Broken Spindles: ‘Introvert’ new from ‘Kiss/Kick’ on Blank.wav records

brokenspindles Broken Spindles: Introvert new from Kiss/Kick on Blank.wav records

Omaha, Nebraska ambient-rock outfit, Broken Spindles, is the the brainchild of Joel Petersen, the celebrated bass player of dance-rock band The Faint and former member of punk band Beep Beep. All of which had a happy home on Omaha’s Saddle Creek Records, until the recent creation of The Faint’s own label Blank.wav, which saw its first album release last year with The Faint’s own eighth full-length, ‘Fasciination’, and will be releasing Broken Spindles fifth record ‘Kiss/Kick’ on February 17th as its second release. This first track from the upcoming record to hit the ‘net is in heavy rotation at my house! Where the most recent Broken Spindles record, 2008’s self-released ‘Document Number One’ was a journey through sparse ethereal instrumental music, this new single is a return to a bit poppier music with vocals—reminding me most closely to the work of Death Cab’s Benjamin Gibbord and electronic producer Dntel with The Postal Service, due to the breathy emotive songwriting-driven lyrics over blippy-rock beats (or just slap the label “No Wave” on it). For Broken Spindles, all work is created and sung by Joel Petersen, and from the press blurb, “lyrically, the album explores human fragility, both in body and mind”.

Broken Spindles began in 2001 as a project to score a small film, but by 2002 was developed into Joel’s pet-project that continues to live. Broken Spindles biggest commercial success is nothing you’re likely to recognize, a extremely desolate piano piece on the higher register, titled ‘Song No Song’, from the 2004 LP, ‘Fulfilled/Complete’, which was used in a Lexus commercial. It won’t ring a bell so I’ll put this favorite off the same album in its place:

Duchess Says- ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ Out Now! + An Exclusive Basura Re-Edit of ‘Black Flag’

dc Duchess Says Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs Out Now! + An Exclusive Basura Re Edit of Black Flag

Montreal’s Duchess Says finally come out with their debut full length, ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’, out on highly-acclaimed Alien 8 Recordings (also home to acts as diverse as Japanoise terrorist Merzbow and psych/prog rockers Acid Mothers Temple).

‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ is an energetic and frantic beast of an album that at once will force you to go crazy (on the dancefloor or on any surface for that matter). Tracks like ‘Rabies (Baby’s Got The)’ and ‘Melon’ are pure rock & roll mayhem, whereas tracks like ‘La Friche’ and ‘A Century Old’ are more in the psych-rock-freak-out sorta vein.

Coming from personal experience, Duchess Says are amazing live, and with this release, they manage to achieve that level of energy. Highly recommended.

For fans of Les Georges Leningrad, Erase Errata, & The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Here are two tracks taken from ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ (also featured on their ‘Budgie Laboratories’ ep)…

Bay Area-based electronic/synth/dark/coldwave duo The Sixteens have been one of my absolute favorite bands since their ‘Casio’ album came out years ago on Cochon Records.

If you’re fan of ‘proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and/or no-wave’, then The Sixteens are a good place to continue your love of said genres!

Here are two tracks taken from their latest album on awesome label Hungry Eye Records, entitled ‘Into the Goldwave of Future Non-Rip Off’.

Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984: Basura’s Pick of the Week

mute audio docs Mute Audio Documents 1978 1984: Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is ‘Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984′.

Compiled of Mute Records’ singles from the first 6 years of their existence, (which ends up being 128 tracks, including output from bigger bands like Depeche Mode & Yazoo), ‘Mute Audio Documents’ is, simply put, absolute essential listening for the music aficionado/lover.

With a diverse and eclectic roster that includes acts like indie dance punks Art Brut, industrial electronic visionaries Cabaret Voltaire, avant-garde vocalist Diamanda Galas, electro/synthpop darlings The Knife, techno god Plastikman, and many many more, there’s no doubt that Mute Records has influenced countless bands, musicians, and music sub-genres since their inception as a label 30 years ago.

Below is a list of standout tracks from ‘Mute Audio Documents’. With musical styles ranging from proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and no-wave, there should be a little something for every single one of you ‘Toofers’ to enjoy!

I urge you to listen carefully and take notes- you can learn alot from these pioneers…

Glass Candy – I Always Say Yes

Glass Candy

Portland’s finest No Wave sexpots Glass Candy go Italo Disco on our asses, but that’s OK, because they do it so well. The title track, ‘I Always Say Yes’, is a dreamy disco cut- I imagine being at a sleazy club, fading and gazing into the DJ lights after sniffing lines and lines of grade-A cocaine with hookers. On the B-Side is ‘The Chameleon’, less dreamy and much darker than it’s counter part. There’s an instrumental and an a cappella, and the a capella is not really an a cappella- more like a really detached, stripped down version of the track.

This is hot shit.

Crack: W.A.R.

crackwar Crack: W.A.R.

The sonic black eye that is the Crack W.A.R. was spawned from a cough syrup-fueled dream in 1995 somewhere in the Midwest. When King Riff, the founder later relocated to San Francisco the line up went through a ton of different members until synthesizer aficionado Obscuratron & vocalists L’Erin & Le Kim signed on.

In 2001 Crack W.A.R. (which stands for Crack We Are Rock) released their debut album, a split 12″ with Wolf Eyes & Ann Arbor. In ‘02 Tigerbeat6 released Silent Fantasy & the next year “Cosmic Mind Flight’ & had ‘Animal Trap’ remixed by Tommie Sunshine.
