Alan Astor: Remixes DJ Amaze, Spoon, Lil’ Wayne & Chris Brown

alanastor Alan Astor: Remixes DJ Amaze, Spoon, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown

Boys like pussy and girls like money—West Philly representer, DJ Amaze reminded you of these simple facts on his recent ‘BoyznGirlz’ track—a downset hip-hop track that while poignant in its wisdom, was still lacking something…

Enter Brooklynite Alan Astor, frequent DJ Amaze collaborator, singer/songwriter and electronic music producer. Alan Astor took what was otherwise bland production and gave it a properly banging electro makeover (Jenny Jones has nothing on it). With the highest esteem, I say that this track ought to be the High Powered Boys‘ (Bobmo x Surkin) ‘Hoes Get Down’ for Summer ‘08 season. So hot right now:

Alan Astor has also contributed commissioned remixes Mixel Pixel and, notably, indie darlings, Spoon on their latest EP, ‘Don’t You Evah’, alongside remixes from Diplo, Matthew Dear, and others.

As an indie rock kid, Alan Astor had a pretty solid 2005 album, ‘Everything is Possible’ on Mental Monkey Records. In addition to quality originals, friend and N.Y.’s finest, Drop The Lime a.k.a. Curses!, contributed a remix. As did Oakland Anticon cats Restiform Bodies. The latter goes a little something like this:

The goods keep rolling in, with these bootleg remixes, one new remix of Lil’ Wayne’s undeniable ‘Lolipop’ and another from R&B sensation, Chris Brown, which reached #1 on HypeMachine upon its release in late ‘07:

Bay Area’s own, indie rapper (come group) WHY? of Anticon covering ’80s pop legends The Cure. WHY? drops his umpteenth album Alopecia, on March 11.

MP3: WHY? - Close to Me (The Cure cover)

Frenchman rocker Philippe Uminski, covering his most famous techno countrymen Daft Punk. Plus, more of the same from French indie-electro group Hektor.

MP3: Uminski - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Daft Punk cover)

MP3: Hektor - Technologic (Daft Punk cover)

Scottish folk songstress KT Tunstall freaking rapper Missy Elliot’s ‘Get Your Freak On’:

MP3: KT Tunstall - Get Your Freak On (Missy Elliot cover)

Sweedish singer/songwriter Jose Gonzalez covering the trip hop classic ‘Teardrop’ by Bristol’s Massive Attack:

MP3: Jose Gonzalez - Teardrop (Massive Attack cover)

New Wave group The Network covered horror punk legends The Misfits track ‘Teenagers from Mars’ back in 2004. The Network, if you didn’t know, released one the finest records of 2003 (seriously), ‘Money Money 2020′, and is rumored (with great evidence) to be Green Day incognito. (Similar to the recent emergence of Foxboro Hot Tubs in late ‘07—also a likely Green Day “secret” side-project).

MP3: The Network - Teenagers from Mars (Misfits cover)

Covering Freddie Mercury of British supergroup Queen is no easy feat. NJ/NY rocker Jimmy Gnecco of Ours is one of the few to hold a candle to the original on ‘Bohemian Rhapsody. Ours are a favorite of mine (like Queen) and set to release their third LP this year, as well as supporting Marilyn Manson on his upcoming tour.

MP3: Ours - Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen cover)

New Yorker indie/electronic rock band Cassettes Won’t Listen covering Blind Melon’s ‘Change’. This is part of a free 5-track covers EP titled, ‘One Alternative’ featuring the aforementioned, plus Pavement, Liz Phair, Sebadoh and Butter 08. Notice the ’90s theme. ‘One Alternative’ is a rip on the infamous cut-out bin favorite (and AIDS benefit compilation) ‘No Alternative‘. Download ‘One Alternative’ on Cassettes Won’t Listen’s official site while it’s available!

MP3: Cassettes Wont Listen - Change (Blind Melon cover)

And I’ll leave you with this fun take on Britney Spears heyday hit ‘Toxic’. It comes from British electro-pop cool guys Metronomy. When I listen, I picture Brit doing a fancy little polka dance in some fashionable short-pants.

MP3: Metronomy - Toxic (Britney Spears cover)

How y’all dig these “Under the Covers” posts? Who’s down to start a Slayer-style Radiohead cover band with me? We can call it “Slayerhead” and play at airport lounges (in hell). \m/ \m/

Sole and the Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers

sole_skyrider Sole and the Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers

anticon artist Sole, known to his parents as Tim Holland, will release Sole and the Skyrider Band, his first album recorded entirely with a live band on Oct. 23. Although Sole’s last full length came out well over 2 years ago, the rapper has kept busy touring and also playing under his alias ‘mansbestfriend’.

Sole met the Orlando based three-piece Skyrider after returning home from living abroad. Skyrider relocated to Flagstaff, Arizona, where Sole has been living since, enjoying the heat and making music. Wrap your PC speakers around “Shipwreckers” a track where Sole jacks the hook from the Guy Debord film, Refutation of All Judgments.

MP3:  Sole and the Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers

The album will be released October 23rd on anticon, of course. And because Bumpsdick & I used be real big on the backpack-indie-rap and because our anticon tag was severely lacking, here’s a cornucopia of my old anticon related faves:

MP3:  Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Candle

MP3:  Atmosphere - Trying To Find A Balance

MP3:  Themselves - Thisboutthecitytoo [Recommended]

MP3:  Boom Bip & Doseone - The Bird Catcher

MP3:  Atmosphere - Summer Song

MP3:  13 & God - Men of Station

MP3:  Atmosphere - If I Was Santa Claus

Surely you have all these albums in your collection but if one of the homies borrowed a copy and never gave it back you can re-up here Sole and the Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers.

El-P drops one soon.

el-p1 El-P drops one soon.

El-P’s new album ‘I’ll Sleep When Your Dead’ drops soon. I’m hoping it will be as legendary as Fantastic Damage. That album was on super duper mad repeat the summer of 2002. In my opinion F.D. was El-P’s best work since Funcrusher Plus.

Tracks from the new album were posted on My Old Kentucky Blog & So Much Silence.

All this inter-talk of new El-P albums made me dig some old albums out of the archives & reminisce.
El-P - Deep Space 9mm

Also, while we’re reminiscing, anyone remember the beef between El-P & Anticon member Sole circa 2000? Sole was just putting out his first albums & thought it would be a good idea to go on record & diss El-P on the track “Dear Elpee”. El-P writes his rebuttal & releases it on Mr. Len’s Class-X (Tribute To Company Flow) & hilarity ensues.

Listen to Sole’s Track:
Sole - Dear Elpee

And then listen to El-P’s track complete with recorded phone conversation between Sole & El Producto himself. He totally rips the young buck a new one.
