Canadian electro powerhouse MSTRKRFT’s Bounce PE is being released October 7th, we know your iPod’s, like ours, eagerly await that business. But, before that day MSTRKFT’s Fist Of God tour touches down in the bay area this Wednesday at Mezzanine with Felix Cartal and Congorock in tow. With a lineup like that it promises to be a level 5 natural disaster.
I expect to see all of you Bay dummies all up in the spot. Until d-day, here’s some mp3’s to whet your whistle:
Vancouver’s finest and Ableton-style party wrecker, Felix Cartal, has remixed Sweden’s electro “it” kids, Mr. Miyagi. Miyagi X Felix?! The pairs’ similar bang-it-out styles didn’t cancel out in tandem, instead it just became exponential. BANG IT OUT. All caps.
I’d say Felix Cartal’s signature sound is “teeth-grinding foot-stomping basslines and nutso melodies that glaze a ruff beat like petroleum jelly on toast”—but “electro”, “techno”, or “house” will also do just fine.
Felix Cartal will be playing dates in the US through April, as part of the Scion Tour with friends LA Riots, Bloody Beetroots. Peep any of their MySpace pages for details.
Know who’s the fucking man? FELIX CARTAL, all caps, is the fucking man.
Cartal is a child of France but his affinity for his second home, Canada is strong. In his newest work, Felix Cartal pays homage to the city where he lived and partied and was undoubtedly inspired. The track is ‘Vancouver’, which bookends his previous track, ‘Montreal Dreams’.
By Sea, Land, and Air, (and Dance Music) We Prosper (Vancover’s new and improved motto).
Our friends at Trash Menagerie have an interview with Felix Cartal where you can pick up ‘Montreal Dreams’ at 96kbps. If you’re thirsty for more info, there’s an earlier interview at Floukids.
Felix’s catalog between his 2006 debut and now is small but immense. The most recent favorite here at Missingtoof, is the B-side to Moving Units recent ‘Crash ‘N’ Burn Victims’ single on So Sweet Records, which we put up a while back.
So what other remixes has Felix laced? Try on MSTRKRFT, Dragonette, and a surprising very (very) favorite remix of Ashlee Simpson. Now, as Felix notes in the aforementioned interview, he does have a thing for female pop vocals, so his Britney Spears remix was an apt follow up.
What to do when you love them all and can’t decide? All or nothing, baby.
Oh man, that’s fresh. Let’s go overkill and pile on the Felix Cartal. Dude should be all caps at all times. This is large. From oldest to newest, let’s indulge further:
Which reminds me, how sick is Scotland’s Hostage? Felix Cartal, in his globetrotting, has recently settled in Scotland and clicked up with his electro-fied kindred spirit. A remix is a beautiful thing.
Moving Units were one one of the best things to happen to indie rock when they emerged in 2003. More than a few of us have had their first album, ‘Dangerous Dreams’ in heavy rotation ever since and have been waiting and wishing for a return to (highly-danceable) form. Well, on October 9th we are all given deliverance with the release of the Moving Units sophomore LP, ‘Hexes for Exes’.
The devoted can now pre-order the new album at Moving Units online store. Also available for y’all to snag is a special package including an exclusive T-shirt designed by Christian Joy (famed for her outrageous get-ups for Yeah Yeah Yeah’s front woman and fashionista Karen O).
Get excited! Here’s a pair of classics from ‘Dangerous Dreams’ (there are so many):
Now, what have Moving Units been up to these years between album A and album B? We aside from touring with Blur and doing grips of shows and becoming all famous, lead singer Blake Miller has been DJing gigs around his L.A. residence and from coast to coast, as well as producing remixes under his side project, Weird Science with partner in production Steve Aoki. The duo have produced some solid remixes including notable work for Bloc Party, Rooney, and Peaches. However, my favorite is definitely this gem for the talented, Under the Influence of Giants.
Zhiguli sent us a pair of mash-ups created within their ‘Distortion Disco Mix’ we posted last month (get it from the archive). Good mixes are made from good parts, now you can get at the building blocks.
Remember SebastiAn’s remix of Kavinsky’s ‘Testerosa Overdrive’ mashed with David Byrne’s ‘Lazy’—’member how sick it sounds! This mash-up was my personal highlight of the ‘Distortion Disco Mix’ and now it’s bite-sized:
