My Cat Drinks Tap Water

mycatdrinkstapwater My Cat Drinks Tap Water

My Cat Drinks Tap Water are a noisy lot of young men from Queensland, Australia. They make hardcore-ish electronic-ish lo-fi music and, obviously, have an acute sense of subtle observational humor (my cat usually washes down his cheezburger with tap water too).

My Cat Drinks Tap Water, or MCDTW—for usability purposes—have captured a sound similar to FOALS, Fake Shark—Real Zombie and the late great Test-Icicles. I said to myself when I discovered this band, hey this sounds like such-and-such”. Only to discover that that’s the first three of their self-declared influences. Uncanny. Maybe a little semblance of The Blood Brothers to boot.

They’re low production value, but sometimes that just fits. This is a diamond in the rough, unearthed, I imagine, on a four-track in a garage, upside-down, in Australia. A diamond is a diamond, polished or dirty. Screaming, rapping, cowbells, distortion pedals, bleeps & bips—enjoy.

Hopefully, their cat drinks tap water like this, ’cause it’s amazing, like the band. They’re unsigned and recently released “The Burning Horse EP” themselves, which the tracks above are culled from. The band says they have shirts for sale, someday, maybe. Direct all questions to mcdtw@myspace.com.

Sweden’s Refused are something I get very excited about. It doesn’t matter that they broke up in 1998 and their ashes have since scattered into other groups including The (International) Noise Conspiracy. Refused is my long standing favorite hardcore punk band.

Many are familiar with the track ‘New Noise’ off Refused’s last album, ‘The Shape of Punk to Come: A Chimerical Bombation In 12 Bursts’ on Burning Heart Records (and later Epiptaph). That tune, amazing music video and containing album had acute electronic music sensibility and it lends itself very well to club rotation. I’ve heard Steve Aoki throw down ‘New Noise’ in his sets on numerous occasions—I always smile, then throw elbows and stomp feet. The build up at the beginning drops right into some of the fiercest screams ever. Play it loud or louder.

MP3: Refused – New Noise

Yow! Electro “bangers” and hardcore punk aren’t so far apart, really. The energy levels can be nearly identical.

I know RATM gets love in L.A.’s hippest dancefloors, particularly since the Late Night Laptop Re-Edit remix that Ed Banger’s SebastiAn did.

Now San Diego’s Shark Attack have put an electro twist on ‘New Noise’. I think a re-edit of this track is long overdue and I’m excited to see someone has stepped up to the challenge. The main sample sounds a bit clipped, but who cares, it’s Refused! The novelty rules! Some of y’all might like it and others might think it’s the highest blasphemy. I’d like to see other edits and uses of this track someday.

And for good measure, here’s a another original, ‘Refused are Fucking Dead’ along with a remix that appeared on their 1998 ‘Theology E.P.’:

And on a final note—something different—hear this hip-hop from Montreal’s Hensforth that takes Stack House rapper C-Ride’s ‘P-P-Pushin’ and remixes it with ‘New Noise’ samples. Discobelle hipped us to this earlier this month. Again, the execution is a little rough, but I’m impressed with Hensforth for the move.

International Talk Like A Pirate Day

pirates day International Talk Like A Pirate Day

Today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day and people are really getting into it at work. As awesome as pirates were back in the day, middle aged men and women in business casual attire calling me ‘matey’ is not cool.

I just want to hide in my cube and avoid all the tongue in cheek ‘booty’ puns. I’m sure by the end of the day the blogoshpere is going to be littered with pirates themed songs. I wasn’t going to contribute to the unholy lot, however, I’ve been dying for an excuse to post these tracks.

If you’d like to hear more from these bands add them on myspace; a place for pirates. 3 inches of Blood. The Blood Brothers. Enjoy the rest of International Talk Like A Pirate day. I hope ye all get scurvy.

Trash Fashion – Mommy & Daddy (Jet Storm’s Ear Cleaner Mix)

Trash Fashion – Mommy & Daddy

Trash Fashion is at it again. Jet Storm of Trash Fashion did a remix of their ‘Mommy & Daddy’ track and it’s so ruff, so smooth. Remember the Rhythm Dr. version we tossed up here a while back? Well, once this new one gets into it, it’s like that version on 3 Red Bull and vodkas and 6 bumps of coke. Thank Trash Fashion for having the insight to combine hardcore punk vocals and day-glo raver aesthetics and make it palatable for the pointy-shoe’d scenester lot.

The video you see above is the the original track, which is hype to begin with. Directed by YouthClub!.

If you want to be down with Trash Fashion you don’t want to wear plastic bags for a t-shirts and wash your hair with old newspapers and banana peels—nah! You want to holler at TF on MySpace or hit up the official Trash-Fashion.com to purchase the new ‘Mommy & Daddy EP’ and see their slew of European tour dates.

Perhaps you could be Trash Fashion-ish in some Jeremy Scott (or Jeremy for Ksubi), some Alex + Chloe and some glittery high-tops, interestingly more expensive than trash, by a lot.

P.S. It’s Thursday, and we told you what that means, the new Bangers & Cash track is out on Spank Rock’s MySpace. It’s called ‘B.O.O.T.A.Y.’ and features Santogold and Betty Black (rapping!). Need we say more?
