electro Before Electro There Was... Electro (Afrika Bambaataa, Hashim, Cybotron, Newcleus, Twilight 22 & Freestyle)

Who remembers simpler times, when “electro” was a brand of hip-hip infused electronic-funk (if I’ve lost you, think Kraftwerk meets Frankie Smith meets Melle Mel). All that together produced a brilliant and cutting edge sound unique sound that helped define the late 1980s.

Of course today’s “electro” is a different animal. The nature of language is to be lazy and things get truncated—so most of what ends up on this blog tagged as “electro” is more accurately “electro house”, hard “synthpop”, so-called “electroclash” (a term that’s always had a messy ambiguity and stigma), and the place where rock and rap meet good old fashion techno (and sometimes even straight up techno with a PR makeover—because the word “techno” is out and “electro” is marketable).

So, what’s in a name? Getting back to the purest form, this post is “electro” as many of us came to it—how I came to it as a kid and how I understood it for nearly two decades. A deep nod to Afrika Bambaataa, Hashim, Cybotron, Newcleus, Twilight 22 & Freestyle (a.k.a. Pretty Tony) for helping throwdown the pavement for our generation of electronic music. Musical roads get paved and repaved—a little wider and a little thicker each decade:

For further study on some west coast flavored electro (a bit different), you can extract some Egyptian Lover and Chris “The Glove” Taylor & Ice T from the archives (here & there).

If you want to build your old school electro library, look into the ‘Street Sounds: Electric Funk‘ compilations on Amazon (or if you’re feeling rich and advernterous, try the ‘Streetsounds: Electro’ compilations on Gemm. There’s like two dozen of ‘em to keep you boogalooin’ all damn day, everyday).

If you didn’t know, now you know, sucka.

Nu Freestyle?

wit Nu Freestyle?
My moms used to say that everything comes back into style. I always thought that was a fallacy she held on to in hopes that one day her clothes would be semi-cool again. But in fashion & music it’s evident that she was correct. BJM proved that 60’s psych rock could once again popular again, and 80’s pop? Hell, did it ever really go away?

It seems as though almost all past decades and genre’s have been re-hashed in some form or another. All except for the late 80’s most stand out genre (for myself); freestyle, or sometimes called High NRG or Latin Hip Hop. I just got that Ultimate Freestyle collection I saw on an infomercial & that shit, is the shit. You know you fools go crazy when some Debbie Deb or Shannon comes on in the club. And you can’t fake the funk on Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam.

These days we’ve got nu-rave, nu-noise, nu-disco, where the ef is the nu-freestyle? No one got’s love for Expose? Where’s the Stevie B’s cover bands? I kid, but seriously, it’s a style of music that has a lot to offer, fun and keeps you moving on the dancefloor. I wish more producers gave the genre a nod, like these acts:

MP3:  Red White Rose – No One Puts Baby In The Corner

W.I.T. was produced by the infamous Larry Tee but the 12″ is mad elusive. Hit up Gemm for a copy.

Red White Rose’s (a.k.a. Rutherford) ‘No One Puts Baby In a Corner’ was released on Creme Organization’s ‘Are We Too Late For The Trend‘ release which came out in ‘03. I got mine on vinyl at Streetlight because the main record buyer is a genius (and also writes for missingtoof)! I haven’t been able to find a link for a physical release, but you can purchase the digital version from Juno Download.

All you producers bust out them Roland TR-808’s and get to work! Trinere 4 lyfe!

The Freestyle Post!

No, not the kind of freestyle you do when you’re in the shower. Or the kind you hear the urban white kids spittin’ to each other at bus stops.

No.

I’m talking about the freestyle that you used to try to breakdance to on a piece of cardboard on the side of your house after school got out until your dad came home and told you to knock that shit off before the neighbors think you’re special. Well, at least, that’s how it was for me.

freestyllle The Freestyle Post!

Break out the windbreakers and get your listen on.

Nice and Wild – Diamond Girl

Trinere – They’re Playing Our Song
