technically, difficult.

ATTN (real talk, son):

My server mp3 server booted me for TOS violation, that’s what’s causing the recent problem with ‘forbidden’ errors. It’s all you thirsty downloaders!

I’m on the hunt for a new dedicated server with a dedicated connection. Y’all know any servers or CDNs on the cheap? I think we’ve outgrown all these virtual-dedicated servers. Only snag is that all the ads on this site have almost disppeared, i’m already coming out of pocket half the time to keep it runnin’. Dedicated ain’t cheap… or is it, holler if you know of one. I’m grindin’ to get this show back on the road.

  • ian
I used to host mp3s with host monster and they never noticed until i started talking to their support about something and they went looking around. :/

I look like redthreat uses them (www.rednicko.com) and then seem to have a lot of music up.

Some of the free file sharing services allow direct links also. www.fileden.com and drop box www.getdropbox.com

I wrote a obfuscation download script in php so my files would be stored as something like. 2008-23-04-23423423.data and then on download be renamed via the ID3 tag to Arists_Song.mp3 but that isn't so nice to scrapers like hypem
  • ian
Also noticed. www.drop.io is pretty nice and does direct links. Although they are a bit long...

    http://drop.io/download/public/vcvhvo64juwpcbrh...
  • ryan
as much as i hate to bring it up.. bit torrent does work well for these kinds of things.
  • Evan
I'm not sure about fileden, if ever I need the occasional song from playlist.com, it often redirects me to fileden to download the song, and I often get a message saying Bandwidth limit exceeded, so I suppose they have a fair usage policy too.
  • the traffic uses up a serveral hundred dollars worth of bandwidth resources a month. No place will give that away for free to direct link, only host that add a ton of ads or timers and captchas and shit.

at least that's how i see it.
  • Ben
I recommend a dedicated server from calpop (http://calpop.com), one of the cheapest with unmetered bandwidth.
  • problem is I do 30mbps average last 2 months, and two to three times that when i'm on my A game. Those Calpop plans on the front page are at 10mpbs. the 100mbps plan starts at 1k a month. that's probably what's needed to handle the traffic without any problems, but it ain't happening right now. :<
  • Ben
You should be able to negotiate $5/mpbs at a 100mpbs commit per month from a reasonable reseller. Less than that and whoever is selling it too you is probably making money off you in some other way. That's $500 a month though, if the ads don't justify that you probably need to throttle to a lower rate anyway, people will get their files eventually.
  • Ben
Here is one at about that rate that you don't have to negotiate - EGi is reasonable, certainly more reliable than the providers that focus on shared hosting. I've used them for colo.

    http://egihosting.com/dedicatedservers_core2_du...
  • Looking to get it under 500, but that's looking unlikely, for the specs i'm trying for.

This site used to make around that much a month, but now it's dwindled down to almost nothing (since the 'recession' word started being thrown around).

So server money is cutting into my food and beer budget. Trying to get as dirt cheap as possible while not completely sucking. If i could get a 50mpbs deal I'd take that for a while, and just make sure I don't post too much.

Anyway, thanks for the EGI link. I've been eyeing them already. Everybody has good things to say about them. Still it's $600 a month on the cheapest. I'd like to swing it, but I dunno if I can.

I'd like to do Colo. It's a better deal in the end if you have the up front cash, yea?
  • mr pi
I rate rghost.net.. direct links, 2gb limit, plus their front page is nice, and it displays bitrate if you click the html links for files.
  • "You should not generate more 30 requests/minute to our servers."

    = option killer.
  • zed
Not sure if this will help but maybe worth a shot...

  • zed
    http://www.jumpline.com/compare_dedicated

That might be a more relevant link.
  • Eric
Maybe you should offer multiple places to download. Places like rapidshare and the like are a pain in the ass for people that don't have paying accounts, but it could help supplement the load to the dedicated server or provide another option for when the limit is reached each month.

Maybe it would be best to just have the flash music player files on the server and have the downloads on one of those third party sites.

I dunno. Just throwing out ideas. Just don't wanna see this site fail.
  • i need to find (or write) a script that transcodes the streams down to 128, since virtually all the stuff I put up is 320 or v0.

I could do it by hand, but doing these elaborate posts with lots of attention to details gets tiresome.

Thanks for throwing out ideas. I'm all about making things harder, better, faster, blogger. cheaper too!
  • Eric
It wouldn't be that hard to have divs that are only available to members of the site. Then you could have the flash player in 128, with another div with the full download that are hidden from your basic visitor.
  • John
I'm a fan of mediafire.com. It might be a good place to start posting new songs because there isn't a download limit (unlike Rapidshare).
  • mediafire is def. the best of the download services. If i was going to do it, I'd go that route. Also perhaps sharebee.com has a good model.

Still I really despise having to do those click-thourghs to download. As an avid blog reader myself, I really won't return to a blog that uses those, why? When there's blogs offering the same tracks with user-friendly direct download. There's lots of people with good taste and bandwidth to spare doing more user-friendly blogs.
  • Monty
I dont know of any...but i like...love music you could put up a lil donation link like ISOHUNT.com has im pretty sure some people will donate unless you have it already i just havent seen it.
  • I haven't done that yet. I've always thought it tacky, but sheeeit, I'd rather be tacky than DEAD!

Also thinking, maybe it would be a good idea, to perhaps make some sticker packs and try to sell those. I dunno how many would cough up a $5 for an envelope full of stickers, but it's worth a shot.
  • Monty
Stickers sound pretty damn cool i would do that
  • Monty
    YOu could make shirts
  • Duncan MacLeod
Ask 4chan creator Moot for help. He seems on top of this internet.
  • /b/tard for 4 evar. But I don't know Moot, I wouldn't know who to ask or what to ask.

    BOSS OF THE INTERNET.
  • VirtualOrgasm
I would go with mediaFire.com plus ill even give u my account aha a i dont even use it
  • Word. Thanks for the offer! I do think mediaFire is the best of those services, but even still, I think those services suck.

For back-up purposes, I think I may just begin adding mediaFire or perhaps Sharebee links to each download, but hosting my own files is important to me, I really hate blogs that don't host files. I don't read blogs that only use DDL links, so I don't want to be one.

What's a mediafire account get you anyway?
  • VirtualOrgasm
    not much really
    100mb file size upload limit

thats pretty much it but the good thing is ppl can download as much as they want and download multiple files at a time
  • so, if the uploader has a paid account, downloaders see a benefit also? That's good to know!

P.S. looks like a need to tinker with the CSS of these threaded comments. You notice that alternating messages three levels deep go white. Oops! Ha.
  • VirtualOrgasm
well if u get a paid account which is $6.00 or something u get all sort of other stuff
  • chrisJames
i would GLADLY pay a donation for this site. i think if everyone paid 3-5$ a month, you could afford the 1000$ a month bandwith as i'm sure you have more than enough readers on this site to cover that.

after sunday remixes got axed by google, your blog is one of last bastions of awesome music in the blog world. please don't let it die
  • It sucks what they did with PalmsOut. We're not on blogger, we have our own site, so we didn't get cracked down like they did. We might in the future, but who knows?

And I've always thought taking donations was tacky, but I'd rather be tacky than DEAD so maybe you're onto something. ...I want to do some sticker packs or something where you feel like you're getting a little something for your money (alas, many people won't pay any amount for anything unless it's tangible property). Bummer it's come to this, but our traffic (expenses) are going up and ads since about last July have nearly disappeared.

Workin' it out. Hope to be out of the box and swingin' again within a week.
  • Prea
psychz.net might be good, I use them for a forum
  • the only service that would work is cluster, and they cant beat the prices of some other cluster/cloud servers.

    thanks tho!
  • Darius D
    Dear Kittens,

This site is awesome and I went into depression and withdrawl when it went down. My brother works with servers for a large company and I'll do my best to get info from him.

In the meantime I would be VERY willing to pay $10 month to keep this site running and I know another 3-4 people that I could lean on heavily to donate as well because of all the AWESOME music and news we enjoy. Be strong, for all of us.
  • That's mighty nice of you. I've always thought donations are tacky, but I'd rather be tacky than DEAD. ha.

The problem is that server bills never stop, so it's a constant burden. Traffic stays going up while ad revenue has been pretty much non-existant since the 'recession' took hold around July.

I got a nice 50% discount from a good buddy at MediaTemple for the front-end (that displays all the html, words, and pictures, I'd be lucky to get any sort of deal on the real workhorse server that does all the music files (which is what is currently not working).

I'm not goin' anywhere, this site is a lot of fun and I love it and I know other people love it too. We just need to get comfy in a home I can trust and afford again! Thanks for the words of encouragement. I may just throw a PayPal donation link up soon if another option doesn't present itself real soon!
  • Dustin

or do you make cPanel software? If so, you're ballin'!

    i'm a little confused. ha.
  • VirtualOrgasm
those sites were good thanks for posting them
  • eric
Hey, i work for a data center and can give you basically my personal Mbps rates (as if i were to host my own server). Let me know if you havent found a solution yet. I can def beat the prices you're looking at.
  • Average since February is was 30MBPS which is ~10TB a month, which can easily double or triple on a good month when back to our A-game (or call it a bad month, it depends on how you look at it $$$).

I'm looking for a dedicated server (not virtual-dedicated) and a 100MBPS unshared port. Need at least 10TB of transfer but shopping around for unmetered if the price is right.

    Or considering a Amazon e3/s2 buy-what-you-use solution.

What do you have in mind? I'd appreciate a hook-up!
  • t
any news on this man? i do so need the february and march releases. hadn't checked back since october...
  • they'll be back up soon enough, i'm just counting my nickles and dimes and bargain hunting to make this juggernaut keep on movin'.
  • get with my host, http://www.hostrocket.com/dedicated.html

The support is incredible dude and good equipment!

    -Joey
  • "1000 GB Tier 1 bandwidth" ... option killer. I do 10-25 times that. Lots of servers aren't targeted for media streams, like that one.

    Thanks tho.
  • Meeshtron
Have you tried seeing what server Noiseporn.com uses?
  • looks like they're on Bluehost.com, which indicates they don't have much traffic, cause bluehost only has shared servers with croweded ports. I really need a dedicated server and 100mbps port.

    Thanks tho!
  • I know that several have mentioned charging for access to the site, and I would also have to agree with them. I think it could be done in a way that doesn't shut off everyone, but rather give extra added value to members (subscribers) of the site.

On posts that feature artist or remixes make the primary track available to everyone, but provide additional value to members by offering the additional remixes or tracks. Additionally the longer 60 minute plus mixtapes could be exclusive to members.

That way you're offsetting your bandwidth cost, providing additional value to members, and still giving a taste of music to non-subscribers.

Additionally it would be possible to explore payment sharing options with the artists and people creating content for the site - % of membership fees based on the number of track downloads vs all other tracks.

The key would be in providing additional, 'above and beyond' content to members. If the focus is just 'restricting' content then it might be a game over for the site.

Although it's a different market take a look at what Envato is doing for creative education resources and tutorials - http://envato.com/. (for example http://psd.tutsplus.com/). By charging they can afford to offer better content than anyone else and they've seen huge growth after introducing a 'plus+' option.
  • I think you're onto something. I'd never charge for what I'm giving away free already, however, I would do some value-added options to make the site more valuable to potential subscribers. That requires more product and more infrastructure, two things I'd love to have someday, but alas, I just don't have the time or ability to swing 'em right now.

Is there a president for a paid subscription blog or forum that you know of? I can't think of any. Some torrent trackers take donation, that's all I can think of, and even that is optional.

RCRDLBL.com has a profit sharing model with the artists they blog. I'd love to see their accounting ledger. I really wonder if they're making any profit from their advertisers.

Thanks for all the insight. You've been very helpful.

What you also can do to save up bandwidth is to limit Hot-linking to your mp3's. So only the domains you allow access to the files, you grant access to.

At first you probably won't make friends, but then you can still offer the downloads here... And then; I will still be your friend ;)
  • Yea, we've done all sorts of experimentation with that and eventually implemented it to where most every linker was blocked. We still do 10TBs easy.

I'm familiar with .htaccess. If anyone has any tips on setting up rules I'm all ears. I'm always for making improvements!

    Thanks.
  • Sweded
I highly recommend researching Amazon S3 for hosting your media files. It would take a bit of coding to hook up and the service isn't free. The plus would be that your website host would be spared the brunt of bandwidth consumed w/ .mp3's. All media traffic would be distributed to S3 Here's an overview that might be a little dated but probably mostly relevant. http://www.digital-web.com/articles/scalable_ho...
    Keep up the good fight!
  • S3 is the best option, of course. But it will cost in excess of 1700 a month to support this traffic (and could easily double if I posted everyday). Right now that's just not feasible, but I'm seeing about some corporate sponsorships to make this happen, because that's the only way that solution would be realized.

For my website host, we have a nice sponsorship from MediaTemple (my favorite). All the front end that you see here is served up by them, but they don't deal in high volume traffic or CDN services.
  • AntiPleasure
I am totally having withdrawals from this site! I hope that you get things sorted soon. Missing the tunes. <3
  • M@
    Hey man,

We use cloud servers to run our sites as these can scale up and down according to the traffic levels. We have some big clients on there and we've never seen any problems with downtime and it's dirt CHEAP!!!

    http://www.mosso.com/

    Peace wigga,

    M@
  • yea. cloud servers are the ideal for us, but @ .15 a gig (the competitive rate, same as Amazon s3), my monthly bill would be 2k right now. that would be fine if the site was generating enough to cover it's own ass lately, but alas, it's not, so I'm looking for dedicated unmetered, which is a little cheaper, but not as good.
  • seriously, throw up a paypal donate box. we'll help out.
  • Alright. Here it goes:

    <form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post">

I don't know much about this issue but I've heard godaddy has cheap servers...
    http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/hosting/shared.as...
  • their best 350$ a month plan maxes out at 2TB per month. Missingtoof is doing 5 times that at minimum. We used godaddy for a while, but we've just outgrown what they can offer.

    Thanks tho, appreciate the help!

anyone else have any services like this one? better?

    thanks!
  • Yasir
not super cheap but MEDIA TEMPLE is AMAZING!
  • mediatemple is our front-end and database server. it's great for what it's great for, but they don't cater to high-bandwidth streaming media. their top tier hosting (750 per month) caps at 3TB a month. We do about 4 times that at minimum.

But yes, for front end, MediaTemple is the best evar, highly recommended.
  • How many unique visitors do you get per week/month?
  • i dunno haven't looked lately. avg. monthly bandwidth of mp3s lately is 10TBs tho.
  • Sir Excellence
As long as nothing new posted on this blog i got another very good one.

not sure if this is what you need but globat.com serves up unlimited space and unlimited bandwidth. support is okay, could be better, but it's cost effective.
  • a friend of noise porn has a private server available for use, email him at michaelrshannon@gmail.com and let him know we sent you there!
  • check out joyent.com - 10TB traffic on all plans.
  • supreme slackin on the pimpin!!!

i just gotta have my missing toofs!
  • Its prolly best to just use a free host like Mediafire - you can't be making enough to cover the costs of hosting your mp3s with the volume your talking about...

Free setup, unlimited bandwidth, 250GB HDD, hosted in France, very cheap overall. You should check them out.
  • Rob
Actually, they seem to have done away with the free setup on them, except on the 2XL.
It's still damn good value imo.
  • cfpg
If you're still looking check fdcservers.net
They have a 100mb shared burstable server for $159. You will not get the full 100mb but their FAQ says:

Q: What kind of transfer speeds and how much data transfer can I expect on the 100Mbit shared bandwidth plan ?
A: You can expect 30-50Mbit/s transfer speeds and 15TB-20TB monthly data transfer.
  • I know people bitch about them, but have you looked into dreamhost at all?

We host with them, and are currently allocated about 8TB/month in transfer, though we're currently only capping out @ 2TB/month. You would most likely have to try and work out a custom plan with them, but they've been nothing but awesome to us and everyone I've recommend to them.

However, I know people have had issues with them in the past ( I beleive headphonesex did in years past?). Still, its worth a shot.

Alternatively, you could also try getting a few hosting accounts and then just alter which account you use with which post. IE today's post is on hostA, tomorrow's hostB, and the next day's on hostC.. that will, in theory, cut the amount of overall transfer you need from each host in three and, with the way bandwidth is calculated, my end up being cheaper than 1 giant hosting account?

Have you looked into Mog.com's affiliate program (http://mog.com/mmn)? Its by far the highest paying ad service we've ever used. Its dipped a little bit recently, but its picking back up again.

I've also setup my htaccess file to redirect hot linkers to a page with an extra ad or two on it (rather than just outright block them). It can be configured per site, and I've not seen anyone else do that yet, either. May also help in upping ad rev a little bit. With some more customization you could search results and what not to it to make it a more user friendly page to justify the ads.

Hit me up on email if any of this don't make sense.

    -choyce hacks!
  • You have the same issue with another business who deals in large media file transfers. Most people in this business run dedicated servers on the cheapest possible bandwidth. You might get better advice asking these types of people.

    http://gfy.com *NSFW*

A lot of these types of people, pool together and share a rack and split the bandwidth costs as a single client. Perhaps you and a couple other large websites such as yourself could set up your own RAID on cheap bandwidth colo and split the costs.

As for MediaFire and rapidshit, I hate that stuff. One of the reasons I use your site is because of the non-BS downloads. I live in Asia and a lot of those filesharing sites don't work on "wierd" countries.
  • @ j0rd - that sucks about Asia... can you verify by trying to dL something from my site at http://NoVegans.com ???
  • I'd also be down for bittorrent. You could set up your host to seed everything as well. We need more "legal" bitorrent sites.
  • You also might help form the debate by providing us of what you'll be needing from your host.

From what I can tell your parameters are doing an estimates 10-50 TB a month, and primary concern is keeping this cost as cheap as possible.

You have mediatemple dealing with your front end, so you're essentially looking for a file server.

The last piece of the puzzle is how much space you'll need on this new host.
