Riding on the coattails of the last post, where we shared a remix from British producer Photek of electronic-punkers The Faint, I’d like to share another from the crates—A dusty 1996 gem known as ‘Single (Photek Remix)’ for archetypal electronic-pop group Everything But The Girl. Lead singer Tracy Thorn (perhaps known to our readership as the voice on Massive Attack’s 1994 single ‘Protection’), gives a heartwrenching delivery perfect for Photek’s moody producion.
Photek gained fans for his work in under the drum & bass banner—but with arms outreached into other areas, creating a career with not only d&b accolades, but numerous accomplishments in house, ambient, electronica, and film scoring. An active remixer through the ’90s, I consider Photek’s remix for EBTG his best—I come back to this song every time I get my heart broke (or at least I would if it weren’t for my stone cold pimpin’).

Digging deeper, sample some other variety of Photek. Different flavours of drum & bass: Serving up the ambient side on ‘Ni Ten Ichi Pyo’ (Two Swords Technique)’, which found a wide circulation on MTV’s original AMP compilation. Serving up a rare 2004 techy d&B B-side, ‘Baltimore’. Even a year 2000 Billboard Dance Chart topping house track, ‘Mine To Give’:

And just when you thought this post wouldn’t get all bloggy, we have a contemporary remix from Photek’s 2007 Drum & Bass album, ‘Form & Function Vol. 2′ from blogtown favorites, LA Riots—who, as drum & bass expatriates, make a logical and experienced pair to take on a Photek production for the official B-side.
