Lupe Fiasco, skater boy champion of Chicago hip hop, released a 22 minute long mixtape recently titled ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’. On it, Lupe pulls some ol’ Ice Cube shit jackin’-for-beats move. But the new twist is that the contemporary MC, Lupe sources beats from the likes of Radiohead, instead of sticking to the traditional hip hop, funk and soul selections. Now, Radiohead might be The Beatles of Generation Y. That said, is Lupe, as they say, pissing on the Mona Lisa? Perhaps, but in that debate, I still call it art. Go on. Go on.

[snip mp3]2009-12/kittens/Lupe Fiasco – Track 2 (National Anthem-Radiohead).mp3[/snip]

There’s split track version of the mixtape available out there on the internets, but here is the original “cassette style” single track that Lupe originally dropped late last month (Mediafire).

Marinate on that while waiting for Lupe Fiasco’s next LP, ‘LOSERS’, or ‘LASERS’, as it takes a double meaning with an anarchy symbol in the second character (a symbol created by another great artist, Vivienne Westwood with assistance from pioneering hip hop musician (World Famous Supreme Team), Sex Pistol’s manager, and Vivienne’s 70s-era boyfriend, Malcolm McLaren. The more you know, yo.)

The Under The Covers column returns! We’ve slowly been collecting more cover songs that run the gamut from awesome to odd to awful. All varieties are worth hearing! Listen in awe or disdainful laughter.

30 Seconds to Mars covers Kanye West’s ‘Stronger’ live on BBC Radio 1. This falls into the laughable category even though frontman Jared Leto delivers the vocals so earnestly. They saved the Daft Punk vocals, so don’t expect any. I’d be rolling if they tried.

MP3: 30 Seconds to Mars – Stronger (Kayne West cover)

Ontario’s hardcore rockers Fucked Up covering Justice’s ‘Stress’ a few months back. Fucking awesome.

MP3: Fucked Up – Stress (Justice cover)

File this under fantastic, I first heard do this Pink Floyd cover at last month’s Vegoose festival and was very impressed. Not many groups can come close to a classic, but the The Shins do.

MP3: The Shins – Breathe (Pink Floyd Cover)

The Lemonheads folk-rock version of Misfits‘ Danzig-era punk classic ‘Skulls’. Fucking ‘ardcore!

MP3: The Lemonheads – Skulls (Misfits cover)

And in that same vein, this Zwan (Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins fame’s 2001-2003 project) cover of Metal gods Iron Maiden on ‘Mark of the Beast’. Probably one of my favorite covers comes at you from the Spun soundtrack.

MP3: Zwan – Number of the Beast (Iron Maiden cover)

Next up, Lightspeed Champion covering The Beatles immortal John Lennon. Lightspeed Champion is Devonte Hynes or just “Dev”, formerly of thrash-rap-punk group Test Icicles. Test Icicles remains one of my favorite things ever. I seriously moaned and writhed while morning the death of the Test Icicles last year. But the musicians live on! Dev maintains a blog at TheWorldForgot.com, there he puts up a great many home recordings—quite different from Test Icicles, but great in a whole new way:

The track has been remixed by many including Ellen Allien. It was also sampled by hip hop group Child Rebel Soldier (CRS) which consists of Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Pharrell. Xxxchange takes the song and turns it up just a tad, giving it a little foot tapping drum beat and a few back cymbals tossed in for good measure.

After much waiting and speculation, Radiohead has released the details about their seventh album, ‘In Rainbows’. Still under the guidance of superproducer Nigel Godrich (ever since ‘The Bends’)—but now label-free—after fulfilling their contractual obligation to their former boss, Capitol with 2004’s ‘Hail to the Thief’. Radiohead is now more indie rock than your favorite indie rock band.

Now, get a load of this; the part that’s important to you: Beginning October 10th, less than one week away, you can get the full retail album through Radiohead’s official site and pay what you think it’s worth (and/or what is feasible for you). The mp3 files are yours to keep, forever, DRM-free and ready to be listened to and loved.

Alternatively, there is a tangible and glorious ‘In Rainbows’ “DISCBOX” package for sale that will ship in December—it’s pictured above, costs £40.00 (approx. $81) and will appeal to those who value vinyl LPs, 1411kbps CD masters, package design and album art (put me down for one of those types). …and yet, another option, a regular CD package slated for early 2008 release. But, the pay-what-you-will download deal is what’s current.

Leave it to the best rock band in the world to give this a try. An experiment in “gift economy“! Upon checkout at InRainbows.com, if you’ve selected the “DOWNLOAD” option, you will see the payment field is blank and the only guidance is that “IT’S UP TO YOU“. No, really. $0.00 is perfectly acceptable (you bloody pinchfists!).

Can’t wait ’til October 10th? The blogisfear is teeming with recent concert recordings of ‘In Rainbows’ tracks. So, instead of doing that, I’m passing the baton to Rawkblog, which has a done a fantastic job at collecting these various live recordings right here.

What I really want to do instead is post the classics (one from each album) and some of my favorite bastardizations of classics (a.k.a. the remixes)!

The Classics:

MP3: Radiohead – Creep (1993)

MP3: Radiohead – Street Spirit (Fade Out) (1995)

MP3: Radiohead – Paranoid Android (1997)

MP3: Radiohead – The National Anthem (2000)

MP3: Radiohead – I Might Be Wrong (2001)

MP3: Radiohead – Backdrifts. (Honeymoon is Over.) (2003)

The Bastardizations:

DJ Shadow remixed Radiohead in 2003, however the remix was rejected by Capitol because of the heavy sampling of George W. Bush speeches. DJ shadow pressed up some whitelabel 10″ singles of the track on die-cut vinyl that looks like a demonic Dick Cheney head (see it at Discogs). The limited run was given away with a purchase on his site some years back.

MP3: Radiohead – The Gloaming (DJ Shadow’s Would You Buy a War From This Man Remix) (2003)

An official remix by Four Tet that appeared on 2004’s ‘COM LAG (2plus2isfive)’ ep:

MP3: Radiohead – Skttrbrain (Four Tet Remix) (2004)

A pair of bootleg remixes from a pair of white label vinyls. House and breaks remixes from Phoreyz and Aquasky, respectively.

MP3: Radiohead – Everything in its Right Place (Phoreyz vs. Radiohead Remix) (2001)

MP3: Aquasky vs. Radiohead – Everything in its Right Place (2005)

Whet your appetite? Gobble up classic Radiohead at Amazon.com (CDs are not a dead format!). Get on Radiohead’s InRainbows.com to “pre-order” the download or discbox. It’s like desert, for your ears.

“I don’t know which came first- shitty rave music or the drugs… I wonder if it was just these non-music fuck heads who are, you know, sitting in their house one day and they dicked around on their Macintosh and they go ‘bloop bleep bleep bloop’…”

That there [courtesy of Panacea] is the intro to Modeselektor’s first official DJ mix for Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label, preceding volumes mixed by Kiki and Sascha Funke, respectively. What makes this mix so special is the fact it’s not filled with the hottest ‘bangers’ of the moment — it’s compiled of personal selections that Modeselektor love.

This is a well-rounded mix that morphs and mixes cohesively from one track to the next, blending all forms of ‘electronica’ and showing Modeselektor’s digital trickery and expertise along the way.

MP3: James Holden – Idiot

And you know we couldn’t let a Modeselektor post go by without throwing in this gem which feature Radiohead’s Thom Yorke on vocals.
