Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984: Basura’s Pick of the Week

mute audio docs Mute Audio Documents 1978 1984: Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is ‘Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984′.

Compiled of Mute Records’ singles from the first 6 years of their existence, (which ends up being 128 tracks, including output from bigger bands like Depeche Mode & Yazoo), ‘Mute Audio Documents’ is, simply put, absolute essential listening for the music aficionado/lover.

With a diverse and eclectic roster that includes acts like indie dance punks Art Brut, industrial electronic visionaries Cabaret Voltaire, avant-garde vocalist Diamanda Galas, electro/synthpop darlings The Knife, techno god Plastikman, and many many more, there’s no doubt that Mute Records has influenced countless bands, musicians, and music sub-genres since their inception as a label 30 years ago.

Below is a list of standout tracks from ‘Mute Audio Documents’. With musical styles ranging from proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and no-wave, there should be a little something for every single one of you ‘Toofers’ to enjoy!

I urge you to listen carefully and take notes- you can learn alot from these pioneers…

Halloween and horror inspire some great music. Here’s a few of my very favorite spooky tunes to get you in the mood. No ‘Thriller’ here—just rockabilly-punks The Cramps, shoegaze-y EDM Frenchies M83, composer for TV Milton DeLugg (covering TV composer Jack Marshall), Def-Juxian Hip Hop beatmaker RJD2, 80’s rap wiseguys DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, and a Cousin Cole and Flufftronix remix of a Misfits punk classic.

Ce Ce Penison is the new “Blog House”, and Blog House was the new tight pants, and tight pants was the new black. Chuch!

Anyone feeling this post should consider picking a house compilation CD (or ten). There’s lots of good ones with lots of ’80s/’90s house on ‘em.

p.s. ‘Acid Tracks’ is probably the first acid house track ever. Their ‘87 serves most producers ‘08.
p.s.s. ‘Android’ is The Prodigy’s very first single.

Note, I swaped out the originally uploaded Phuture track, from a worn 12 minute vinyl original to a CD quality 6 minute edit

Old Rap Wednesdays: 91-94 rap radio mixtape

missingtoof 1991 1994 rap Old Rap Wednesdays: 91 94 rap radio mixtape

A little late ’cause it’s a busy week, but I aim to make it up to you! This week is a little different, in that it’s light on bios and banter, but heavy on mixtape bangin’-ery.

So here’s the idea, I’ve collected some favorites from 1991-1994 that were played-the-hell-out-of on the radio in their day, but are very far off the beaten path today. This collection might be a little west-coast-centric, but don’t hate, that’s just the extent that my little boombox would tune to growing up in L.A.

Play it over and over in circles, ad nauseum, to replicate authentic radio programming circa 1992/3/4:

MP3: Icy Blu – I Wanna Be Your Girl (1991)

(Note that this isn’t from radio, these are all encoded digitally from CDDA, and are album versions in all their full F word glory.)

If you can’t feel this brand of “Urban Top 40″, then go crawl the fuck back into your backpacks. But that’s not you, you love this shit!

Do I listen to ‘Urban Radio’ much anymore?—Not really. Do you? Commercial radio is a wounded/dead format in the age of iPod + Missingtoof and the millions of other options. But, oh! Back in the day, radio was a constant, when even the bad was good (case in point; Icy Blu, who is essentially Vanilla Ice with tits and we love it).

Most all of these records are out of print, but not hard to come by through secondary markets like like eBay or Amazon affiliates.

If you’re fiending some hip hop history lesson, a good start would be this Wikipedia page and see where you end up.
