It’s always nice when things we like collide! This is like some MFin’ rainbow sprinkles & butterscotch on my strawberry frogurt right here!

What it is, is, N.Y. posse, Leif (once PalmsOut representer) doing a workover of Glass Candy’s homage to 5th Ward gangsters, Geto Boys, on the track, ‘Geto Boys’. It’s got that Geto Boys ‘Mind Playin’ Tricks on Me’ sample that’s forever fresh.

And since we haven’t had a wholly Leif-centric post since his ‘Flossy Bounce’ EP years ago, let’s keep good ch00nz coming with these: The track ‘Black Magic’ & remixes from last year’s ‘Black Magic Promo EP’. Nice work in the original & in the remixes from Swedish houser The Touch with the haunting vocals of Swedish singer Lina and the other from fellow New Yorkers, Stay High that takes a fidget/dubstepped approach.

Keeping the good stuff coming, I must say I’m quite partial to this cover of Stockholm’s finest siren, Lykke Li. Leif’s voice is so far apart from Lykke Li’s—& the vibe is so different—yet it works just the same. An interesting take:

And finishing up with another gem that’s been sitting on in the ol’ inbox. One from Brooklyn’s Neon Coyote, a remix of Leif’s ‘Timbs’.

Purchase last year’s ‘Black Magic EP’, the sixth release on blog-gone-label, Palms Out Records, through Beatport.com. And sit tight for Leif’s soon-to-be-released next solo EP, as well as and EP with his band Kids in the Garden, the reincarnation of the late, Aries Noise.

The Long Blondes – Nostalgia (Glass Candy remix) + Glass Candy – Animal Imagination (Instrumental)

the long blondes The Long Blondes Nostalgia (Glass Candy remix) + Glass Candy Animal Imagination (Instrumental)

U.K. Quintet The Long Blondes recently called it quits in late 2008 mainly due to lead guitarist Dorian Cox having a stroke. Since their inception in 2003 the band released two full length albums and one collection of their singles released on Rough Trade appropriately named “Singles”. Their last album Couples was produced by production genius Erol Alkan.

Portland’s ever genre-changing sensations Glass Candy have remixed one of the stand out tracks on The Long Blondes final album. Nostalgia is a proper title for a song to listen to whilst we reflect on The Long Blondes awesome existence.

You’ll recognize where bits and pieces of this remix came from if you’ve heard the early instrumental version of Glass Candy’s Animal Imagination which sounds nothing like the version of the song that is currently sporting the same title on their MySpace. Name change, perhaps. If you haven’t heard it, please do:

Word on the street is that The Long Blondes former lead vocalist Kate Jackson has a solo album in the works. Scottish band 1990s also said Kate will guest spot on one the songs off their forth coming album ‘Kicks’, which is due out in March.

All of The Long Blondes albums are available for purchase on iTunes go them up if you haven’t and reminisce with us.

Being the devoted Chromatics fangirls that we are we’re always hanging on everything they release. It’s been semi-quiet on the Chromatics front since they released their newest full length ‘Night Drive’. But recently a demo of a new version of ‘Lady’ surfaced on the ‘nets (thanks GVSB!).

And whilst were touching on Johnny Jewel’s production skills partake in this Glass Candy instrumental which can only be described as a masterpiece. Not sure if Johnny is going to leave this as an instrumental or have Ida No do her thing, either way we’re creaming our jeans over this one.

Ssion: ‘Clowns’ remixes from Glass Candy, MOVES!! & Tactic / ‘Street Jizz’ & ‘A Wolves Eye’

ssion Ssion: Clowns remixes from Glass Candy, MOVES!! & Tactic / Street Jizz & A Wolves Eye

Kansas City, Missouri act Ssion (pronounced “shun”) have been one of the blogtown’s hottest commodity and it’s about time we got in the trade. The product is part new wave/no-wave, part indie rock, part synth-pop, part Italo-disco and throughly—delightfully—eccentric throughout. I remember someone calling it “sleaze-pop”, and that term in my mind.

We are fully indoctrinated into frontman Cody Critcheloe’s cult of personality. I came to Ssion through the tune ‘Street Jizz’, a upbeat ditty that’s probably about what you think it is. Join the cult.

Then came ‘Clowns’. Perhaps their most conventional pop-rock track they’ve produced thus far, ‘Clowns’ leaves a lot of room for remixing. The pairing with Portland’s Glass Candy has created something major. Already written up on StereoGum & BigStereo (among others), this remix is a playlist mainstay and major favorite.

The ‘Clowns’ single drops February 12th on Sleazetone showcasing the Glass Candy remix, as well as mixes by Philly’s MOVES!! and a pair from Chicago boys Chrissy Murderbot & DJ C. Sadly one of my favorite remixes of the tune didn’t make the cut. It comes from fellow KC resident Tactic.

Ssion’s sophmore album ‘Fool’s Gold’ found it’s way into our inbox last week and it’s extremely solid and more mature and polished than from their previous record, 2003’s ‘Opportunity Bless My Soul’ (see Discogs). ‘Fool’s Gold’ shares the February 12th release date with the single. The album cut that’s appealing to me and my vote for single #2 is ‘A Wolves Eye’. My current dancing in the bedroom anthem.

Chromatics – IV

chromatics Chromatics IV

Johnny Jewel, Adam Miller and Ruth Radelet collectively known as Chromatics released their fourth full length album this month, appropriately titled ‘IV’. The band has under gone many changes since their inception in 2002, but the current lo-fi electronic manifestation is by far our favorite. Johnny Jewel of Glass Candy never ceases to amaze us with his superb production skills and Ruth’s tender voice wafts beautifully over the score.

Glass Candy – Geto Boys (Demo)

glass candy Glass Candy Geto Boys (Demo)

From no-wave rock beginnings to the italo disco sensation that they are today, Glass Candy never ceased to astonish with every release. I’m convinced that Johnny Jewel, the man behind the Glass Candy sound is a genius and Ida No, the woman behind that dreamy voice is an angel.

The duo has been know to close out their live sets by singing one of their songs on top of the Geto Boys‘ ‘Mind Playing Tricks On Me’ beat. Last month they unveiled a new demo track on their myspace titled ‘Geto Boys’ which is Ida covering Cyndi Lauper’s ‘Iko Iko’ on top of the Geto Boys beat. The two songs go together amazingly well.

Glass Candy: 5/17/07 @ The Knockout

Ida No & Johnny Jewel took the stage at the Knockout this Thursday & played to a packed house of fans. Ida’s haunting vocals were backed by Johnny’s masterful fingers on his Korg MS 2000 and a trusty drum machine. For lack of a better description & due to this massive hangover I’m nursing I’m going to take the easy way out and say the show was nothing short of super duper amazing!

Here’s some pics of the show which can describe a million times better than my 6th grade level vernacular can.

Glass Candy – I Always Say Yes

Glass Candy

Portland’s finest No Wave sexpots Glass Candy go Italo Disco on our asses, but that’s OK, because they do it so well. The title track, ‘I Always Say Yes’, is a dreamy disco cut- I imagine being at a sleazy club, fading and gazing into the DJ lights after sniffing lines and lines of grade-A cocaine with hookers. On the B-Side is ‘The Chameleon’, less dreamy and much darker than it’s counter part. There’s an instrumental and an a cappella, and the a capella is not really an a cappella- more like a really detached, stripped down version of the track.

This is hot shit.

And if you’re not in the know, Glass Candy is playing tonight at Club Donuts. If you got five dollars & a bike I expect to see your ass there. I’ll be one of the dudes crammed in the front of the stage drooling profusely.
