Quality Time with Tittsworth + ‘Twelve Steps’ Out August 12th

titts Quality Time with Tittsworth + Twelve Steps Out August 12th

We interviewed Titts months ago and it dawned on us that his album is coming out tomorrow, August 12th! (Via Plant Music- pick that shit up!!) So here’s the interview- a little late, but here it is…

So first off, how did you start DJing?

I started collecting odd pieces of vinyl…hip hop, rare 45’s, local band 7″’s, that sorta thing. I didn’t have any formal music knowledge, but even early on it was my biggest passion. So when I discovered I could be hands on with music, but without knowing an instrument, things clicked and I knew it was on!

Who are some of your influences?

Metalheadz and Reinforced Records (drum and bass), Dischord and other DC/MD bands (jen hitt!), a lot of old soul (Isaac Hayes (R.I.P.), Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, The JB’s), hip-hop (Ghost Face, Outkast, Nas, Camp Lo), Nirvana, Sonic Youth, UK Hardcore, DJ Technics, Scottie B., too many to name…

What’s one of the most memorable party experiences you’ve ever had?

DJing London for the first time and it feeling like I was playing out for the first time. I was so nervous it affected my vision.

Your remixes are heatt. How do you go about choosing what to remix, and how long is the [remixing] process for you?

Generally I start with a song I like in the first place but keep my audience in mind too. It’s a balance of what I like, with what is liked, and what I think needs to be liked.

Any remixes in the works?

Some major labels have been reaching out, really excited about that. I’m wrapping up a Kanye remix right now with my homey Costas Nakassis of Asih. I love remixes but I’m trying to shift more into original production.

Do you plan on releasing a self-produced album anytime soon?

Just finished it actually.. It’s called “12 Steps”…100% original stuff, all club inspired and featuring a wide range of music– from moody soundscapes to polished songs featuring vocals by Nina Sky, Kid Sister, Pitbull, The Federation, DJ Assault and more.

What are your thoughts on the ‘B-More’ style/genre?

I think it’s one of the best genres for DJ’s because of its open format, mixability and flexibility. Personally I think it’s time to up the bar a little bit though.

What do you think about the dance music scene nowadays?

Better than sex. You can get away with murder. On average I play half a dozen genres+, practically remixing on the fly w/ Serato. Genre boundaries are blurred , plus music is back to fun while still being creative in certain ways.

Anything else ya wanna add?

I need Popeye’s detox.

Beirut, the producer/arranger from Los Angeles (not the popular indie band which shares the name, and came later), just dropped a freebie remix album, ‘The Remixes Vol. 2′, that consists of mostly hip-hop and a few R&B remix tracks. Shit is on in my deck on repeat.

MP3: Clipse - Wamp Wamp (feat. Slim Thug) (Beirut Remix)

MP3: The Notorious B.I.G. - Young G’s (Beirut Remix)

MP3: Young Buck - 3 Kings (feat. T.I. & Young Jeezy) (Beirut Remix)

The album features tracks with Lil’ Wayne, E-40, Raekwon, Nas, Ludacris, Mobb Deep, Alicia Keys, Janet Jackson, and grip more.

MP3: M.O.P. - G Building (Beirut Remix)

I started DJing and crate-digging with this dude about 10 years ago. He got a used EPS-16+ around then and built up the production credentials from there. Holler at ‘em if you’re feeling it. He’s got a MySpace with some original production, no doubt.
