Ed Banger Hollywood house party re-cap

edbanger Ed Banger Hollywood house party re-cap

Sooo, there was a little secret Ed Banger party in West Hollywood tonight at the infamous Viper Room, courtesy of Scion and Vice. In addition to Busy P, Kavinsky and SebastiAn, Justice decided to make an unannounced appearance, which is always nice. Thanks to Busy P for flying the boys in between their gig in Japan and their gig in Finland! With so much of the Ed Banger roster in the house they made it a fun rotation—DJing their signature sound with their tried and true CDJ setup.

Our boy C-Town also DJ’d the opening slot—just after conducting interviews with the Ed Banger gang. The transcription of that meeting is sure to show up in his little monthly rag called, Anthem Magazine. Just like his recent cover-story interview with Daft Punk that’s on news stands now in the current issue (with a Daft Punk photography spread shot by Hedi Slimane, which is breathtaking).

This right here is a music blog so let’s have some music! We love Edward Banger. We’re so friendly we call ‘em Ed. You like remixes, let’s do this! Tracks from Revl9n, Klaxons, Justin Timberlake & DJ Hell.

Kanye West joins Ed Bangers’ So-Me live in Hollywood

kanyesome Kanye West joins Ed Bangers So-Me live in HollywoodKanye West facing off with Ed Banger’s So-Me

Tonight Kanye West made a special appearance in the DJ booth, backing, of all people in the world, Ed BangersSo-Me! This went down at Them Jeans and Steve Aoki’s weekly club in Hollywood, Cinespace (Tuesdays).

This is funny only because of Kanye’s previous, and now infamous, tangle with So-Me, Ed Banger Records, and Justice at the last MTV European Music Awards (2006). As you might know, Kanye West had a small on-stage melt-down when he lost the ‘Best Video’ award to Justice vs. Simian’s ‘Never Be Alone’ (a.k.a. ‘We Are Your Friends‘) and discounted the awards’ “credibility” even when he had no idea who Justice, Simian or So-Me was! If you’re not familiar: view Kanye West’s nominated video, ‘Touch the Sky’ on YouTube, then Justice vs. Simian’s winning video, ‘We Are Your Friends’ on YouTube. Now, remember the antics that ensued at the MTV Eurpoe Music Awards as Kanye West calmly insulted So-Me (Ed Banger art director) at the award ceremony. See it (again?) on YouTube! (It really doesn’t get old!)

Stubborn as Kanye West is, I respect him for sucking it up and embracing ‘Electro’, ‘French Touch’, ‘Dance Music’, or whatever you’d like to call it (it has so many names); He probably realized that this music that we love is taking over the world and he ought to jump on board before the world notices he isn’t sitting on the cutting edge! Before supporting So-Me tonight, he made big news by sampling Daft Punk’s 2001 club hit, ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’. This track made his current single—what a nice way to save face and show he is now with us and not against us! We forgive you Kanye! You did a good job (and I wasn’t even going to touch it cause it’s been blogged to death, but now I have to):

MP3: Kanye West - Stronger (2007)

MP3: Daft Punk - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (2001)

…and I still don’t believe him at all when he says that his DJ, A-Trak didn’t totally hip him to what’s going on in the underground in the collaboration with Kid Sister on ‘Pro Nails’. But, whatev, in the end, all that counts is that dude is on the track and it’s bangin’! If you’re not up on what I’m saying, get learned in the Kid Sister archives where you can hear ‘Pro Nails feat. Kanye West’ and more.

…I can’t hate on the dude. Props for making Mike Myers feel so damned uncomfortable while simultaneously making a damn poignant (albeit stuttering) social commentary. WTF am I talking about again!? See it on YouTube!

…and ’cause I really do like Kanye, try this sort-of recent funny mixtape freestyle over Rich Boy’s, ‘Throw Some Ds’ from earlier this year. The original was talking about rims, but Kanye flipped it into a track about plastic tittiez:

P.S. Spoon played in the other room of the same venue and was the main attraction. They’re kind of a big deal—I love Spoon and they need some more blog love too—but soon! Come baaack.

DJ Paul V.: Yo Majesty vs. Depeche Mode vs. Bag Raiders vs. Dirty South

djpaulv DJ Paul V.: Yo Majesty vs. Depeche Mode vs. Bag Raiders vs. Dirty South

DJ Paul V. is kind of an authority on mash-ups. What makes him an authority? Perhaps because he does a little mash-up heavy program for (arguably the coolest radio station in the world) Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles. The show is The Smash Mix! airing every Friday afternoon at 5:30 and, alternatively, downloadable over the internet by visiting the site (as well as streamable from the Indie 103.1 Smash Mix page). Always something fun going on over there!

Paul V. sent us this mash-up which he is particularly proud of, and works very well. It’s a blend of Yo Majesty’s ‘Club Action’, as remixed by Bag Raiders (which also uses some of Enya’s ‘Orinoco Flow [Sail Away]‘) smashed with Depeche Mode’s ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ as remixed by Dirty South.

Sounds great, although I must admit when the Enya part finally drops it’s a little abrupt in contrast with all the, ‘fuck that shit, nigga!’. But we love abrupt, that’s why we like love ‘fuck that shit’ chorus in the first place!:

MP3: Yo Majesty vs. Depeche Mode - Just Can’t Get Club Action (DJ Paul V. Mix)

Before we move on, give a listen to the building blocks of the track above:

MP3: Yo Majesty - Club Action (Chris Bagraiders Sailing to Baltimore Edit)

MP3: Depeche Mode - Just Can’t Get Enough (Dirty South Remix)

Now, here’s another one of his most recent mashes, which takes Lil’ Mama’s ‘Lip Gloss’ and glazes it over the classic tune, ‘Tequila’ by The Champs (a listen will likely bring up fond memories of Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure):

MP3: Lil’ Mama vs. The Champs - Tequila Lip Gloss (DJ Paul V. Mix)

DJ Paul V. also does the Neon Noise radio show on Indie 103.1 every Saturday night (midnight-3am); It’s a mix of all sorts of tracks you’d probably love, check program’s page on Indie’s site here and know that you can stream the show live from the website!

Paul V. doesn’t quit there, he is also a regular at the monthly mash-up party, Bootie LA, as well as the resident DJ of L.A.’s longest-running underground dance club, Dragstrip 66. And, lastly, of course, he has a MySpace.

Turntable Lab L.A. celebrates their 1st year

It’s been one year since Turntable Lab set up shop in L.A. and to celebrate, they’re throwing their biggest party yet—so big, in fact, it’s two parties stretched across tonight and tomorrow.

On the bill tonight we have Hollertronix (i.e. Diplo and Low Bee) and Blaqstarr at the 700 capacity EX_PLX in Echo Park (L.A.). This is likely to sell out quick, trust!

Here’s a jammy from Hollertronix’ first EP in 2004. This shit set that whole shit off:

MP3: Hollertronix - David Banner vs Lil Flip vs Eurythmics - We Bout Our Money vs Sweet Dreams

This vinyl EP has been re-released in slightly altered form (dubbed #1.5 EP) and is available now from Turntable Lab.

Oh yea, if you didn’t know by now. All the Mad Decent (label related to Diplo and Hollertronix) podcasts are available for stream (and download) from Diplo’s .mac account. However, it looks like the account has hit its bandwidth limit for the moment, so you’ll definitely want to bookmark it, check back often and get e’ything when it’s live again.

We’ll still hook you up tho! Last March, DJ Blaqqstar (preforming in L.A. tonight) dropped a mix for Mad Decent Radio Worldwide and it’s hot fire. Dude must DJ with oven-mitts on:

MP3: Mad Decent - Worldwide Radio #14, DJ Blaqstarr, I’m Bangin’ [26:42]

Visit Mad Decent’s MySpace to hear and purchase more Blaqstarr.

Yes! And on Saturday, Electro legend Egyptian Lover will be doing his stuff extra smooth for the ladies to shake it. One of the few people from L.A. doing Electro Dance Music in the 1980’s, our city’s got mad love for Lover. If you’re not up on this man, look to Wikipedia and throw this 1984 classic in heavy rotation:

MP3: Egyptian Lover - Egypt Egypt

Visit Egyptian Lover on his Myspace pages one and two. Also check out Willow the Glasslamp Killer, ’cause he’s playing Saturday and he’s fucking awesome.

Green Velvet / Cajmere in L.A. tonight

greenvelvet Green Velvet / Cajmere in L.A. tonight

L.A. has more in store tonight! Scheduled for tonight is one rare appearance by Chicago House music legend Green Velvet (a.k.a. Cajmere). So excited!

Remember ‘Percolator’ or sometimes called ‘Coffeepot (It’s Time For The Percolator)’. It’s one his earliest singles. It’s hard to believe this song is 15 years old!

MP3: Cajmere - Percolator (1992)

This was even before the flamboyant feather-hawked Green Velvet persona was born on to the House scene in 1994. This man can do no wrong!

Here are some more tracks from over the years. Some are chart-toppers, some are House club staples, others are just lesser-known personal favorites:

MP3: Green Velvet - Flash (1995)

MP3: Green Velvet - La La Land (2001)

MP3: Green Velvet - Pinup Girl (2005)

MP3: Green Velvet - Shake and Pop (2006)

Green Velvet does remixes. Listen!

MP3: Orgy - Stitches (Green Velvet Mix) (1998)

MP3: The Juan Maclean - Give Me Every Little Thing (Cajmere Remix) (2005)

MP3: Madonna - Sorry (Green Velvet Remix) (2006)

Check Green Velvet on MySpace to stream tracks, to view his tour schedule (Chicago and many dates in Europe) or just to say what up omg ur the best. You can buy Green Velvet and Cajmere releases from his official site as well as Amazon. If you’re looking for a good one to get, I highly recommend the Ministry of Sound released ‘MOS Sessions Presents: Cajmere Vs. Green Velvet‘ that dropped last year ’cause it has the best of all personalities. Last stop, check Cajmere and Green Velvet on Discogs for a more complete discography.

Postscript: Considering that the Japanther show was at capacity before 11 with a huge line outside, you might also want to know that they’re playing again with mm/dd/yyyy at The Smell tonight. Options are good.

Japanther and Matt & Kim in L.A.

MattKimandJapanther Japanther and Matt & Kim in L.A.

If you can’t make it to our Victim Dance Party in the bay tonight. Perhaps L.A. can treat you to some $8 Bklyn-style indie rock from Matt + Kim and Japanther, with support from L.A.’s own lo-fi punk experiment No Age.

I am massive Japanther lover. And this is a brief Japanther sampler platter:

MP3: Japanther - Pleased to Meet You (2003)

MP3: Japanther - 1-10 (2004)

MP3: Japanther - Flower Garden (2005)

MP3: Japanther - Seventy Nine (2007)

Japanther have just released their newest LP, ‘Skuffed Up My Huffy’ and it’s mad LOLz. And good! Perhaps their best yet? The track ‘Seventy Nine’ is a sample. The full album is released on EXO Records, and you can buy it directly through the EXO Records MySpace. You can find some earlier Japanther albums and shirts for sale on Japanther’s MySpace. All that said, enjoy one last track from Japanther, another new one from ‘Skuffed Up My Huffy’ ‘titled, ‘Boys Don’t Cry’—a little ditty borrowed from The Cure:

MP3: Japanther - Boys Don’t Cry (2007)

Off-genre covers are my favorite. How about you?

Moving on, I can’t say much about Matt and Kim that hasn’t already been said. They’re great! I love what they do. For this post I’m bringing back the Flosstradamus remix we posted last month:

MP3: Matt and Kim - Yea Yeah (Flosstradamus Remix)

And tacking on some more re-werks by Vyle and another by Ocelot. Yea Yeah Yea Yeah Yea Yeah 4evr:

L.A. people go see them play! And visit Matt and Kim at MySpace and get their records from their label Iheartcomix.

Old Rap Wednesdays: Freestyle Fellowship

FreestyleFellowship-IG Old Rap Wednesdays: Freestyle Fellowship

Freestyle Fellowship are rappers Aceyalone, Mikah Nine, P.E.A.C.E. and Self Jupiter. This collection of people came together in 87 or 88 at the Good Life Cafe in Leimert Park, California. Leimert Park is a center of black culture inside Los Angeles (think, similar to Harlem in N.Y.) and a place where creative people come together, and Freestyle Fellowship is a prime example of that.

Freestyle Fellowship in the 80’s started as very large loose collection of Good Life regulars, but was reduced to just the 5 most dedicated by 1991, when the the group officially formed with their independently released first album, ‘To Whom It May Concern’ which created a buzz in the L.A. underground. Their sound is unique, in that it is the original (or at the least, among the original) group to do very fast rapping. Factor in their incorporation of Jazz, Scat, Electro, and vocal harmony, and a truly unique sound was born; Unique even even among most of their peers at the Good Life. Their message was often a positive, Afrocentric and intelligent commentary on life in inner-city Los Angeles and black culture in general. Here are some choice cuts from ‘To Whom It May Concern’:

MP3: Freestyle Fellowship - My Fantasy (Download) (1991)

MP3: Freestyle Fellowship - 7th Seal (1991)

MP3: Freestyle Fellowship - Sunshine Men (1991)

This first album caught the ears of (now defunct) big label 4th & Broadway (a division of Island) and their second album had a proper multi-format single, release, promotion and distribution. The second album is titled, ‘Innercity Griots’ and is pure classic material. Have a listen and you’ll know why:

MP3: Freestyle Fellowship - Inner City Boundaries (feat. Daddy-O) / Bomb Zombies (1993)

MP3: Freestyle Fellowship - Hot Potato (1993)

MP3: Freestyle Fellowship - Pure Thought (1993)

‘Innercity Griots’ was the last album the Freestyle Fellowship released 8 years. In that time, solo careers began, with the most prolific being Aceyalone’s debut solo record titled, ‘All Balls Don’t Bounce’ imprint on Capital Records. This album album established Aceyalone as a great solo artist and put him on path for the great solo career he continues to have today. I present you two songs from ‘All Balls Don’t Bounce.’ One, featuring other Good Life alumni and close associate, Abstract Rude of Abstract Tribe Unique:

MP3: Aceyalone - Deep and Wide (feat. Abstract Rude) (1995)

MP3: Aceyalone - Arythamaticulas (1995)

Aceyalone released several other solo albums and continues to do so. He has collaboration albums with producers Mumbles, RJD2, and projects with Abstract Rude and in the group Haiku D’etat which consists of Aceyalone, Mikah 9 and Abstract Rude. Good songs have been produced through these various incarnations, but I can only post so much(!) and if you like what you hear you should buy everything! Here is one song titled, ‘The Balance’ selected from ‘A Book of Human Language,’ a concept album with producer Mumbles:

MP3: Aceyalone - The Balance (1998)

Perhaps the second most successful solo artist to emerge from Freestyle Fellowship is Mikah 9, who was signed to Capitol Records around the same time as Aceyalone, but he never released an album for the label due to problems with the label. But Mikah 9 has never stoped or even slowed. Releasing independent albums and holding residencies at Koncrete Jungle (r.i.p., when they were in L.A. too) and constantly at Project Blowed. Enough type! More tracks from Mikah 9’s, ‘Timetable’ an 2001 record that archives many songs and freestyles from his career up to that point:

MP3: Mikah 9 - Life Or Death (Click Track version) (2001)

And more recently here’s a track off Myka Nyne’s (Mikah 9, he changed the spelling), the Citrus Sessions, released in 2006. This is a certified winner and proof that these dudes still have it—whatever it is. This track is titled ‘Viles’ and features P.E.A.C.E.:

MP3: Myka Nyne - Viles (feat. P.E.A.C.E.) (2006)

P.E.A.C.E. and Self Jupiter have other projects, but I’ll mostly leave that for you to discover on your o
