OK, well, ehm… How do I put this? I feel bad for posting something from a MoS compilation simply because they have generic club chart hits which I dislike to a certain extent. Sure, it’s what everyone listens to at a party or down at the club but I wouldn’t listen to it 24/7. Although, you can never avoid them.

Even though the Aussie Annual 07 was released late last year, I only came to actually listening to some of the tracks last night and was impressed to see The Presets, Whomadewho and The Knife included in the mix (done by John Course & Mark Dynamix). I still can’t work it out of why I didn’t see the tracks on there earlier…

Yo, patch reporting here. Just remembered I didn’t formally introduce myself in my last post!

As firstly mentioned by disaster, I was meant to be covering ‘the Big Day Out‘ but little did I inform him was that I didn’t get a ticket. Anyway, all I know is that my mates were LOVING The Presets and could not stop bragging for days. Also, I heard Justice (on the Melbourne leg of the Aussie Tour at the time) flaunted it up at the BDO and also Room680!

The type of music I love varies from Progressive Rock to Electro but I won’t go all 1970’s on you guys, that would be plain cruel.

Now, with my little intro out of the way… onto the goods. Basically, being a kid living in Australia (close to Melbourne if you want to know..), I just want to post out all the cool bands thats out here. Most, of course you will know, but that doesn’t matter & I’ve surely missed some but don’t fret!

Barrage (FERAL MEDIA):

From last.fm:
Melbourne (Australia) based singer and producer, whose style falls between post-punk / electro-pop romantics and contemporary, rough and ready electronica. Originally from Brisbane (in the north-eastern state of Queensland), Barrage (real name Mark Gomes) has released one album – Hero or dirt? – so far. He has also played extensively across Australia’s eastern states.

Bit by Bats (Shiny Records):

from wikipedia:
An Australian three piece originally hailing from Adelaide, now living in Melbourne. Forming in 2003, the band had existed just a matter of weeks when they laid down their first demo (later released as their first ep). They sent it in as a CD-R to their local radio station, Three D Radio, who almost burnt a hole in the disc from constant play, well before the mysterious band stepped out to play their first show. The songs recalled influences of early-era The Cure, Joy Division and Television and fused them with a fresh raw and rough urgency.

Bumblebeez (MODULAR):

from wikipedia:
A hip-hop/rock band. Their first album is titled The Printz, although this is simply a compilation for an international release, comprised of all the tracks from their first two Australian EP’s ‘The White Printz’ and ‘The Red Printz’ (known to fans as the Printz saga).

Bumblebeez – Vila Attack

Cut Copy (MODULAR):

from wikipedia:
A band from Melbourne. Their sound, often labeled as indie dance, is much in the vein of contemporaries such as Daft Punk, and draws considerable influence from 80’s bands such as Fleetwood Mac, New Order, and ELO. Cut Copy is managed by Phil Hutcheson, and is signed to the record label Modular Recordings.

New single ‘Hearts On Fire’ coming out in March. The 12″ will have a Joakim remix as well. I’ve also heard/read that a new CD is coming? Anyone that can give me more info would be lovely.

Damn Arms (UNKNOWN RECORDS):

from last.fm:
Damn Arms are a Melbourne based indie rock outfit featuring Yama Indra (Vocals/Synth), Tim Sullivan (Vocals/Bass), Ian Jackson (Guitar) and Simon Parker (Drums). Expect soaring synth, sharp, fast drums, grungey guitar and solid bass grooves making some funky walls of sound.

Dardanelles (MOSQUITO’S TWEETER):

from last.fm:
We started a band, because we had the fire in our bellies and a giggle in the eyes. There’s four of us, from four cities. ravs is nineteen, nico be twenty-four, everyone else is in between. A year and a half playing in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide, in cubby house ensuites and the balconies of b-grade heads, on garbage truck pyramids and the trays of vine-ripened tractors, in fields of prosthetic limbs and the basement of the world’s tallest building.

Dead Can Dance (4AD):

from last.fm:
Were formed in Melbourne in 1981 and initially based in Australia. They disbanded in 1998, and temporarily reunited to do a highly successful world tour in 2005 featuring both new and old pieces. Assigning a musical genre to Dead Can Dance is difficult, as its style is particularly eclectic. However, its early work could be considered “darkwave“.

Faux Pas (INDEPENDENT):

from last.fm:
Is the alias of Tim Shiel, a producer based in Melbourne, Australia who makes layered electronic music that draws on samples, electronica and live instrumentation.

Gameboy/Gamegirl (DIY):

from Bigstereo:
Gameboy/Gamegirl sounds like an ode to Spank Rock but with that big party Australia twist. Whatever.

Gotye (INDEPENDENT):

From wikipedia:
Is the musical project of Wally DeBacker, a Melbourne musician. He has released two albums independently: Boardface (2004) and Like Drawing Blood (2006), the latter of which was entirely made in bedrooms around Melbourne yet still nominated for a J Award. His first single from Like Drawing Blood, “Learnalilgivinanlovin” was released in August, 2006.

K.I.M. (MODULAR/CUTTERS):

from the K.I.M. myspace:
KIM (Or Kimberley Isaac Moyes as his mother calls him) is erstwhile producer/drummer/programmer and one half of THE PRESETS, Australia’s foremost proponents of dashing pop/dance (non) sense and (not so) sensibility.

His 12″ on the Cutters label is down at Juno so grab grab graaaaab!

She is currently touring in support of her new album, which is being released by Remote Control locally and Kill Rock Stars in the USA.

from last.fm:
An electro-synth-rock band. They play dirty-organ-rock, stadium-disco-metal and sci-fi rollerskating jams. Beyond the sound and the fury, they take their listeners through landscapes haunted by Georgio Moroder, ELO and John Carpenter before entering the dark future world of Bronx Warriors 2020, as captured by a ’70s Italian film crew.

Sarah Blasko (DEW PROCESS):

from last.fm:
A popular Australian musician. An original and largely self-reliant musical artist, Blasko is known for her writing and production skills, as well as her unique voice and stage presence. Blasko’s 2004 debut album “The Overture & The Underscore” was met with critical acclaim and received gold accreditation in Australia, despite limited commercial radio play. In 2005 Blasko was rewarded for her work with four ARIA nominations, including Album of The Year.

Her second album, “What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have”, was released 21 October 2006. Recorded at Roundhead Studios and produced in collaboration with Robert F. Cranny and former Midnight Oil member Jim Moginie, “What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have” is a more introspective and mature album than her first.

The Presets (MODULAR):

from last.fm:
An electronic two piece based from Sydney, Australia. The Presets have been one of the biggest indie bands for the past few years in the Sydney area touring and supporting many well known bands such as 2 Many DJ’s and Ladytron. Their debut LP ‘Beams’ combines electro, rock, techno, pop and a handful of other genres together in a seamless manner. They’ve also released a series of EP’s ( 2003’s Blow Up EP, 2004’s Girl and the Sea EP ) prior to their debut LP. The song “Girl and the Sea” appeared on “The OC” and the duo began getting a lot of radio airtime soon afterwards.

The Presets are Julian Hamilton on synth/keyboard/vocals and Kimberly Moyes (K.I.M.) on drums. They list New Order among many others as influences.

I’m pretty sure their remixed CD “Presets Resets” on the Modular/Interscope label is just too devine to sink into. Do yourself a favour and grab it? Just a note, the tracks off the album have been blogged to death! Oh, also I will be posting the Dance Mix to ‘I Go Hard, I Go Home’ later today so keep your eyes peeled and your ears on standby as it is hawt hawt hawt! EDIT: here it is!

The Valentinos:

from last.fm:
An electronic dance/rock band. They are doing the rounds at many local venues supporting the release of their self titled EP which happens to be produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets. Some songs listed such as ‘Kafka!’, ‘Sell Yourself’ and ‘Man With a Gun’ are by this band.

I really am a huge fan of The Valentinos and their two EP’s are just gorgeous. Acquire their first “Damn & Damn Again” here and the self-titled EP here!

from last.fm:
An instrumental trio based in Sydney, Australia. Their music melds their jazz background (the three met at Sydney’s Conservatorium of Music) with post-rock and ambient electronica, resulting in a strange, beautiful conglomeration of myriad influences. The group’s members – Adrian Klumpes, Ben ‘Donny’ Waples, and Laurence Pike, on piano/keyboard/samples, electric/acoustic bass and drums/percussion respectively – also make extensive use of samples and processing in both studio and live shows.

Van She (MODULAR):

from last.fm:
Unashamedly taking bits and bobs from 80’s post punk, funk, synth pop, grunge, French house, film scores, 70’s Krautrock and the latest collection of innovative artists like Tom Vek and M83, Van She are that unique beast that one was beginning to believe no longer existed a band that takes all these influences from days gone but makes them sound unique, modern, & fresh. A lazy pastiche this isn’t.

Van She formed when Nick Routledge [vocals, guitar], Matt Van Schie [bass], Michael Di Francesco [synths] and Tomek Archer [drums] all responded to an ad in Sydney’s Drum Media and arrived at an audition for a vocalist for a doom metal band with influences including Sepultura, Entombed, Black Skull and Phil Collins to find the whole thing was a sham. You could call it the result of Satan at work, or you could call it fate.
An energetic rock band from Adelaide, Australia. The band consists of Joel Byrne (guitar, vocals), Thom Mayhew (bass), Joel ‘JC’ Carey (drums, percussion) and Adam Edwards (drums, percussion). They released their debut album “Vessels” on Sept 2, 2006 with the ‘Dash Dot’ label in Australia, and ‘4AD’ internationally.

from last.fm:
A band from Erskineville, Sydney, Australia. Their music is often described as retro-rock and is inspired by such grand acts of the 70’s as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. In 2004, Wolfmother began appearing at several high profile music events, such as Homebake and the Big Day Out. They also released their debut self-titled EP through Modular Recordings.

Well I’m getting quite puffed out right now but here are some remaining artists to check out: Dead Frenchman, Drama for Yamaha, Faker, Flamingo Crash, Like Bears, Peyote (came accross to me from a good mate of mine), Plug-in City, Teenager, Teenagers in Tokyo, The Five Venoms, The Ghosts, The Knife Machine and The Vasco Era.
