Dizzee Rascal: ‘Sirens’ remixes from Acid Girls & El-P

dizzeerascal Dizzee Rascal: Sirens remixes from Acid Girls & El P

Londoner and rap champion, Dizzee Rascal has a Mercury Music Prize collecting dust, garnered after his 2003 debut ‘Boy in da Corner’ got international attention for its clever blend of UK garage beats and hip hop grime vocals (at the just 19 years of age). But since then it’s been a bit quiet—at least in the US—Dizzee’s 2004′ follow-up ‘Showtime’ and 2007’s ‘Maths+English’ placed on the UK charts at #7 & #8, respectively, but the states never saw a proper release from the Dizzee boy. Until now—enter heroic hip-hop label Definitive Jux to pump some new life into the latest ‘Maths+English’, which is given a deserved US release slated for April 29th.

To get you all excited, we have a small handful of remixes by bloggers-gone-big-league, Acid Girls (whom a little bird told me have completed their first original production with Frankmusik vocals and it’s bananas!) and Def Jux ringleader El-P.

Old Rap Wednesdays: RIP Pimp C of UGK (Under Ground Kingz)

pimpc Old Rap Wednesdays: RIP Pimp C of UGK (Under Ground Kingz)

Pimp C, or Chad Butler—one half of the classic Texas rap duo UGK, died at the age of 33 in his Mondrian Hotel room in Hollywood this morning. Just three days after what was to be his final show with Too $hort at the House of Blues. The pair were also at work on an album together.

Pimp C and his long standing partner and friend Bun B formed UGK made their first major noise with ‘Something Good’, on Jive Records (back when it was still a legitimate rap label).

MP3: UGK – Something Good (1992)

UGK has been a staple of Hip Hop since, but with Pimp C’s untimely death this morning, UGK has ostensibly come to its end. But looking back to better days, my favorite UGK track is the ‘93 single ‘Pocket Full of Stones’, which is heard on the Menace II Society soundtrack. Pimp C was the producer of many UGK tracks including ‘Pocket Full of Stones’, and produced several additional remixes, including this very appropriate one that, tonight, sounds like a eulogy:

MP3: UGK – Pocket Full of Stones (Pimp C Remix) (1993)

Pimp C is most known for his appearances on Jay-Z’s 2000 single ‘Big Pimpin” and Three 6 Mafia’s 2000 single ‘Sippin’ On Da Syrup’ (aka ‘Sizzurp’). But, Pimp C has collaborated with many artists, most interestingly, UGK collaborated with UK Grime’s highest superstar Dizzee Rascal on his most recent ‘Maths + English’ album. UGK sounds at home on the track:

I grew up a hip hop head and on a steam of UGK on cassette tapes. Free Pimp C… Pimp C is now free.

If you’re a Hip Hop fan, get your library right with the ‘Best of’ UGK album that came out a while back. It’s solid and it’s on Amazon.

A-Trak – MIA-Roder (Kavinsky vs MIA) + Kavinsky – 1986

a trak A Trak MIA Roder (Kavinsky vs MIA) + Kavinsky 1986

Kanye West’s dj A-Trak slaps together the creamy beats of Kavinsky with the sweet vocals of MIA like an audio peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

We posted the bootleg version of this cut back in May. It was a lowly 96kbps, which is such a cocktease bitrate. Sounds good on the pc speakers but try playing that shit on a club system and risk getting disowned by your mom. A-Trak used the real deal Holyfield track on his Dirty South Dance mixtape.

We also go the original Kavinsky track that A-Trak used in case you want to try a mush up of your own. It’s the unreleased ‘1986′.

M.I.A.: ‘Boyz’ Kimono Kops Remix & ‘URAQT’ LuvTek Remix

mia M.I.A.: Boyz Kimono Kops Remix & URAQT LuvTek Remix

OMG, so the new M.I.A. record, ‘Kala’ will hit stores on August 21st and is available for pre-order now. It’s produced by Switch and makes dancey people lose their god damned minds.

I caught up with M.I.A. tonight for her first of two sold out L.A. dates. You can catch her tomorrow if you jostle a ticket on eBay or Craigslist (like I did tonight). After L.A. she moves on to Chicago, then Baltimore. There’s still dozens of dates around the world and you can see if she stops at your city on M.I.A.’s MySpace.

After connecting with Diplo on what came to be her first albums, ‘Piracy Funds Terrorism’ and ‘Arular’, she enlisted the other half of Hollertronix, Low Budget to be her ‘Kala’ tour DJ. M.I.A. is a smart cookie when it comes to choosing colaborators.

And interestingly, anyone buys her new CD single for ‘Boyz’, gets enhanced content including audio of ‘Boyz’ broken down into parts for D.I.Y. remixes. So get to it and send ‘em here (buy on Amazon)! Remixers and would-be remixers should check out our VST archive for some goodies.

First out of the gate with a really great ‘Boyz’ remix was German producer Kimono Cops who set the bar high:

MP3: M.I.A. – Boyz (Kimono Kops Mix)

But, my favorite new M.I.A. remix (of a 2005 track) right now comes from one of our favorite peoples, DJ LuvTek of Los Angeles, whom you might remember from his brilliantly mixed, ‘Do It at the Disco Mixtape‘ which we posted recently. Coincidentally, I checked out his weekly club, Genre for the first time tonight after the M.I.A. show and the shit was proper! Thurr were teenagers making out, gays giving each other hand jobs, stylish dudes, cute girls, drunk brawls and, of course, loud party music for loud party people. What more could you ask for? Seeing a dude get a glock 9mm put to his head while waking to your car afterward? Nope! Saw that too! Genre’s got it all! See wuz up every Monday night at Cinespace in Hollywood; Strictly for the 18+ set.

The tangent was for dramatic effect! Now, without mo’ adieu, hear the LuvTek remix of ‘URAQT’:
