Ian Brown: ‘Just Like You (The Prodigy Remix) plus hella old UNKLE colabos

Now, one of ‘Toof’s favorite things is seeing two seemingly different favorite things commingling & fraternizing into one super-favorite thing. I’m speaking about favorite thing Ian Brown, vocalist of seminal English band The Stone Roses (‘87-’95) and favorite thing, The Prodigy, gods of industrial techno (with broadening horizons). The two got together on Ian Brown’s newest single, ‘Just Like You’ and went half on a music love-child.

The original version of ‘Just Like You’ was lifted for ADIDAS advertising campaigns and appeared on this year’s Japanese promotional compilation for sneakerhead’s ‘One By One: kzk soundtrack from Adidas Originals by Originals’ (these) as well as on the ever fashionable Ian Brown’s sixth solo album ‘My Way’ (yep, Ian Brown is the ‘09 Ol’ Blue Eyes). More favorites culled from the years, including several from frequent collaborators (once upon a time), UNKLE. Tracks are pulled from coveted old favorites, including several Toy’s Factory/Mo’ Wax imprint Japanese releases for UNKLE’s 1999 ‘Be There’ single (providing the ‘Be There’ mixes), Mo’ Wax’s year-2000 compilation, ‘Art of War: Who Dares Win’ (providing the ‘Monkeys Were Dolphins’ remix), and UNKLE’s 2006 4 -disc boxset ‘Self Defense’ which features 15 mixes of ‘Reign’, including mixes from Evil 9 & RJD2—a song that originally appeared on UNKLE’s epic debut ‘Psyence Fiction’ (back when UNKLE was James Lavelle and DJ Shadow)—none can touch the original, IMO, but I’ll assume you heard the original; Remixes “for the heads”. Lastly a pinch of remixes nabbed from Ian Brown’s 2002 remix only album, ‘Remixes Of The Spheres’ (‘cuz I know you internets love remixes heavy posts!), on Polydor, which reps yet another UNKLE mix for Ian Brown’s 2002 single ‘F.E.A.R.’ and mixes from London’s The Freelance Hellraiser and Cedarblue.

As for Stone Roses favorites, that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms. If you like what you hear, I ask that you take on the Stone Roses as a homework assignment. Amazon.com has all the goods, from one concise “best of” release to the luxurious discography boxset.

Ian Brown will be touring Europe in 2010, and dates are posted on his site’s tour page (I hope he comes to L.A. too). Also, Ian is contending for Shockwave’s NME’s Awards 2010, so give the man a vote!

Dan Sena: ‘Panther’ plus remixes of Scanners & Yeah Yeah Yeahs

O.C.’s Dan Sena, former hardcore vocalist in Bullet Train to Vegas, Dim Mak alumni and lynch-pin in the Orange County dance music scene with Busywork (which, was run and residented alongside our buddy and featured artist, Clifford Lidell—formerly CASIO), has something for you to hear under a discoball.

We’ve got a couple fresh Dan Sena tracks. The first and original ditty with a disco-house vibe and some electro-house “oomph” titled ‘Panther’ that makes a brother just wanna move. Uncleared samples for some unclean dancing(!), just as the music gods—in all their purple crushed velvet glory—have intended.

Next up, a remix for Dim Mak’s Scanners which was released as a single December 8th with this Dan Sena remix alongside mixes by Tittsworth, Don Diablo and Dirty Disco Youth. The Scanners always remind me of the David Cronenberg’s 1981 flick of the same name (IMDb). There’s a scene in it that resembles what listening to these Dan Sena tunes looks like and it goes like this.

One more for good measure, because Yeah Yeah Yeah’s ‘Heads Will Roll’ is, like, song of the year, and this is a pretty good mixdown.

Dan Sena’s upcoming EP, ‘AYEMGEE’, will be out in 2010. Eyes peeled. ‘Panther’ is likely to prowl it’s way on it.

Lil Wayne: ‘Drop The World (feat. Eminem)’ & ‘Get A Life’ from ‘Rebirth’ album. Remixes from Flying Lotus & Stenchman

New Orleans’ MC champion Lil Wayne has an infectious one with Detroit underground-com-pop-raper Eminem on ‘Drop The World’. Eminem’s frequent pop-parody raps have made him more pop-than-pop like a US Weekly magazine—but still, the man’s got talent and now-and-then pulls off something really special that reminds me why I used to excuse myself on going out Saturday nights to to listen to him spit over KMEL. Eminem’s new album, Relapse:Refill’ drops on December 21st. On this track, who shines, Wayne or Em? I know that chorus by Wayne has been in my head all day. This is probably the least “rock” song on his “rock” album, the rest: Hella autotune.

That one keeps it DOA. But tell me this song ain’t cool as fuck and ain’t hella punk rock too, and on of the more au nautral vocal tracks.

Software says ‘Drop The World’ is 145 BPM, but in actuality, it’s more like 73 BPM (half). But the that always allows some hype club remixes. Speaking of which, here’s a few remixes of Wayne tracks in the club vein. Once comes from L.A.’s own (or Glendale’s own), Flying Lotus, that was dropped on his crew Brainfeeder’s blog December 1st. Grab the whole thing at Brainfeedersite.com, which includes two Weezy mixes and instrumentals “for the heads”. My favorite take is Fly Lo’s take on ‘I Feel Like Dying’ that was originally released on The Empire’s ‘Drought Is Over Pt.2′ mixtape. This track has a vocal sample from folk singer Karma-Ann Swanepoel’s song “Once”, that Lil Wayne was sued over. Apparently, Swanepoel doesn’t understand mixtape, sampling and remix culture.

Next up, a dubsteppin’ remix of club crashin’ ‘A Milli’ courtesy of masked Englishman Stenchman.

Lil Wayne—or as they say in court, defendant Dwayne Carter—pleaded guilty to weapon charges back in October for a the gun found on his tourbus by New York police in 2007. Lil Wayne, in accordance to his guilty plea will serve a year long prison sentence beginning February 9, which is just a week after the scheduled release of his upcoming rock album, ‘Rebirth’ from which the song above is taken.

The album is currently scheduled for February 1st release and is available for pre-order on Amazon now. The much anticipated, much delayed album has had a half-dozen scheduled release dates as early as April 7th. A December 18th, then 21st, release was scheduled before being pushed back, once again. However, I suspect the release date might be brought for once, as 500 ‘Rebirth’ albums sold through Amazon pre-order have accidentally shipped to Lil Wayne fans due to a shipping and release date snafu. These accidental CD sales arrived in mailboxes beginning last Monday—days ahead of the prior release date and months ahead of the current release date. Due to this error at Amazon, leaks are sure to flood the internet in the coming weeks. If pirated copies are the only option for consumers, Lil Wayne—and his record labels—will lose out. MTV chimes in on what this all means and options available, as does Billboard for a industry perspective.

If you want more and you’re feeling frugal, and don’t want to lurk in pirate waters, I highly suggest grabbing Weezy’s recent free mixtape, ‘No Ceilings’. Something that’s been on repeat in my house. It can be had by clicking-through to Mediafire.

Lupe Fiasco: Empire Strikes Back: A Love Story

Lupe Fiasco, skater boy champion of Chicago hip hop, released a 22 minute long mixtape recently titled ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’. On it, Lupe pulls some ol’ Ice Cube shit jackin’-for-beats move. But the new twist is that the contemporary MC, Lupe sources beats from the likes of Radiohead, instead of sticking to the traditional hip hop, funk and soul selections. Now, Radiohead might be The Beatles of Generation Y. That said, is Lupe, as they say, pissing on the Mona Lisa? Perhaps, but in that debate, I still call it art. Go on. Go on.

There’s split track version of the mixtape available out there on the internets, but here is the original “cassette style” single track that Lupe originally dropped late last month (Mediafire).

Four man, Philly meets N.Y.C. crew, Tigersapien, have a sexy sleazy tune in ‘God Knows’. The sacrilege is awesome, and so is the supreme remix production of Parisian producer Kolt13. Tigersapien’s vocals are admittedly on the emo-pop tip with a hint of whine (in the best of ways, like, say, The Faint), but I love the cockiness of it all, and I’ll tell you what, my lady friends do too! Their crossover appeal is high and the “band to watch” label is already being thrown around the blogosphere quite a bit. Enjoy this dirty love song about the truths of “hookin’ up”. This one is for you boo.

The Tigersapiens made some waves in January with the tune ‘Youth & Vitality’, particularly as remixed by N.Y. boys, Designer Drugs. The original and the remix are both rather tasty and have that same sexy swaggar.

And, I do believe these boys have a winning gimmick, wearing fuzzy tiger heads for press shots. I hope they sound as good live and keep the tiger head and champagne pourin’ on tits image rollin’ along.

Broken Spindles: ‘Introvert’ new from ‘Kiss/Kick’ on Blank.wav records

Omaha, Nebraska ambient-rock outfit, Broken Spindles, is the the brainchild of Joel Petersen, the celebrated bass player of dance-rock band The Faint and former member of punk band Beep Beep. All of which had a happy home on Omaha’s Saddle Creek Records, until the recent creation of The Faint’s own label Blank.wav, which saw its first album release last year with The Faint’s own eighth full-length, ‘Fasciination’, and will be releasing Broken Spindles fifth record ‘Kiss/Kick’ on February 17th as its second release. This first track from the upcoming record to hit the ‘net is in heavy rotation at my house! Where the most recent Broken Spindles record, 2008’s self-released ‘Document Number One’ was a journey through sparse ethereal instrumental music, this new single is a return to a bit poppier music with vocals—reminding me most closely to the work of Death Cab’s Benjamin Gibbord and electronic producer Dntel with The Postal Service, due to the breathy emotive songwriting-driven lyrics over blippy-rock beats (or just slap the label “No Wave” on it). For Broken Spindles, all work is created and sung by Joel Petersen, and from the press blurb, “lyrically, the album explores human fragility, both in body and mind”.

Broken Spindles began in 2001 as a project to score a small film, but by 2002 was developed into Joel’s pet-project that continues to live. Broken Spindles biggest commercial success is nothing you’re likely to recognize, a extremely desolate piano piece on the higher register, titled ‘Song No Song’, from the 2004 LP, ‘Fulfilled/Complete’, which was used in a Lexus commercial. ATL come L.A. DJ/Producer Le Castle Vania has earned a reputation for whipping crowds into a frenzy, no doubt aided by this staple of his sets, the hard-as-fucking-nails electro track, ‘Zero Machine’ that samples (or remixes, if you prefer) the alternative gods, The Smashing Pumpkins, classic, ‘Zero’. If last year was all about Mr. Oizo’s RATM remix (or was it, Patrick Alavi’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ (here) remix instead?), this year is all about:

Computer Club shot this over to us before his recent string of L.A. dates, including Nocuturnal Wonderland (where he straight murdered it). Nod to event coordinators like Insomniac who have, in the last year, let this indie-electro-blog-house thing get a massive stage of their own and fill it with global players. Yo, so why’s it called ‘The Messiah’ (Besides the potentially obvious, it being a straight-up cover of Renegade Hardware junglist, Konflict’s 2000 track, ‘Messiah’), here’s one you might not know, from way back to 2003, when Le Castle Vania was Messiah-1, drum’n'bass producer and operator of his own short-lived label Negaverse Recordings. The release is a tune is ‘Relic’ which got a properly massive remix by L.A.’s Gridlok and the original ‘Red Dust’. Strictly jungle (the crazy bass drops are all about half-way in):

Brighton UK’s Blood Red Shoes has been making quite a stir over in their homeland ince their inception on 2005. In 2007 they made NME’s coveted bands to watch list and this was before even recording a proper full length. Earlier this year the duo released Box of Secrets on Mercury UK, which we hear at Missingtoof can’t get enough of.

The track ‘You Bring Me Down’ is a fast paced soaring jaunt that hits harder than an eviction notice. Have a listen:

Montreal’s Duchess Says finally come out with their debut full length, ‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’, out on highly-acclaimed Alien 8 Recordings (also home to acts as diverse as Japanoise terrorist Merzbow and psych/prog rockers Acid Mothers Temple).

‘Anthologie des 3 Perchoirs’ is an energetic and frantic beast of an album that at once will force you to go crazy (on the dancefloor or on any surface for that matter). Tracks like ‘Rabies (Baby’s Got The)’ and ‘Melon’ are pure rock & roll mayhem, whereas tracks like ‘La Friche’ and ‘A Century Old’ are more in the psych-rock-freak-out sorta vein.

Coming from personal experience, Duchess Says are amazing live, and with this release, they manage to achieve that level of energy. Highly recommended.
