L.A.’s Guns’N'Bombs are wise old record collectors. You probably know they crank out the finest gentleman’s techno, but did you know that they do the disco? The folks at Echo Park Records gave us this mix last week and it’s been the rotation for summer ever since.

Out of the retro mode here’s some more good stuff in the form of a remix of Guns’N'Bombs Kitsune debut, ‘Nothing is Getting Us Anywhere’ from more of L.A.’s best, Acid Girls.

Can’t neglect these Guns’N'Bombs remixes, an eclectic array of mixes for my hip-hop uncle (I wish), Wu-Tang’s Ghostface Killah, iconic goth-rock band, The Cult and poppy Junior Senior (of which the ‘Bombs Turbotito was a member). All recommended:

Oh shit! Guns’N'Bombs tours exotic locals such as Tapei, Bangkok, Portland, Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco to name a few. Full dates and details on Guns’n'Bombs MySpace tour page.

And know that the new single drops, September 16th; the label is tentative. Here’s a taster’s spoon of the new heat; check YouTube.

Sisters of Mercy get remixed as Sisters of Mixing / CYLAB ‘Grays (Graced by Shok & Zeitmahl remix)’

sistersofmixing Sisters of Mercy get remixed as Sisters of Mixing / CYLAB Grays (Graced by Shok & Zeitmahl remix)

L.A. based producer/instrumentalist Shok (a.k.a. Zeitmahl), is one bad dude. You mightn’t have guessed it, but we’re all about sinister dark industrial gothtronix shit. And Shok provides!

Formerly in the seminal industrial/techno rock band My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult, as well as recording with International DeeJay Gigalos artist Mount Sims (who helped usher in the modern sexy-electro sound with ’02s ‘Ultra Sex’), Shok has quite a bit of impressive production and rockstar credentials.

Now, gothic icons The Sisters of Mercy have a canon of songs that are perfect as they exist, but their sparse soundscapes have always made me wonder how they’d sound with a tricked-out backbeat. Enter, Shok, who took The Sisters’ classic ‘Lucretia, My Reflection’ and mixes it down for the dancefloor—re-christened ‘New Cretia’ under the yet another moniker of Shok, Sisters of Mixing:

Another recent remix of Seattle/NYC EMB/Electro band CYLAB also gets a lot of play at my house. Some shit you can dance and cry to at the same time.

Shok is currently working with heavyweight Bristol drum’n'bass’r Tech Itch on a the colab. project found here. We expect good things.

Miss Kittin to release ‘BatBox’ LP / ‘Kittin is High’ remixes from Black Labelle & JoJo De Freq / The Hacker, Golden Boy & Felix Da Housecat/Staitc Revenger favorites

Parisian electronic music diva, Miss Kittin, will release her second solo record titled ‘BatBox’ on the Nobody’s Bizzness label early this year. This anticipated record follows her 2004 solo debut, ‘I COM’.

Miss Kittin has always had a gothic touch and ‘Batbox’ might be the darkest record yet, but the record still has a surprising undercurrent of optimism. The artist explains ‘Batbox’ like this:

BatBox is a redemption. Let the bats in my head fly out. I was saying goodbye to old ghosts, allowing light to reduce the shadows and fight the dark. It was like opening a window on new perceptions, not with my eyes but through intuition, just like bats and cats do.

‘BatBox’ has quickly become one of my favorite records for the new year and I don’t see it leaving rotation any time soon. Standout tracks include the first single, ‘Kittin is High’ which also carries a 1-2 punch of fantastic B-Sides by Norwegian remixer Black Labelle and East London doll JoJo De Freq. I’ve also found the tune, ‘Barefoot Tonight’ utterly infectious.

Of course before, inbetween and always, Miss Kittin has recorded alongside verious partner including The Hacker, Golden Boy, and Felix Da Housecat, as well as releasing several DJ mixes albums—many of which you can familiarize yourself with at Amazon.

The aforementioned collaborations have resulted in some of my very favorite records. Here’s the cream to fall in love with, if you haven’t already had the pleasure:

MP3: Miss Kittin and The Hacker - Frank Sinatra

MP3: Felix Da Housecat - Silver Screen Shower Scene (feat. Miss Kittin) (Static Revenger Mix)

The Felix Da Housecat track above was just right—but I hit you with the remix that makes things just a little crazier—it comes from one of Felix’s peers, North Hollywood’s disco house veteran Static Revenger. That track resides on the ‘Madame Hollywood / Shower Scene’ remix EP alongside remixes from Adult., Ladytron, Jacques Lu Cont and others. It came out in 2002 and it’s OOP (out of print) but worth seeking out (just like the rest of the lot above, wink wink).

And, guess what, even more Miss Kittin in the archives.

New Wave Tuesday: Blitz - Second Empire Justice

Blitz - Second Empire Justice

Greetings. This is my first post, and I thought I’d start things off with one of my favorite hidden gems. Some of you may recognize the band Blitz as one of the most well known old school Oi/Punk bands. However not many people know that in 1983 they had a bit of a personnel split, with half of the band continuing on in the bland Punk style, while the other half released this beautiful monster of a Post-Punk album.

Second Empire Justice is what happens when a good melodic Punk band finally gets time in a real studio, with a real producer (Chris Nagle who earlier assisted the legendary Martin Hannet on a number of Joy Division and New Order albums).

I could go on and on about this album, but instead I’ll let you take a listen and decide for yourselves. This was one of the singles from this LP, and it is also one of my favorite Post-Punk songs ever recorded.

MP3: Blitz - Solar

Here’s a couple more as well.

MP3: Blitz - Flowers and Fire

MP3: Blitz - Underground

There isn’t a whole lot of info on this album out on the net, but you can still pick up a copy of the album through Amazon, and Cherry Red Records.

New Wave Tuesday: Siouxsie & The Banshees

siouxsie New Wave Tuesday: Siouxsie & The Banshees

Because of their latter works, many will say that Soiuxsie & The Banshees were most certainly new wave. But a band with a career that spans 20 years is allowed to try on many different hats & though one of the hats Siouxsie & the Banshees donned was decidedly more dark (i.e. goth) their roots were bathed in the post punk/new wave scene of the late 70’s.

Previously named ‘The Bromley Contingent’ the band’s line up consisted of Siouxsie, Steven Severin, Marco Pirroni (later of Adam & The Ants) & John Simon Ritchie (later known as Sid Vicious). Further down the road the band was joined by Robert Smith & Budgie of the Slits who Siouxsie later married & formed The Creatures with.

Along with Bauhaus, The Cure & Joy Division, Siouxsie & the Banshees were one of the most important & influential bands of that era. The Banshees disbanded in 1996 however Siouxsie and Budgie still make music as The Creatures (last album 2004). In 2006 Siouxsie signed a contract with Universal to produce a solo album.
