Duchess Says- ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ Out Now! + An Exclusive Basura Re-Edit of ‘Black Flag’

dc Duchess Says- Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs Out Now! + An Exclusive Basura Re-Edit of Black Flag

Montreal’s Duchess Says finally come out with their debut full length, ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’, out on highly-acclaimed Alien 8 Recordings (also home to acts as diverse as Japanoise terrorist Merzbow and psych/prog rockers Acid Mothers Temple).

‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ is an energetic and frantic beast of an album that at once will force you to go crazy (on the dancefloor or on any surface for that matter). Tracks like ‘Rabies (Baby’s Got The)’ and ‘Melon’ are pure rock & roll mayhem, whereas tracks like ‘La Friche’ and ‘A Century Old’ are more in the psych-rock-freak-out sorta vein.

Coming from personal experience, Duchess Says are amazing live, and with this release, they manage to achieve that level of energy. Highly recommended.

For fans of Les Georges Leningrad, Erase Errata, & The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Here are two tracks taken from ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ (also featured on their ‘Budgie Laboratories’ ep)…

Bay Area-based electronic/synth/dark/coldwave duo The Sixteens have been one of my absolute favorite bands since their ‘Casio’ album came out years ago on Cochon Records.

If you’re fan of ‘proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and/or no-wave’, then The Sixteens are a good place to continue your love of said genres!

Here are two tracks taken from their latest album on awesome label Hungry Eye Records, entitled ‘Into the Goldwave of Future Non-Rip Off’.

If you’re liking the lovely sounds of The Sixteens, please visit Cochon Records & Hungry Eye Records for some similar-sounding bands, and check out The Sixteens Myspace Page for them European tour dates…

Poni Hoax- Images of Sigrid

poni Poni Hoax- Images of Sigrid

French indie/electronic band Poni Hoax recently came out with one hell of an album in ‘Images of Sigrid’, in some instances recalling bands like LCD Soundsystem, Who Made Who, Roxy Music, and Talking Heads.

Super catchy hooks + hummable melodies + basslines that stick like rice= Poni Hoax. The French did it again.

Here are two choice cuts off the super-solid ‘Images of Sigrid’..

Here’s “The Bird is On Fire’…Killer bass stabs. And more cowbell please..

MP3: Poni Hoax- The Bird Is On Fire

‘Antibodies.’ It’s that good new disco shit.

MP3: Poni Hoax- Antibodies

This track, ‘Budapest’, was the standout off their self-titled debut album, which features guest vocalist Olga Kouklaki and has been a Missingtoof favorite ever since it’s release..

L.A.’s Guns’N'Bombs are wise old record collectors. You probably know they crank out the finest gentleman’s techno, but did you know that they do the disco? The folks at Echo Park Records gave us this mix last week and it’s been the rotation for summer ever since.

Out of the retro mode here’s some more good stuff in the form of a remix of Guns’N'Bombs Kitsune debut, ‘Nothing is Getting Us Anywhere’ from more of L.A.’s best, Acid Girls.

MP3: Guns’N'Bombs - Nothing is Getting Us Anywhere (Acid Girls Remix)

Can’t neglect these Guns’N'Bombs remixes, an eclectic array of mixes for my hip-hop uncle (I wish), Wu-Tang’s Ghostface Killah, iconic goth-rock band, The Cult and poppy Junior Senior (of which the ‘Bombs Turbotito was a member). All recommended:

MP3: The Cult - Sound of Destruction (Guns’N'Bombs Remix)

MP3: Junior Senior - Can I Get Get Get (Guns’N'Bombs Jak The Tab Remix)

Oh shit! Guns’N'Bombs tours exotic locals such as Tapei, Bangkok, Portland, Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco to name a few. Full dates and details on Guns’n'Bombs MySpace tour page.

Mt. Sims- A Grave EP

mtsimslogo Mt. Sims- A Grave EP

Hungry Eye Records, home to well-respected bands like The Vanishing & The Sixteens, is now home to Mt. Sims (Who at one point used to be the musical vision of one Matt Sims, but is now a full-on band).

mtsimsband Mt. Sims- A Grave EP

Speaking in the most general aspect, with their now much darker, brooding sound, Mt. Sims would fit pretty well between some Joy Division, She Wants Revenge, & Bauhaus (Mt. Sims actually had some production help from David J. on their last album, ‘Wild Light’).

Here are two tracks from ‘A Grave’, perfect for any death disco:

MP3: Mt. Sims- Grave

MP3: Mt. Sims- Lost In the Dark

What I like about Mt. Sims is, whether as a solo project or a band, they are musically adaptable. Having released two previous (more nu-electro-club sounding) albums on dance music juggernaut label International Deejay Gigolos and having toured with the likes of big-name acts like Ladytron & Peaches, we hear how versatile Mt. Sims’ sound really is.

Here are two cuts off of Mt. Sims’ first album, ‘Ultra Sex’:

MP3: Mt. Sims- Unspeakable

If you like the darker sounds of Mt. Sims of the present, you may find a liking to other acts over at Hungry Eye Records. If you like your beats more electronic and clubby, and enjoy Mt. Sims’ sound of the past, check out the International Deejay Gigolos website. Either way, you’re in for some great music. But who says you have to choose?? Visit both sites!

Royal Rumble - ‘Stand & Deliver (Adam & the Ants cover)’ + Minimal Mix

royalrumble Royal Rumble - Stand & Deliver (Adam & the Ants cover) + Minimal Mix

Always on some ol’ next shit, L.A.’s Royal Rumble come off with a properly executed cover of iconic Post-Punk and New Wave band, Adam & the Ants’s ‘Stand and Deliver’. The Rumble’s RussInABox handles the vocals.

MP3: Royal Rumble - Stand and Deliver (Adam and the Ants cover)

This cover is just one in a series of sixty (that’s right, 60!) new cover songs, served up free as part of Buffet Libre’s ‘Rewind 2′ project. Buffet Libre put the tracks up free last week and we’ve marinated in Buffet downloads ever since—Does this sound appetizing?: Dragonette covering ZZ Top. Frankmusik covering The Police, and Cryptonites remixing Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Those are just a tiny sample of the delectable tunes served up, right now, for free, at Buffet Libre. Go hungry. Dig in.

Royal Rumble also laced us up with something different—a mix in the minimal techno vein, although not in it’s purest form. Perhaps it’s faux minimal or “MnmLOL” as Royal Rumble have coined it.

Tracklist:

  1. Guy Gerber & Chaim - MySpace
  2. In Flagranti - Firmly Planted Memories
  3. Guido Schneider & Andre Galluzzi - Albertina
  4. Oliver Koletzki - Da Bleibt Er Ganz Cool
  5. Guy J - Under Pressure
  6. Oliver Huntemann - Real Love feat. Michael Skelton
  7. Andre Crom - Bodenturnen Dub
  8. Acid Girls - Palms (Joe and Will Ask? Remix)
  9. Stimming - Funkworm

Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984: Basura’s Pick of the Week

mute audio docs Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984: Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is ‘Mute Audio Documents 1978-1984′.

Compiled of Mute Records’ singles from the first 6 years of their existence, (which ends up being 128 tracks, including output from bigger bands like Depeche Mode & Yazoo), ‘Mute Audio Documents’ is, simply put, absolute essential listening for the music aficionado/lover.

With a diverse and eclectic roster that includes acts like indie dance punks Art Brut, industrial electronic visionaries Cabaret Voltaire, avant-garde vocalist Diamanda Galas, electro/synthpop darlings The Knife, techno god Plastikman, and many many more, there’s no doubt that Mute Records has influenced countless bands, musicians, and music sub-genres since their inception as a label 30 years ago.

Below is a list of standout tracks from ‘Mute Audio Documents’. With musical styles ranging from proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and no-wave, there should be a little something for every single one of you ‘Toofers’ to enjoy!

I urge you to listen carefully and take notes- you can learn alot from these pioneers…

Public Image Ltd.- Second Edition/Metal Box: Basura’s Pick of the Week

public_image_limited Public Image Ltd.- Second Edition/Metal Box: Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is Public Image Ltd.’s album ‘Second Edition’.

Public Image Ltd. (PiL for short) was formed by Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon after they disbanded. ‘Second Edition’ was PiL’s second album (originally released as ‘Metal Box’ in a metal film canister on 3 12″s).

This is the soundtrack for those gloomy days, as Lydon’s detached, anxious vocals and somber lyrics, combined with the stark, austere sound of the rest of the band make for quite a listening experience.

Having influenced bands like LCD Soundsystem & The Rapture, there’s no doubt that PiL played a big part in the ‘Post-Punk’ movement alongside bands like Joy Division, Gang of Four, & Magazine. This is Death Disco!!!

Panico- Subliminal Kill: Basura’s Pick of the Week

panico Panico- Subliminal Kill: Basuras Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music I personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks pick is Chilean band Panico, who make catchy (dance/post/disco)-punk that should appeal to fans of bands like !!!, The Rapture, & ESG.

The overall sound of ‘Subliminal Kill’ is very raw, almost like it was recorded live at some crazy house party. ‘Subliminal Kill’ was released on indie French label Tigersushi and was co-produced by electronic music pioneers Joakim & Cristian Vogel.

More cowbell!!!

Pretty sweet if you ask us. And we’re glad to see that robot chick from the old A Tribe Called Quest albums getting work again. ;)

Tronik Youth, released his ‘We Are’ single last year on Back Yard Recordings. addition to a wildin’ remix by Italian techno-wreckers Franz & Shape (who Tronik Youth has also remixed, in addition to being remixed).

Tronik Youth has also done some nice remixes, including this new one for Nottingham Indie sensation Late of the Pier (who we haven’t mentioned in way too long), an official b-side remix of Gossip’s break out single ‘Standing in the Way of Control’, which we think still has a lot of shelf life left, and this interesting bootleg remix of Post Punk icons Joy Division (a nice follow up to last week’s Sisters of Mercy remix post here.
