With the recent release of Girl Talk, I’ve been thinking about the mash-up.
With the recent release of Girl Talk, I’ve been thinking about the mash-up. Girl Talk with his mass of bloghype, was quite a disappointment (wait, can one be disappointed if one has no expectations?) Considering the mash-up, I’m trying to realize the good and the bad. Ignoring the bad, let’s reflect on the good.

Sample-based mash-up records are easy to do—but hard to do well. The mash-up can trace its roots to Double D & Steinski records starting in 1983, these records were an inspiration and foundation for sample based hip-hop music and set the stage for similar records decades to come. Mash-ups can be eloquent like, DJ Shadow’s 1996 album ‘Endtroducing’ and The Avalanches‘ 2000 album ‘Since I Left You’, or game-changing party albums like Z-Trip & DJ P’s 2001 record, ‘Uneasy Listening’ or Armand Van Helden’s 1997 record, ‘Sampleslaya’. These examples prove that a mash-up record can be an artful music arrangement, and more than just a cacophony of familiar chords and choruses.

…But I digress. Everything has a time and place! And when you want to be in the realm of familiar chords and choruses, a record I keep coming back to, far more than any Girl Talk, is Ludachrist and their funtime, ‘Bangfest’. Ludachrist is the shits-n-giggles side project of Knick (of Evol Intent) and Ewun (a.k.a. Kill The Noise), and these skillful producers know how to mash-up a pretty good party record. ‘Bangfest’ has deservingly been all over blogtown since its Big Stereo debut last November, and is available for free in its entirety at Worshipludachrist.com.

Here’s a mash’d track pulled from the mix for your own mixing and sampling purposes. It takes from Brooklyn emcee, Busta Rhymes and the iconic Ghostbuster theme.

MP3: Ludachrist – Ghost Busta Rhymes

This entry coincides with Ludachrist’s first L.A. performance tonight, July 25th, at The Roxy in West Hollywood. ‘Christ plays alongside other badmen, Villains and LAZRtag. Worship Ludachrist!

Visit Ludachrist on MySpace or at their official site, Worshipludachrist.com.

Take it personal? Is "mash-up" a bad word in itself?

Research Double Dee & Steinski and you'll have the beginning of your answer. Shadow did his most direct mash-up on 'Lesson 4'. To call 'Endtroducing' (or 'Sampleslaya') a "mash-up" is using the word liberally, but not off base—the albums sample entire bars, layered over other sampled phrases. Armand van Helden and DJ Shadow are on a whole 'nother level and working with samples from different genres and software, not completely different from Girl Talk or Ludachrist on paper.

Would it have been better to reference Coldcut's 'Paid in Full (Remix)' or DNA's remix of Susan Vega's 'Tom's Diner'? Those are more classic examples of good mash-ups (before they were called mash-ups).

In what way do you not consider them mash-ups? If you make a good case, I'm always willing to change my opinion.

On July 31, 2008, ployd said:
@Kittens

Here are a couple more Hensforth remixes, taking yet again classic songs from the nineties era (this time in the rock vein) and blending them with present-day artists to keep the alternative/hip hop folks happy…

This one’s got some rap samples from Mike Jones‘ ‘Still Tippin’ track over Smashing Pumpkins‘ ‘Zero’ for a B-More-Rap-Rock joint that will murder on the dancefloor…

This Hole/Blaqstarr blend just might get peeps pumped up enough to start moshing! Watch your face..

Until yesterday, the last we’ve heard from the man was his ‘Yummy Knockout’ edit of Gwen Stefani’s ‘Yummy’ which smashes it up against Cirez D’s (a.k.a. Eric Prydz) ‘Knockout’. We threw that little jam on this here blog not once but twice.

But this is today, and Paparazzi has shared with us his newest remixes—putting his twist on two of our the best things out there: Rochester NY’s finest club wrecker Kill The Noise and the ice creamy, dreamy, LA to NY electro punks Hearts Revolution. Epic win.

Paparazzi is resident DJ and ringleader at club DANCE at one of LA’s Arena in Los Angeles. It’s a lax 18+ to dance, 21+ to drink. Admittedly, the soundsystem is one of L.A.’s very best. If your curious peep the club’s MySpace or the official site, DanceAtArena.com for mo’ info & club photos.

Let me wrap this up with Paparazzi edit of the late great country & western hero Johnny Cash’s ‘Get Rhythm’ from 2006. Get yr toes tappin’ to teh rhythemzzz.

Sébastien Tellier, that French craftsman of sound, has created what amounts to one of the year’s first outstanding albums. With his third long player album, ‘Sexuality’, Tellier makes sensual and airy electronica with hints of French pop and a heavy dose of traditional singer/songwriter crooning. It’s Classic Tellier, and the first we’ve heard from the maestro since the Steak film score we touched on last year. More notches in the ever fuller discography of Sébastien Tellier, get fully acquainted at Discogs.

Oh, and is it worth mentioning that the ‘Sexuality’ LP is produced by the man behind the mask, Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, better known as 1/2 of Daft Punk? Yes? Thought so.

Enjoy these choice cuts among an album of choice cuts. The advance album has been in my playlist almost daily for over a month now:

Wow, it’s like sex for your ear with no messy cleanup! But, baby, we ain’t pulled out yet. Get a load of this mix by frequent collaborator, SebastiAn, of Ed Banger fame, provides a signature choppy electrofied remix of the fashionable ‘Sexual Sportswear’:

Then I got to thinkin’ ‘Damn, what happened to homie? Did he find some other blog to give all his lovin’ to?’ I cried into my pillow for a bit and three hours I hear a ding from the inbox and to my shock & surprise there was this brand new mash by Kimarr!

It contains some new and old and by the end, it chops up to Baltimore.
Check.

NYC’s DJ Morsy picked a hilarious name for his latest project which started out as a joke but turned into to something completely fun. This is the second installment in the ‘Emo Thug’ series which is mainstream hip hop lyrics thrown on top of that indie/electro shit we love. It’s been done before, yes, but we love it. I never tire of seeing home dudes in t-skirts doing the “lean back” to some electro shit.

It looks as though the folks over at URB magazine were feeling it too; ‘Emo Thug 2′ got a write up in the last issue.
