Lupe Fiasco, skater boy champion of Chicago hip hop, released a 22 minute long mixtape recently titled ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’. On it, Lupe pulls some ol’ Ice Cube shit jackin’-for-beats move. But the new twist is that the contemporary MC, Lupe sources beats from the likes of Radiohead, instead of sticking to the traditional hip hop, funk and soul selections. Now, Radiohead might be The Beatles of Generation Y. That said, is Lupe, as they say, pissing on the Mona Lisa? Perhaps, but in that debate, I still call it art. Go on. Go on.

There’s split track version of the mixtape available out there on the internets, but here is the original “cassette style” single track that Lupe originally dropped late last month (Mediafire).

Marinate on that while waiting for Lupe Fiasco’s next LP, ‘LOSERS’, or ‘LASERS’, as it takes a double meaning with an anarchy symbol in the second character (a symbol created by another great artist, Vivienne Westwood with assistance from pioneering hip hop musician (World Famous Supreme Team), Sex Pistol’s manager, and Vivienne’s 70s-era boyfriend, Malcolm McLaren. The more you know, yo.)

San Francisco native, Public (Nick Marsh) began recording/producing music with a 4-track tape deck at the age of 11. In his teens Marsh played in numerous post-hardcore bands, and in 2004 began an electronic solo project titled: “Marsh”. “Marsh” released one self-titled LP, and two EP’s during the two year span the project lasted for.

After his Marsh project & endless months of toying with samplers, drum machines, and a long list of music programs, Marsh had recorded enough solid material to birth a new project; Public. Despite the recent emergence into dance music, Public has built a large library of original and remixed tracks. Get your mouse pointers on these tracks that will make you want to dance, shake, move and perhaps even lean back.

Like you, we have girlfriends, ex-girlfriends, stalkees, stalkers, parents, teachers, taxes, bosses, bills and probation officers that sometimes eat up way more time than we would like. Which leads to our sometimes incommunicado status. We apologize. Real life sucks. The internet is way better.

Now that that’s out of the way, in our absence we got a lot done. We sponsored a few showcases at SXSW, djayed a few gigs around town including one with The Rapture, we got interviewed in BPM, Kittens f.k.a. ‘Bumpsdick’ made a new Missingtoof logo (which you can see in the image above) and our boy Basura laid down this brand new Official Missingtoof Mix in hopes that y’all will forgive us for being mad M.I.A.

Mixtape Monday

Various technical difficulties (a.k.a. hangovers) prevented us from getting the new server up and running liked we’d hoped to this weekend. We’re also dangerously close to bursting our bandwidth yet again, so we’re going to have to cool it on posting mp3’s until the switch which will happen tonight — scout’s honor.

But we can’t leave you guys hanging without any music to get your through your hellish work days, so please accept this nifty little indie/electro mixtape we made as an offering.

@ robad, yep apache. linux server. the initial problem was getting root access to the server. I use putty to SSH to a linux box myself and my friend use, but this host (who shall remain nameless) tries to make accessing the root extra difficult. I was able to do that and change the php.ini so I bump up the max upload limit; the db is 5mb. But! I installed the latest version of wordpress on the new server and the was using an older version on this server. Having upgraded WP installations before I didnt think it would be a big deal, but wordpress made some major changes this time around, so the tables in the databases didn't match. So, I had to to upgrade the wordpress installation on this server and that's when everything went to shit. About half of the plugins we used no longer worked! So, I spent most of last night/ this morning just finding replacements or work arounds for the the plugins we used. & yeah, that's where I am now. Actually, I think I should just create a fresh layout because I hard coded some php strings into this theme to make the old plugins work and after having not poked around in the code for a while I forgot what I put in & where! Haha. So, I guess saying server woes is kind of incorrect, it's more like Wordpress woes.

So-Cal party throwers Acid Girls recently relocated to Berlin to lay down some tracks and producer a whole proper album. It is sad not having them state-mates with us anymore, but we are glad that they are taking time off from their busy touring schedule to make some tunes. We wait for their full release but until then we’ll settle for this awesome mix that they sent to us from across the pond.

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball, or throws you into prison. You never really know what the next day will bring. Everyone experiences ‘one of those days’ or months, or hell, years. Everyone. Even 3 time DMC Champions have some tough times like our friend Drastik of world famous DJ crew Stylusts .

Life ain’t always dance clubs & roses. And that’s what this mix is about. Drastik made this around a time when certain aspects of his life weren’t necessarily going the way he wanted & it reflects in the song selection. The vibe, mood, etc. is captured very well throughout the mix and kind of puts you in the state of mind he was in.

“I think peeps dealing with similar issues will be able to relate”, says Drastik of this mix. Hopefully y’all do. Download it and tell him what you think.
