L.A.’s LAZRtag whom we introduced last month have taken on R&B pop superstar Rhianna for some hot remix love. This is where top 40 meets bottom frequency.
I love this track because it taps into a history of music: One of borrowing, sampling, reusing, reinterpreting—’Don’t Stop the Music’ employs Michael Jackson’s famous chant from his ‘Thriller‘ album 1983 single, ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’‘, which was in turn was nicked from Manu Dibango’s 1972 track, ‘Soul Makossa‘, widely regarded as the first (or among the first) disco record ever. This track is a snapshot of music culture today: LAZRtag recomposing a contemporary pop-princess’ track, who borrowed from the ’80s king of pop, who borrowed from the roots of disco, using Manu Dibango’s jazz and traditional Cameroonian music soil. How far we’ve come:
Berlin electro/techno master Boys Noize remixed Michael Jackson on a whitelabel 12″ in 2006. The track is labeled as “eAT IT”. Interestingly, the B-side is funny man “Weird” Al Yankovic’s track of the same name. (Now a question, how does this compare to the hot-shit Villains‘ track ‘Thrilla’ found here?)
We like pop—and sometimes a little more when it’s fux0r’d fer teh club. You like pop too? Try more in our “Pop” archives. If you’re diggin’ the tracks above, be sure to snag the Felix Cartal remix of Ashley Simpson’s ‘L.O.V.E.’. Proper pop, properly remixed.
As promised in the introduction earlier this month, more Villains coming at you. Today we have their first mix, ‘Vol. 1′ for your speakers. So, crank ‘em up and get an earful of this electro set that the Villains “can almost call … a ‘classic’ mix wrapping up what was hot for 2007″.
This mix is atypical for an electro set for two reasons: First, it has an emcee, LA’s own D’n'B champ, Whiskey Pete, who spikes the beat-punch with a few shots of party raps. Second, the Villains can cut a mean record and they bring that turntabilsm to the table—or pair of turntables as it were.
‘Vol. 1′ is also one of the few places you’ll hear the mastered version of the Justice’s ‘DVNO’, LA Riots remix—that will be appearing on an upcoming Ed Banger EP.

Dang! That song is a dastardly juggernaut! I loved that ‘Hunting for Witches’ RAC remix we put up in April and of course we loved the Crystal Castles one that we up’d later, but folks, I love this one. It’s a new favorite mix of a new(ish) Bloc Party classic!
Villains have also tore apart a Michael Jackson sample from ‘Thriller’ and made it their own—’Thrilla’. As Vincent Price said, “no mere mortal can resist the evil of the thriller.” Bwahaha.
You like? Next week promise to have more from Villains. Same time, same channel. POW!
LA/OC heads, you lucky bastards, you can get the full experience and catch Villains DJ at Trust on Saturday (located at Proof Bar in Santa Ana) or at Tilt on Sunday (located at Jimmy’s Lounge in Los Angeles).
It’s Friday afternoon. I’m at work looking more disheveled than usual. I’m hungover. Which is par for the course on Fridays. However, this is no ordinary hangover. This is one of those super heavy duty hangovers. I consumed so much alcohol last night I think if I were to cry (which I might) vodka would probably come out.
I feel like how Michael Jackson looks. There’s no where I’d love to be more than in my bed hugging my knees to my chest underneath my Sailor Moon covers. But alas I’m stuck in corporate hell until 6 p.m.
Enjoy these warm covers & watch the clock, like I am.
