Hensforth, one of Canada’s promising young DJs/Producers, gives DJ Shadow’s ‘Midnight In A Perfect World’ (from his groundbreaking first album ‘Endtroducing’) the special remix treatment that’ll easily do the trick to keep the club kids bobbin’ like chickenheads!
Here are a couple more Hensforth remixes, taking yet again classic songs from the nineties era (this time in the rock vein) and blending them with present-day artists to keep the alternative/hip hop folks happy…
This one’s got some rap samples from Mike Jones‘ ‘Still Tippin’ track over Smashing Pumpkins‘ ‘Zero’ for a B-More-Rap-Rock joint that will murder on the dancefloor…
Bay area native and hip hop hero, DJ Shadow has crafted a new soundscape for his home and ours, San Francisco. The song is part of Nokia’s currently running “What Does Your City Sound Like?” contest. DJ Shadow and Nokia are hosting a competition where you are you to capture the essence of a city in music. DJ Shadow sets the tone with the plainly titled, ‘San Francisco’.
If you want to submit your own city-inspired soundscape: Go to Nokiatrendslab.com, read the rules and submit your stuff by the May 19th, 4:00pm (GMT) deadline.
If you need inspiration, DJ Shadow has forever got you. Enjoy these epic favorites:
After much waiting and speculation, Radiohead has released the details about their seventh album, ‘In Rainbows’. Still under the guidance of superproducer Nigel Godrich (ever since ‘The Bends’)—but now label-free—after fulfilling their contractual obligation to their former boss, Capitol with 2004’s ‘Hail to the Thief’. Radiohead is now more indie rock than your favorite indie rock band.
Now, get a load of this; the part that’s important to you: Beginning October 10th, less than one week away, you can get the full retail album through Radiohead’s official site and pay what you think it’s worth (and/or what is feasible for you). The mp3 files are yours to keep, forever, DRM-free and ready to be listened to and loved.
Alternatively, there is a tangible and glorious ‘In Rainbows’ “DISCBOX” package for sale that will ship in December—it’s pictured above, costs £40.00 (approx. $81) and will appeal to those who value vinyl LPs, 1411kbps CD masters, package design and album art (put me down for one of those types). …and yet, another option, a regular CD package slated for early 2008 release. But, the pay-what-you-will download deal is what’s current.
Leave it to the best rock band in the world to give this a try. An experiment in “gift economy“! Upon checkout at InRainbows.com, if you’ve selected the “DOWNLOAD” option, you will see the payment field is blank and the only guidance is that “IT’S UP TO YOU“. No, really. $0.00 is perfectly acceptable (you bloody pinchfists!).
Can’t wait ’til October 10th? The blogisfear is teeming with recent concert recordings of ‘In Rainbows’ tracks. So, instead of doing that, I’m passing the baton to Rawkblog, which has a done a fantastic job at collecting these various live recordings right here.
What I really want to do instead is post the classics (one from each album) and some of my favorite bastardizations of classics (a.k.a. the remixes)!
DJ Shadow remixed Radiohead in 2003, however the remix was rejected by Capitol because of the heavy sampling of George W. Bush speeches. DJ shadow pressed up some whitelabel 10″ singles of the track on die-cut vinyl that looks like a demonic Dick Cheney head (see it at Discogs). The limited run was given away with a purchase on his site some years back.
Whet your appetite? Gobble up classic Radiohead at Amazon.com (CDs are not a dead format!). Get on Radiohead’s InRainbows.com to “pre-order” the download or discbox. It’s like desert, for your ears.
My vote for best American festival goes to Goldenvoice’s consistently good Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival going on this weekend. Missingtoof will be dancing in the desert for three days! If you’re headed there too, I’m sure you’re equally excited about what you’re going to be able to see and stressed out about all the stuff you’re undoubtedly going to have to miss… Talk about tough decisions! Here’s the breakdown of what’s happening in Indio, California this weekend:
The lineup is overwhelming (maybe the scheduler can help?)! Björk/Soulwax/Ed Banger/Etcetera/Etcetera/Amazing/Amazing—all that aside, the singularly most hyped act this year has been the planned reunion of Rage Against the Machine, after a 7 year break-up. Last time I caught these guys play it was riot, like, literally! They did a free protest show (supported by Ozomatli with Cut Chemist still intact) against the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in downtown Los Angeles during the 2000 Election campaign. The concert was staged right outside the convention in an enclosed ‘protest area’ and that scene ended in a small-scale riot with cops on armored horses and rubber bullets and the whole fun bit! Let’s see if we can outdo ourselves this time!
If you prefer your RATM mashed-up and glitch’d-down, try and find this bastardized collection of MP3s titled enRAGEd. Maybe someone over that this originating site will bring it back to life someday if we pester them! I’ve heard a few tracks and they’re very IDM-ish.
