Parisian electronic music diva, Miss Kittin, will release her second solo record titled ‘BatBox’ on the Nobody’s Bizzness label early this year. This anticipated record follows her 2004 solo debut, ‘I COM’.

Miss Kittin has always had a gothic touch and ‘Batbox’ might be the darkest record yet, but the record still has a surprising undercurrent of optimism. The artist explains ‘Batbox’ like this:

BatBox is a redemption. Let the bats in my head fly out. I was saying goodbye to old ghosts, allowing light to reduce the shadows and fight the dark. It was like opening a window on new perceptions, not with my eyes but through intuition, just like bats and cats do.

‘BatBox’ has quickly become one of my favorite records for the new year and I don’t see it leaving rotation any time soon. Standout tracks include the first single, ‘Kittin is High’ which also carries a 1-2 punch of fantastic B-Sides by Norwegian remixer Black Labelle and East London doll JoJo De Freq. I’ve also found the tune, ‘Barefoot Tonight’ utterly infectious.

Of course before, inbetween and always, Miss Kittin has recorded alongside verious partner including The Hacker, Golden Boy, and Felix Da Housecat, as well as releasing several DJ mixes albums—many of which you can familiarize yourself with at Amazon.

The aforementioned collaborations have resulted in some of my very favorite records. Here’s the cream to fall in love with, if you haven’t already had the pleasure:

MP3: Felix Da Housecat - Silver Screen Shower Scene (feat. Miss Kittin) (Static Revenger Mix)

The Felix Da Housecat track above was just right—but I hit you with the remix that makes things just a little crazier—it comes from one of Felix’s peers, North Hollywood’s disco house veteran Static Revenger. That track resides on the ‘Madame Hollywood / Shower Scene’ remix EP alongside remixes from Adult., Ladytron, Jacques Lu Cont and others. It came out in 2002 and it’s OOP (out of print) but worth seeking out (just like the rest of the lot above, wink wink).

And, guess what, even more Miss Kittin in the archives.

Black girls.

misskittin Black girls.

Seems like everyone’s making up genres these days. New Rave, New Grave, Rip Hop, nu-doodoo-metal. MY TURN! ‘Black Girl’. Female vocals on top of dark-electro. Not a hint of indie. Straight up electro for that ass.

Who would fall into the ‘Black Girls’ genre, you ask?
Let me lace you with some tracks.

If you work at a record store start labeling stuff as ‘Black Girl’. If your boss tries to give you any static, tell him I said it was aight.

It’s still Tuesday & it’s still Wavey: Gina X Performance.

gina x Its still Tuesday & its still Wavey: Gina X Performance.

I DJ at an 80’s club sometimes. The opening slot. When only the bartenders, the regulars, true eighties heads & people who don’t want to pay the cover are there. Most people hate the opening slot, but I like it. I have the pleasure of spinning some of the more obscure (ahem, better) stuff from back in the day, without someone requesting Depeche Mode or Morrissey every 5 minutes.

Gina X Performance is one of those artists that fall into the obscure category. If someone would’ve have told me that this album was made this year, I’d have no reason to doubt it. GXP are considered more disco/electro, but the track ‘Be a Boy’ is bathed in new wavey-ness. Artists probably influenced by Gina X include Miss Kittin, Revl9n & Peaches.

Here’s three tracks from their 1979 ‘Nice Mover’ album.
Gina X Performance - Nice Mover
Gina X Perfomance - Be A Boy
Gina X Performance - No G.D.M.

The whole album from the first track to the final is gold. Gigolo Records re-released No G.D.M. on 12 inch. You can go pick that up here Its still Tuesday & its still Wavey: Gina X Performance..
