10 Print “Hello”.
Again. Fancy meeting you here. Thanks for coming back. We’re glad to be back. Here’s a little story on what all happened regarding this here blog, and what you can expect from now on. If you won’t allow me a few minutes to bore you, no hard feelings, just scroll the bottom and there are some tunes to download.

Why we disappeared.

Hosting rich media is expensive when your site is successful. We tried hard to make this site good, and had moderate success to a point where it crippled us. The overhead is huge when people can easily nab 2 gigabytes of mp3 files our homepage, often with only one or two ad impressions which amount to a fraction of a cent (I’m not complaining, just sayin’). Every time someone downloads anything, we are paying for the resources for them to do so—and we’re happy to do it, as long as we can stand to so do. We’re not blogging for the money (a music blog in itself is a shitty business model), but it came to a point where we couldn’t afford to pay out of pocket to keep the tunes flowing (recession session).

But why not use a DDL (direct-download) service like Mediafire, Rapidshare or zShare?

In a word: Crap. We don’t love to read blogs that use those services, we surely didn’t want to run a blog that uses them. We like the ease of being able to stream off our site. We want you to be able to download with a single click. The DDL business model is based on slowing you down, obfuscating the download process and forcing you to wait and watch ads. We thought it better to disappear, than to conform to lesser standards. Quality has always been a top priority.

Why we came back.

In our dormant stage, we put ourselves in a better place financially and in terms of business sense. So, now we are able to come back and run the kind of blog we want to run. We’re back because we enjoy blogging and we love music. Anecdotally, my partner, Disaster, and I met through LiveJournal at the beginning of the decade (similar to the backstory of everybody’s favorite Stereogum), through a near dead-on similarity of taste in music, design, and excitement over web technology. At this point blogger is a part of who we are.

What we were doing.

Disaster is hemmed up in Berkley making iPhone apps. I’m holding down Los Angeles; I’m getting by doing all sorts of design-y jobs, whilst schoolin’ and throwing our Missingtoof hat in the DJ/promoter arena (more on this later).

So how did the server situation get solved?

After plenty of well-meaning-but-not-so-great advice, our new BFF Alex K, former engineer at Beatport (best mp3 store ever, btw). Lent us his hand and quizzed other homies at Beatport for solutions to our server woes. What we came up with is a custom multi-server solution from eSecureData for mp3s and the front-end remaining on MediaTemple. I have faith these servers will serve us well (and by us I mean you and me).

Now, without further dudes… Working mp3s, the first of many.

There is an not-so-underlying message here, borrowed from ’80s pop stars Simple Minds at their finest hour (still chugging along with a new album in ‘09). You know the original, but have you heard these? First an eerie, minimal-ish techno cover by London’s Dino Le Cassino from his 2007 Audio Therapy release. This one’s really grown on me. And second, an official remix by Sweden’s Pacific! (alternate remix page) that goes mellow ‘lectro and appeared on the recent ‘Don’t You’ advertising campaign record for JC Penny. (However it was New Found Glory’s effort that was selected for the national advertising, go figure. Whatevs.)

Don’t you, don’t you, don’t you, for-get about ‘toof.

It’s got that Geto Boys ‘Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me’ sample that’s forever fresh.

[snip mp3]2009-03/kittens/Glass Candy – Geto Boys (Leif Remix).mp3[/snip]

And since we haven’t had a wholly Leif-centric post since his ‘Flossy Bounce’ EP years ago, let’s keep good ch00nz coming with these: The track ‘Black Magic’ & remixes from last year’s ‘Black Magic Promo EP’. Nice work in the original & in the remixes from Swedish houser The Touch with the haunting vocals of Swedish singer Lina and the other from fellow New Yorkers, Stay High that takes a fidget/dubstepped approach.

[snip mp3]2009-03/kittens/Leif – Black Magic (Stay High Remix).mp3[/snip]

Keeping the good stuff coming, I must say I’m quite partial to this cover of Stockholm’s finest siren, Lykke Li. Leif’s voice is so far apart from Lykke Li’s—& the vibe is so different—yet it works just the same. An interesting take:

[snip mp3]2009-03/kittens/Leif – Little Bit (Lykke Li cover).mp3[/snip]

And finishing up with another gem that’s been sitting on in the ol’ inbox. One from Brooklyn’s Neon Coyote, a remix of Leif’s ‘Timbs’.

[snip mp3]2009-03/kittens/Leif – Timbs (Neon Coyote Slow Jam).mp3[/snip]

Purchase last year’s ‘Black Magic EP’, the sixth release on blog-gone-label, Palms Out Records, through Beatport.com. And sit tight for Leif’s soon-to-be-released next solo EP, as well as and EP with his band Kids in the Garden, the reincarnation of the late, Aries Noise.

This cover is just one in a series of sixty (that’s right, 60!) new cover songs, served up free as part of Buffet Libre’s ‘Rewind 2′ project. Buffet Libre put the tracks up free last week and we’ve marinated in Buffet downloads ever since—Does this sound appetizing?: Dragonette covering ZZ Top. Frankmusik covering The Police, and Cryptonites remixing Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Those are just a tiny sample of the delectable tunes served up, right now, for free, at Buffet Libre. Go hungry. Dig in.

Royal Rumble also laced us up with something different—a mix in the minimal techno vein, although not in it’s purest form. Perhaps it’s faux minimal or “MnmLOL” as Royal Rumble have coined it.

Straight outta Birmingham, Alabama, COMPUTER CLUB makes brilliant electro tracks of giant proportions (so your playlist better make a lot of room). COMPUTER CLUB is alias of one Mike Diasio, better known as Gigantor, of Atlanta-based drum’n'bass group, Evol Intent. After Evol Intent established itself as one of America’s premier drum’n'bass talents, its three members have been making departures: First Evol Intent’s A.J. rechristened himself as Treasure Fingers and y’all have been shaking it across the dancefloor since. Next Evol Intent’s Knick embarked on a “Bangfest” with a friend, Rochester’s Kill The Noise, in Ludachrist (Big Stereo will put you up on Ludachrist, if you aren’t knowing). Lastly, Evol Intent’s Gigantor breaks apart to form COMPUTER CLUB.

The talent is huge, so expect good things from CC, first out of the gate is ‘Load Rocket’ which will be released through N.Y.’s System Recordings.

MP3: COMPUTER CLUB – Load Rocket

Presumably, the B-side to ‘Load Rocket’ will be ‘Flat Response’. Sit tight for that, and for now, partake in some cover action (of giant proportions), with COMPUTER CLUB’s electro take on new wave icons New Order big hit, ‘Bizzare Love Triangle’.

The Network, if you didn’t know, released one the finest records of 2003 (seriously), ‘Money Money 2020′, and is rumored (with great evidence) to be Green Day incognito. (Similar to the recent emergence of Foxboro Hot Tubs in late ‘07—also a likely Green Day “secret” side-project).

The Under The Covers column returns! We’ve slowly been collecting more cover songs that run the gamut from awesome to odd to awful. All varieties are worth hearing! Listen in awe or disdainful laughter.

30 Seconds to Mars covers Kanye West’s ‘Stronger’ live on BBC Radio 1. This falls into the laughable category even though frontman Jared Leto delivers the vocals so earnestly. They saved the Daft Punk vocals, so don’t expect any. I’d be rolling if they tried.

File this under fantastic, I first heard do this Pink Floyd cover at last month’s Vegoose festival and was very impressed. Not many groups can come close to a classic, but the The Shins do.

And in that same vein, this Zwan (Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame’s 2001-2003 project) cover of Metal gods Iron Maiden on ‘Mark of the Beast’.
MP3: Zwan – Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden cover)

Next up, Lightspeed Champion covering The Beatles immortal John Lennon. Lightspeed Champion is Devonte Hynes or just “Dev”, formerly of thrash-rap-punk group Test Icicles. Test Icicles remains one of my favorite things ever. I seriously moaned and writhed while morning the death of the Test Icicles last year. But the musicians live on! Dev maintains a blog at TheWorldForgot.com, there he puts up a great many home recordings—quite different from Test Icicles, but great in a whole new way:

Ladytron getting sexy R’n'B’d out covering Tweet’s slut-anthem ‘Oops (Oh My)’.
Had a fantastic weekend, how about y’all? We caught the Crystal Castles show at the Mezzanine this Saturday and, damn. They sound even more amazing live than their studio recordings. The Toxic Avenger, Frankie Chan, Lemonade & Richard Oh?! and Miss Toats held down the rest of the evening superbly.

The good times came to a screeching halt when the alarm clock went off this morning. I rolled out of bed, grabbed the first pair of slacks I could find on the floor and stumbled in to the office today. I am currently sitting at my desk crying on the inside. The voicemail light is flashing and my outlook inbox is full of unread items which I’m desperately trying to avoid. God, I wish I was still at home under the covers. Here’s some covers of a different kind that I wish we could all cuddle together underneath, but responsibility calls.

MP3: Klaxons – No Diggity (Blackstreet cover)

And the track that The Toxic Avenger & Frankie Chan used to kill the crowd on Saturday, for good measure. And yes, I know it’s not a cover, so please refrain from all the ‘this isnt a cover!’ comments. Word.

Hybrids Kids was a ‘compilation’ released on Cherry Red Records in 1979. It was supposedly a collection of songs made by a number of bands from Peabody, Kansas. However, In actuality all the songs on the album were created by British keyboardist Morgan Fisher, who was best known for his time spent in glam rock band Mott The Hoople.

“Recorded while Fisher was still in Mott, Hybrid Kids is an affectionate demolition job of pop classics”. And that it is! Fantastically experiment and almost whimsical covers of seminal pop songs. Fisher casts aside any formula or structure the original tracks were supposed to contain with wanton abandon, leaving only his musical musings intact.

I stumbled on these ‘Hybrid Kids’ tracks many a years ago and had no clue that these twelve songs were not made some angst filled teenage Kansans and I’m not sure which story is more incredible, the fallacy or truth.

MP3: Hybrid Kids – British Standard Unit – D’ya Think I’m Sexy

MP3: Hybrid Kids – R.W. Atom – You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling

From 1968 to 1970 Morgan Fisher played with pop band The Love Affair. Between 1972 and 1973 he formed the progressive rock band called Morgan. From 1973 to 1976 he joined Mott the Hoople, who were initially produced by David Bowie. In 1980 Fisher conceived and produced the unique Miniatures album (51 one-minute tracks by various popular bands of the time). In addition he played with Queen on their 1982 tour of Europe.

Fischer now resides in Japan and works as a keyboardist, producer, composer, film scorer, and photographer.

In 1997 ‘Hybrid Kids’ was re-released on CD and sometimes you can find a copy on Amazon, but right now there aren’t any available. But that’s okay, because you can find the original vinyl on gemm. One in Very Good condition goes for $136.00! Not bad for an album that was made on a 4 Track for 25 pounds.

Johnny Jewel, Adam Miller and Ruth Radelet collectively known as Chromatics released their fourth full length album this month, appropriately titled ‘IV’. The band has under gone many changes since their inception in 2002, but the current lo-fi electronic manifestation is by far our favorite. Johnny Jewel of Glass Candy never ceases to amaze us with his superb production skills and Ruth’s tender voice wafts beautifully over the score.
