Ian Brown: ‘Just Like You (The Prodigy Remix) plus hella old UNKLE colabos

Now, one of ‘Toof’s favorite things is seeing two seemingly different favorite things commingling & fraternizing into one super-favorite thing. I’m speaking about favorite thing Ian Brown, vocalist of seminal English band The Stone Roses (‘87-’95) and favorite thing, The Prodigy, gods of industrial techno (with broadening horizons). The two got together on Ian Brown’s newest single, ‘Just Like You’ and went half on a music love-child.

The original version of ‘Just Like You’ was lifted for ADIDAS advertising campaigns and appeared on this year’s Japanese promotional compilation for sneakerhead’s ‘One By One: kzk soundtrack from Adidas Originals by Originals’ (these) as well as on the ever fashionable Ian Brown’s sixth solo album ‘My Way’ (yep, Ian Brown is the ‘09 Ol’ Blue Eyes). Here’s one from ‘My Way’, unaltered; An anthem for the working class of Madchester:

More favorites culled from the years, including several from frequent collaborators (once upon a time), UNKLE. Tracks are pulled from coveted old favorites, including several Toy’s Factory/Mo’ Wax imprint Japanese releases for UNKLE’s 1999 ‘Be There’ single (providing the ‘Be There’ mixes), Mo’ Wax’s year-2000 compilation, ‘Art of War: Who Dares Win’ (providing the ‘Monkeys Were Dolphins’ remix), and UNKLE’s 2006 4 -disc boxset ‘Self Defense’ which features 15 mixes of ‘Reign’, including mixes from Evil 9 & RJD2—a song that originally appeared on UNKLE’s epic debut ‘Psyence Fiction’ (back when UNKLE was James Lavelle and DJ Shadow)—none can touch the original, IMO, but I’ll assume you heard the original; Remixes “for the heads”. Lastly a pinch of remixes nabbed from Ian Brown’s 2002 remix only album, ‘Remixes Of The Spheres’ (‘cuz I know you internets love remixes heavy posts!), on Polydor, which reps yet another UNKLE mix for Ian Brown’s 2002 single ‘F.E.A.R.’ and mixes from London’s The Freelance Hellraiser and Cedarblue.

As for Stone Roses favorites, that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms. If you like what you hear, I ask that you take on the Stone Roses as a homework assignment. Amazon.com has all the goods, from one concise “best of” release to the luxurious discography boxset.

Of course, Amazon also as all the Ian Brown brown releases covered. For the exclusive gems, GEMM is always a good bet.

Ian Brown will be touring Europe in 2010, and dates are posted on his site’s tour page (I hope he comes to L.A. too). Also, Ian is contending for Shockwave’s NME’s Awards 2010, so give the man a vote!

Dan Sena: ‘Panther’ plus remixes of Scanners & Yeah Yeah Yeahs

O.C.’s Dan Sena, former hardcore vocalist in Bullet Train to Vegas, Dim Mak alumni and lynch-pin in the Orange County dance music scene with Busywork (which, was run and residented alongside our buddy and featured artist, Clifford Lidell—formerly CASIO), has something for you to hear under a discoball.

We’ve got a couple fresh Dan Sena tracks. The first and original ditty with a disco-house vibe and some electro-house “oomph” titled ‘Panther’ that makes a brother just wanna move. Uncleared samples for some unclean dancing(!), just as the music gods—in all their purple crushed velvet glory—have intended.

Next up, a remix for Dim Mak’s Scanners which was released as a single December 8th with this Dan Sena remix alongside mixes by Tittsworth, Don Diablo and Dirty Disco Youth. The Scanners always remind me of the David Cronenberg’s 1981 flick of the same name (IMDb). There’s a scene in it that resembles what listening to these Dan Sena tunes looks like and it goes like this.

One more for good measure, because Yeah Yeah Yeah’s ‘Heads Will Roll’ is, like, song of the year, and this is a pretty good mixdown.

Dan Sena’s upcoming EP, ‘AYEMGEE’, will be out in 2010. Eyes peeled. ‘Panther’ is likely to prowl it’s way on it.

Also, keep ‘em peeled for a party Missingtoof is supporting with Dan Sena and our UK homie Sharooz in January at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa, O.C. Keep lurking for details.

You Say Party! We Say Die!: ‘There Is XXXX (Within My Heart)’

I love to put on my dance-punk outfit You Say Party! We Say Die!. It’s a five-piece Canadian outfit (Abbotsford, BC, specifically ) & oh so fashionable.

You Say Party! We Say Die!, or YSP! WSD! formed from a bicycle gang in ‘03. A motley crew forced to stay indoors in cold Canadian winters channeled their energy into instruments & a good thing was born. Two years later a proper LP, ‘Hit the Floor!’ was released. They got my attention by sheer clout of being opener for The Blood Brothers & Pretty Girls Make Graves that same year. ‘Hit the Floor’ begins with ‘[Overture]‘, ‘Cold Hands Hot Bodies’: I was sold.

Their second studio album, 2007’s ‘Lose All Time’ & 2008’s remix album ‘Remik’s Cube’ didn’t disappoint either—even featuring ‘Toof cultivated artist, RAC. Another favorite: An upbeat remix by S-2 with a classic drum’n'bass sensibility.

Now for the current: Their third studio album ‘XXXX’ was released under the care of producer Howard Redekopp (producer of Tegan and Sara & The New Pornographers) on Paper Bag Records last September ( I know that’s old news in the album-a-minute era, but hold up a minute!). The opening track is a sweet serenade that drops into a volumetric opus.

HURTS: Wonderful Life

Not too much I know about this band, but perhaps that’s part of the allure. They are HURTS and they hail from England. They are two and their sound is dark brooding synth-pop—one writer even called it “Doom Pop”, whatever the label, this tune speaks to me.

Hearsay is HURTS got their video dancer from a want ad in the paper. I imagine it read something like this: “Doom pop band seeks classic beauty with deep inner-sorrow to dance outwardly while silently dying inside. We, the band, will play stoically in Savile Row tailoring. Compensation: Being a part of the next big thing.”

About that last part, more hearsay is they’re signed to a major label. I’m not surprised, this one song is enough to prove their case.

Flairs: Trucker’s Delight

Flairs, or Lionel Flairs, is one of my favorite type of geezers—talented & good humored. He reps the Staines & Soho London ‘hoods as well as neighboring dance music epicenter gay Paris (he’s a born Frenchman). He makes smooth indie-dance tunes that delight the blog world (Ohh Crapp & 20Jazzfunkgreats a.k.a. your favorite blog’s favorite blog) & find their way onto mixes of tastemaking DJs like Soulwax, who championed Flairs, dropped the little ditty ‘Trucker’s Delight’ into their Essential Mix for Pete Tong’s BBC Radio1 program just after its release last year (See the tracklisting and grab the mix), and also on last Decembers end-of-year Mixmag compilation (Aptly titled ‘Part of NYE Never Dies’).

Boom; a year later. Our buddy TADT linked us to the cute little video you see above, just moments after French label Third Side plopped it on their YouTube channel (good things travel fast). Now about 24 hours later, we’ve watched it what probably totals 24 times, and total views are surely the better part of a 100k. If you watch, you’ll know why: Sprite tits, stellar colonic flight and 18-wheelers! Trucker’s delight indeed! It’s the inspired work of Jérémie Perin under the wing of design agency Premiere Heure. This even surpasses Flairs last video, ‘Better Than Prince’, which enlisted the creative help of Jonas & Francios to produce a unique animation of whole ‘nother variety (watch ‘Better Than Prince’ on YouTube).

Flairs released a promotional ‘Better Than Price’ in 2008 with ‘Trucker’s Delight’ as the B-side. A winning pair.

Additionally, some good remix have come from singles of tunes culled from his recent LP effort ‘Sweat Symphony’ (pun intended). Mixed down by Alex Gopher, who is also a the remix producer of the mix below (Flairs has recently remixed Gopher’s ‘The Game’ in trade). More solid remixes of singles include work from: Benjamin Theves, Patrick Alavi / roXour, Bitchee YaYaYa, WZRDS, Be-Noizy, 25 Hours A Day; And these, from Lithuania electro badman Metal on Metal & Ontario’s disco-funksters Alixander III.

Tigersapien with remixes by Kolt13 & Designer Drugs

Four man, Philly meets N.Y.C. crew, Tigersapien, have a sexy sleazy tune in ‘God Knows’. The sacrilege is awesome, and so is the supreme remix production of Parisian producer Kolt13. Tigersapien’s vocals are admittedly on the emo-pop tip with a hint of whine (in the best of ways, like, say, The Faint), but I love the cockiness of it all, and I’ll tell you what, my lady friends do too! Their crossover appeal is high and the “band to watch” label is already being thrown around the blogosphere quite a bit. Enjoy this dirty love song about the truths of “hookin’ up”. This one is for you boo.

The originals above are just a pinch of hottness taken from their EP released in January. The EP is for sale on iTunes and well worth yr duckets. And, I do believe these boys have a winning gimmick, wearing fuzzy tiger heads for press shots. I hope they sound as good live and keep the tiger head and champagne pourin’ on tits image rollin’ along.

Before we go, let’s bring the focus back to producer Kolt13, who’s intricate production values are producing some extraordinary things for not only Tigersapien, but others, including this rework of up and coming hip-hop super-producers, Ohio’s The Kickdrums.

The Long Blondes – Nostalgia (Glass Candy remix) + Glass Candy – Animal Imagination (Instrumental)

the long blondes The Long Blondes Nostalgia (Glass Candy remix) + Glass Candy Animal Imagination (Instrumental)

U.K. Quintet The Long Blondes recently called it quits in late 2008 mainly due to lead guitarist Dorian Cox having a stroke. Since their inception in 2003 the band released two full length albums and one collection of their singles released on Rough Trade appropriately named “Singles”. Their last album Couples was produced by production genius Erol Alkan.

Portland’s ever genre-changing sensations Glass Candy have remixed one of the stand out tracks on The Long Blondes final album. Nostalgia is a proper title for a song to listen to whilst we reflect on The Long Blondes awesome existence.

You’ll recognize where bits and pieces of this remix came from if you’ve heard the early instrumental version of Glass Candy’s Animal Imagination which sounds nothing like the version of the song that is currently sporting the same title on their MySpace. Name change, perhaps. If you haven’t heard it, please do:

Word on the street is that The Long Blondes former lead vocalist Kate Jackson has a solo album in the works. Scottish band 1990s also said Kate will guest spot on one the songs off their forth coming album ‘Kicks’, which is due out in March.

All of The Long Blondes albums are available for purchase on iTunes go them up if you haven’t and reminisce with us.

The sister half of Sweden’s brother/sister duo The Knife Karin Dreijer ventures out on her own in a haunting new project called Fever Ray. Fever Ray has found a home on Mute Records whom will be releasing the self titled full length March Twenty-Fourth. If we learned anything from The Knife its that Karin likes her music like I like my women; dark and brooding and disorienting as all get out. The album is a dish best served with a bottle of cheap wine and repressed memories.

Ogle this video from one of the many stand out tracks on the album, ‘If I Had A Heart’.
