ATL come L.A. DJ/Producer Le Castle Vania has earned a reputation for whipping crowds into a frenzy, no doubt aided by this staple of his sets, the hard-as-fucking-nails electro track, ‘Zero Machine’ that samples (or remixes, if you prefer) the alternative gods, The Smashing Pumpkins, classic, ‘Zero’. If last year was all about Mr. Oizo’s RATM remix (or was it, Patrick Alavi’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ (here) remix instead?), this year is all about:

MP3: Le Castle Vania – Zero Machine
Removed by request

Also new in the Le Castle Vania repository is this collaboration with Birmingham (but soon to be L.A.) party monster, Computer Club. Computer Club shot this over to us before his recent string of L.A. dates, including Nocuturnal Wonderland (where he straight murdered it). Nod to event coordinators like Insomniac who have, in the last year, let this indie-electro-blog-house thing get a massive stage of their own and fill it with global players. It’s fun to be along for the ride as a genre goes from fledgling to full-fledged—But I digress… Here’s Le Castle Vania & Computer Club:

MP3: Le Castle Vania & Computer Club – The Messiah

MP3: Le Castle Vania & Computer Club – The Messiah (Radio Edit)

Yo, so why’s it called ‘The Messiah’ (Besides the potentially obvious, it being a straight-up cover of Renegade Hardware junglist, Konflict’s 2000 track, ‘Messiah’), here’s one you might not know, from way back to 2003, when Le Castle Vania was Messiah-1, drum’n'bass producer and operator of his own short-lived label Negaverse Recordings. The release is a tune is ‘Relic’ which got a properly massive remix by L.A.’s Gridlok and the original ‘Red Dust’. Strictly jungle (the crazy bass drops are all about half-way in):

MP3: Messiah 1 – Relic (Gridlok Remix)

MP3: Messiah 1 – Red Dust

Boh! If you love it, know that we love it too. If you don’t, go kick rocks. Or, maybe give this other contemporary Le Castle Vania a try, as remixed by L.A.’s top-shelf’s LA Riots:

Also true! The tune pretty much is a remix of the old Renegade Hardware track 'Messiah' by Konflict. See, it's either laziness or strategy, but we leave gaps in the story for some crowd participation. hah. Thanks for helping!

I just wanted an excuse to post some old-ass Le Castle Vania ish that a lot of peeps don't know about. And it happens to be called Messiah-1 too. Maybe that's part of the inspiration? Paying homage to the former moniker?

I know Noisia & Spor also have have recent remixes of 'Messiah' too. Noisia is my hero. Spor too. Spor just got done touring Austrialia with Ewun (a.k.a. Kill The Noise). Speaking of which (on this loosly associated train of though), I'm going to a rave with Kill The Noise later tonight. I'm not talking you out of your opinion about 'electro blog kids' but you've absolutely picked the wrong track to make an example.

The 'Messiah' remix is a cover (recreated everything) created in part by Computer Club a.k.a. Gigantor of the world famous drum'n'bass group Evol Intent. I'm sure you're heard of them? Arguably the most prolific junglists in the US.

Riding on the coattails of the last post, where we shared a remix from British producer Photek of electronic-punkers The Faint, I’d like to share another from the crates—A dusty 1996 gem known as ‘Single (Photek Remix)’ for archetypal electronic-pop group Everything But The Girl. Lead singer Tracy Thorn (perhaps known to our readership as the voice on Massive Attack’s 1994 single ‘Protection’), gives a heartwrenching delivery perfect for Photek’s moody producion.

Photek gained fans for his work in under the drum & bass banner—but with arms outreached into other areas, creating a career with not only d&b accolades, but numerous accomplishments in house, ambient, electronica, and film scoring. An active remixer through the ’90s, I consider Photek’s remix for EBTG his best—I come back to this song every time I get my heart broke (or at least I would if it weren’t for my stone cold pimpin’).

MP3: Everything But The Girl – Single (Photek Remix)

Digging deeper, sample some other variety of Photek. Different flavours of drum & bass: Serving up the ambient side on ‘Ni Ten Ichi Pyo’ (Two Swords Technique)’, which found a wide circulation on MTV’s original AMP compilation. Serving up a rare 2004 techy d&B B-side, ‘Baltimore’. Even a year 2000 Billboard Dance Chart topping house track, ‘Mine To Give’:

MP3: Photek – Ni Ten Ichi Pyo (Two Swords Technique) (1997)

MP3: Photek – Baltimore (2004)

And just when you thought this post wouldn’t get all bloggy, we have a contemporary remix from Photek’s 2007 Drum & Bass album, ‘Form & Function Vol. 2′ from blogtown favorites, LA Riots—who, as drum & bass expatriates, make a logical and experienced pair to take on a Photek production for the official B-side.

Steve Aoki (a.k.a Kid Millionaire)—the founder of Dim Mak Records and co-founder of Hollywood’s premier indie/dance weekly, Cinespace (Tuesdays)—is known the world over as a int’l party rocker and so-called celebrity DJ. Today, Steve Aoki droped his debut mix album, ‘Pillowface and His Airplane Chronicles’ on Thrive Records.

And what did I tell you? Aoki starts his record off with Refused’s hardcore punk classic ‘New Noise’ and from there on it, it’s three thick layers deep of partytime. Layer one: take a club hit: Justice’s ‘Waters of Nazereth’. Layer two: find the most balls-out remix from one of the biggest names in dance music, Erol Alkan. Layer three: (now here’s the tricky part) enlist your hip and talented friends, say, Spank Rock affiliate Pase Rock to put a special verse in the mix.

Now do that over and over again. You’ve got a pretty unique and phenomenal mix. Here are some layered excerpts pulled from the mix:

MP3: Steve Aoki – Justice – Waters of Nazereth (Erol Alkans Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr Re-Edit) (with Pase Rock guest drop)

Not only are a lot of these tracks old and played out but adding a verse that doesnt even mesh and isnt mastered properly is just a poor excuse for a release. Aoki should stick to being a rich-kid hollywood socialite and continue getting drunk with 17 year old and leave the proper releases to the real artists. The only reason he tours like he does is because of his label and the fact that he has so much money, even so he agrees to his face on the side of a bus and to tour with hollywood actors gone djs? I dont think I could think of a greater way to insult the djing community and discredit yourself, ooh yeah maybe hang out with corey kennedy and let her take over your set when you are too wasted to finish. total wanker.

On January 24, 2008, bwahaha said:
I love DJs who Tour includes stops at local best buys

On January 24, 2008, baah said:
hahahah amazing. And that erol alkan remix is simply a drum edit for DJs, wouldn't exactly call it revolutionary or crazy or anything.

On January 25, 2008, bumpsdick said:
@ zach:

I copied nothing. The reason why you've read similar things on different sites is because we're listening to the same album and saying what's notable about it. Presumably, the layers like I mentioned.

I have nothing buy love for Steve Aoki. It's not a mix of dubplates, so what. It's not a technical marvel like a Mixmaster Mike or Mike Relm record. So what? ...I'm still listening to good mixes from 4 years ago. Spinning dubplayes is all politics. It's a fun mix. And Steve Aoki is a good dude. He's kept broke nobodies like me drunk and partying for free for years and years. There's nothing pretentious about that.

however, not even in motley crüe's cokebinge hayday did they release anything nearly as embarassing as the pillowface chronicles.

This EP / mixtape represents every parody, and every unfortunate moment that is making the LA electro scene an embarrassing watermark on the current music scene.

there is no amount of blow I could ever possibly do to excuse the mickey avalon "KIM" edit, nor even listen past the first verse without turning red in the cheeks and closing my laptop.

I am not the greatest producer in the world, but this shit makes us all cringe. seriously.

It's worse than sebastian bach's most self absorbed moment ever. His shitty purple lips were an accident. they were honest. This verse is worse than anything Uffie could ever dream of. Uffie is like ghetto boys compared to this shit.

Please. Steve Aoki. I beg you.

Stop.

I've never been to LA nor have any intention of going in the near future, and one major reason is that LA electro scene. It's just like fucking Hollywood: overprocessed and dumb. Don't get me wrong, some great shit has come from the west coast and some horrible shit is coming out of everywhere else, but I think this poor excuse for a compilation is the perfect example of everything that's wrong with it.

Steve Aoki is a kid who DJs because he can...and nothing annoys me more than that. If he had as much passion and drive to dig through crates and yard sales and blogs and underground magazines (like so many music geeks out there without the easy fucking means/money to become "famous"), he wouldn't have given us some debut album with these LA hipsters dropping dumb guest verses over songs that have been looped and recycled for years. Maybe he'd use his chintzy Cobrasnake fame and give a chance to some of the kids out there producing shit that's new and worthwhile, rather than an Erol Alkan remix of a Justice track we've all heard a hundred times over. The only saving grace in that I paid 18 damn bucks for this is that it happened when I was completely shitfaced at an awesome local record shop's closing party. The fact that those 18 dollars will go to toward's funding the owner's bank debt is the only thing that made the purchase even a little okay.

On February 14, 2008, UMHUM said:
(Giggling) With So Much Drama in tha LA-SCENE, It's Kinda hard bein Steve A-O-KEY...

I'm New to MISSINGTOOF, and maybe this has already been done on here, but why don't you guys have a mixtape contest. Then we can compare them to Aoki's mixtape. It shouldn't be that hard since so many people think what Aoki does is easy. Lets put our mixes where our mouths are people...show us these amazing underground bargain bined tracks you've got. LA Riots, once again! This time they’ve called mutiny on NYC indie-rockers, Jupiter One. The track is ‘Countdown’ and them LA Riot boys dance-up-the-beat for you to cut a rug to (or, perhaps, burn down a liquor store). This jammy will be a B-side to the forthcoming ‘Countdown’ single; released under Ryko.

LA Riots are (metaphorically speaking) burning L.A. down!

LA Riots is a recent formation of two well striped DJ/producers. One is Daniel LeDisko, who is known for his years of residencies at Hollywood’s 82, Moscow, and Le Disko. The other is Jo’B, who formerly DJ’d many-a jungle parties and raves under the name Orion and concurrently produces, the indie pop group Edison Gem.

With LA Riots, the sound is made for electro dance parties. Their stuttering vocal edits and four on the floor basslines are done with finesse and we all notice. Some of the right people certainly noticed the early unofficial remix of Justice with Uffie and recently have been busy doing commissioned remix work for EDM artists Ocelot, Hatiras, indie rock artists Scanners and Mystery Jets, d’n'b heavyweight Photek, pop superstars The Cure, and funky favorites Chromeo.

Nice resume for a band that is nearly fresh out of the gate, eh? Listen and learn:

And an original for good measure:

MP3: LA Riots – Kill Bill

LA and OC heads can check out LA Riots this weekend at a new little multi-genre dance music club in Santa Ana called Trust. I’m favoring this place because I dig that they play breakbeat, garage and other sub-genres in with the electro, because it can’t all be electro/ electro/ electro all the time.

SF heads can see LA Riots play with us at Blow Up on Aug. 31st.

Errybody else sit tight and LA Riots will slowly glaze themselves across the earth. Keep checking LA Riots on MySpace for tour dates.

Lastly, check LA Riots in our archive.
