Warp Records Can’t Be Stopped

warp Warp Records Cant Be Stopped

With amazing new releases coming from a diverse array of genres and acts such as Grizzly Bear, Flying Lotus, Autechre, & more, Warp Records remains at the forefront of forward-thinking music labels, that’s why we here at Missingtoof love what they do and the music they put out.

Two recent releases come from Leila & Chris Clark (Clark).

Leila, former touring keyboardist for Björk, has had previous releases on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label. ‘Blood, Looms & Blooms’ is her Warp Records album debut, which features many guest vocalists, including former Tricky vocalist Martina Topley-Bird.

Here’s a cut off of ”Blood, Looms & Blooms’ entitled ‘Mettle’; a heavy experimental downtempo track that creeps up on you like a bad trip..

Clark, since the early 2000’s, has been holding it down for the ‘experimental electronic/IDM’ scene. With his complex beat patterns and beautiful melodies, Clark sits well alongside his Warp labelmates like Plaid, Richard Devine, & Mira Calix.

Here, Clark gets 4 on the floor with this ‘intelligent’ dance music thumper, ‘For Wolves Crew’, off his latest album, ‘Turning Dragon’..

Gescom: A1-D1

gescom2 Gescom: A1-D1

Having released music from the likes of Boards of Canada, Autechre, Bola, Mr. 76ix, & Jega, Skam Records is at the very forefront of the leftfield/experimental electronic music scene.

In the past, no one was really sure who was involved with the Gescom music project- some expected it was perhaps a mixture of ‘IDM’ staples Autechre, Aphex Twin, and others. To this day, I’m not sure if anyone really knows who is in the current Gescom lineup, though it seems that, along with Russell Haswell, Gescom is indeed Autechre related.

The only certainty I have of Gescom is that, whoever is involved, ‘they’ make very interesting electronic music. Gescom usually dabble with electro, acid, and hip-hop beats and then destroy shit via rhythmic skips & glitches. Their sound is like a malfunctioning music software program gone wrong. I love it.

‘A1-D1′ is a collection of six tracks taken from 2 vinyl EP’s Gescom released prior to the CD. Here are two of them.

Modeselektor- Boogybytes Vol. 3

modeselektor Modeselektor- Boogybytes Vol. 3

I don’t know which came first- shitty rave music or the drugs… I wonder if it was just these non-music fuck heads who are, you know, sitting in their house one day and they dicked around on their Macintosh and they go ‘bloop bleep bleep bloop’…

That there [courtesy of Panacea] is the intro to Modeselektor’s first official DJ mix for Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label, preceding volumes mixed by Kiki and Sascha Funke, respectively. What makes this mix so special is the fact it’s not filled with the hottest ‘bangers’ of the moment — it’s compiled of personal selections that Modeselektor love.

This is a well-rounded mix that morphs and mixes cohesively from one track to the next, blending all forms of ‘electronica’ and showing Modeselektor’s digital trickery and expertise along the way.

MP3: James Holden - Idiot

MP3: Flying Lotus - 1983

And you know we couldn’t let a Modeselektor post go by without throwing in this gem which feature Radiohead’s Thom Yorke on vocals.

You can purchase Boogybytes Vol. 3 from here Modeselektor- Boogybytes Vol. 3 and don’t forget to check out other Modeselektor albums. Tour dates, streamable tracks available on their myspace.

Twerk

Basura was named one of URB’s top 10 dj’s to watch out for in 2001 for his series of IDM mixes tapes which he put out a gaggle of back in the day. But Basura ain’t the only Toofer who knows a thing or three about IDM. I also used to spend the majority of my spare time lurking in the experimental/IDM section of music stores & ran across a few diamonds.

twerk Twerk

One of my long time faves has to be SF based producer/artist Twerk who not only creates dreamy/creamy landscapes with his music, he also creates software which can help you to procreate your own tunes. A lot of the sounds he uses are gathered using a DAT whilst traveling around the city & later manipulated using custom built equipment & software.

MP3: Twerk - From Brown To Green

Visit AudilbleOddities, his mastering house to get your shit straight hooked up, and click on the the ‘Twerk’ tab to see his discography & the software I was telling you about. You can re-up on a few of his albums on Amazon Twerk.

Tycho- Past is Prologue

Past Is Prologu title="Tycho Past is Prologue" />

I met Tycho back in 2002 when I was more of an ‘IDM’/electronic dj. His music is as lush and as head noddy as it gets. Think Boards of Canada and Four Tet, and you kinda get the picture. This limited edition colored vinyl, which is a sampler of his album of the same name, is out on Merck records, a label he and I both loved and respected then, and now look, they’re releasing his shit!

The opening track, ‘From Home’ is my pick of the bunch. It starts with a synthy build up that makes me feel like I’m floating in the air being smothered with soft fluffy clouds, then a steady hip hop beat connects everything together, and you end out feeling like everything in the world is all right. I need to start smoking the buds again.

Funkstorung

funkstorung Funkstorung

I was doing some spring cleaning the other day & ended up digging through the crates (a.k.a. a box of loose cd’s that I keep in the closet) and stumbled upon Funkstorung’s ‘Additional Productions’ from 1999. Funksturong was a duo of producers sometimes described as the ‘German Autechre’ & were among the upper echelon of IDM acts.

Missingtoof reader Trouc brought up the remix of Wu-tang’s ‘Reunited’ in the Bird Peterson - ‘Ain’t Nothin’ to Fuck with‘ post comments & I’ve had a hankering to re-hear the song ever since. Was finally able to satisfy my musical thirst. The Bjork remix is a beautiful glitched up piece of audio imagery.

Partake.

MP3: Bjork - All Is Full Of Love (In Love With Funkstörung Remix)

Funksturong broke up in 2006 due to musical, personal & practical differences. The whole ‘Additional Productions’ cd is filled with other outstanding remixes. Their final CD ‘Appendix’ is a must have as well. You know where to go Funkstorung.
