’ and you can stay up on all the happnings by adding the party’s MySpace or Facebook pages.

Fever Ray – If I Had A Heart (Fuck Buttons remix) + Familjen remix

fever ray Fever Ray If I Had A Heart (Fuck Buttons remix) + Familjen remix

The sister half of Sweden’s brother/sister duo The Knife Karin Dreijer ventures out on her own in a haunting new project called Fever Ray. Fever Ray has found a home on Mute Records whom will be releasing the self titled full length March Twenty-Fourth. If we learned anything from The Knife its that Karin likes her music like I like my women; dark and brooding and disorienting as all get out. The album is a dish best served with a bottle of cheap wine and repressed memories.

Ogle this video from one of the many stand out tracks on the album, ‘If I Had A Heart’.

UK’s extremely experimental duo Fuck Buttons remixed ‘If I Had a Heart’ into an even more distorted spacey jaunt that should have you dancing and crying all at the same time.

Trackademicks is known for his blend of hip hop and electro anthems usually topped of with a positive message and has been a Missingtoof favorite from jump. We meant to post the [RE] Mixtape Vol 2 (mixed by DJ Tap.10) when it came out last year, but as you all know, we fall off sometimes. Anyways, its still available for download via zShare. Cop it.

Broken Spindles: ‘Introvert’ new from ‘Kiss/Kick’ on Blank.wav records

brokenspindles Broken Spindles: Introvert new from Kiss/Kick on Blank.wav records

Omaha, Nebraska ambient-rock outfit, Broken Spindles, is the the brainchild of Joel Petersen, the celebrated bass player of dance-rock band The Faint and former member of punk band Beep Beep. All of which had a happy home on Omaha’s Saddle Creek Records, until the recent creation of The Faint’s own label Blank.wav, which saw its first album release last year with The Faint’s own eighth full-length, ‘Fasciination’, and will be releasing Broken Spindles fifth record ‘Kiss/Kick’ on February 17th as its second release. This first track from the upcoming record to hit the ‘net is in heavy rotation at my house! Where the most recent Broken Spindles record, 2008’s self-released ‘Document Number One’ was a journey through sparse ethereal instrumental music, this new single is a return to a bit poppier music with vocals—reminding me most closely to the work of Death Cab’s Benjamin Gibbord and electronic producer Dntel with The Postal Service, due to the breathy emotive songwriting-driven lyrics over blippy-rock beats (or just slap the label “No Wave” on it). For Broken Spindles, all work is created and sung by Joel Petersen, and from the press blurb, “lyrically, the album explores human fragility, both in body and mind”.

MP3: Broken Spindles – Introvert (2009)
[5mb | 320 cbr | 1:58 | 87 bpm]

Broken Spindles began in 2001 as a project to score a small film, but by 2002 was developed into Joel’s pet-project that continues to live. Broken Spindles biggest commercial success is nothing you’re likely to recognize, a extremely desolate piano piece on the higher register, titled ‘Song No Song’, from the 2004 LP, ‘Fulfilled/Complete’, which was used in a Lexus commercial. It won’t ring a bell so I’ll put this favorite off the same album in its place:
