Being the devoted Chromatics fangirls that we are we’re always hanging on everything they release. It’s been semi-quiet on the Chromatics front since they released their newest full length ‘Night Drive’. But recently a demo of a new version of ‘Lady’ surfaced on the ‘nets (thanks GVSB!).
And whilst were touching on Johnny Jewel’s production skills partake in this Glass Candy instrumental which can only be described as a masterpiece. Not sure if Johnny is going to leave this as an instrumental or have Ida No do her thing, either way we’re creaming our jeans over this one.
I know your guys’ Chromatics game must be tight, but if for some reason it isn’t you can cop a copy of Night Drive on CD from Insound. Download more Chromatics jems from their myspace.
Johnny Jewel, Adam Miller and Ruth Radelet collectively known as Chromatics released their fourth full length album this month, appropriately titled ‘IV’. The band has under gone many changes since their inception in 2002, but the current lo-fi electronic manifestation is by far our favorite. Johnny Jewel of Glass Candy never ceases to amaze us with his superb production skills and Ruth’s tender voice wafts beautifully over the score.
MP3:Chromatics - Healer
This is the third recorded version of ‘Healer’ (that I know of).
The Cd is available direct mail order from the band. Later it will be released on Italians Do It Better. You can purchase past Chromatics albums, including the critically acclaimed Chrome Ratz vs basement Rulz, here.
Okay, I’ll admit, I was a little up in arms over Glass Candy’s new musical direction at first. I mean, having seen them in one of their early incarnations, the new stuff seemed to pale in comparison. I thought to myself, where’s the heat? Where was the passion? Where’s Ida No’s high pitched shrill that I loved so much. But now thanks to a few other bloggers I have seen the light and beauty of the new Glass Candy & am a card carrying fanatic. If you have not yet heard the gospel & the good news of all the Glass Candy has to offer you, let me preach.
Glass Candy is currently on tour & possibly coming to your town, check their myspace for the tour dates. If you want to know what Glass Candy used to sound like check out our older Glass Candy post.
For a similar religious experience check out Chromatics whom Glass Candy often makes music with.
We ain’t done some shout outz in daaaays. It’s time we got back in the business of doing that, cuz there’s a buncha blogs out there that are on point. One of which is a brand new one done by graphic artist RA909 of electriksuicide.com who has recently done work for Le CastleVania, The Police & Burton Snowboards.
Aside from being an excellent graphic artist, he’ got an exceptional ear for music as well. visit his new blog which is both visually & aurally appealing.
& blog masters of the universe 20JFG are consistently breaking new artist & tunes on to the scene. These guys are THE tastemakers. If you don’t have them bookmarked or don’t subscribe to their feed, you need to fix that.
Last week they posted two tracks from the Chromatics forth coming CD. This is a different version of ‘Hands in The Dark’ than the one that appeared on the tour CDR they were distributing at their shows last year.
Another artist they broke was Norway’s Skatebard. They posted ‘Love Attack’ last year, But now they are posting the vocal version of the track. It’s a must have.
Gorilla vs Bear posted a Glass Candy (I guess they’ve dropped the & ‘The Shattered Theatre’ portion of their name) cover of Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Iko Iko’ & a cover of Kraftwerk’s ‘Computer Love’ which are pretty tasty. You’ll love them if you are down with the Chromatics sound which if you have good taste, you are.
Still, I’m more fond of the 2002 scream/rock Glass Candy & The Shattered Theatre sound. I remember seeing G.C. playing at ‘The Outhouse’ which was nothing more than a little shack behind Los Gatos High School. Ida No’s high powered vocals & Saran Wrap skirt had every pimple faced teenager’s eyes glued to the stage. Okay, maybe the skirt wasn’t Saran Wrap, but that shit was plastic & see through.
