Dig Dug Returns

digdug Dig Dug Returns

My good friends from WTTM (Word To The Mother) are throwing this awesome record swap/listening party, the ONLY one of its kind in San Jose! This is not to be missed!

DJs:
+ David Ma (Wax Poetics, WTTM)
Mr. Ma is a well-respected and widely published hip-hop writer who specializes in interviews with classic and emerging artists in the field. As a selector his tastes run toward 60’s soul, Bowie, and the occasional party jam.

Peep David”s article on bay area musician Chief Xcel right here.

+ Justin Torres (Re-Joint Records, All Bay Productions)
Mr. Torres has held it down as a vendor for many of the past Dig Dug events, and we are very excited to hear some selections from his legendary collection. Though a specialist in soul and funk from the Bay Area, we’re not quite sure what to expect when he takes the decks.

Peep Justin’s ‘Break Up Letters’ mix full of heartbreaking, unreleased soul ballads here.

+ DJ Platurn (Oakland Faders, Music Machine)
Platurn is one of the finest DJs in the Bay area and beyond. He is a prolific and award-winning battle DJ, mixtape DJ, and, more recently, club rocker. He has promised to bring out the funk records that he loves but can’t play anywhere else.

Enjoy these super tight Platurn collaborations!

Jamie Lidell- Jim

jlidell Jamie Lidell Jim

‘Jim’ is Jamie Lidell’s third & latest album effort out on prolific English label Warp Records. Lidell ditches the electronics much of his early work had for a more raw, organic, heart-felt mixture of soul & r&b that shows his growth as a musician and singer. This is a very good crossover album that may even appeal to fans of Amy Winehouse or the like…

The first single off the album, ‘Little Bit Of Feelgood’, is released with official remixes by Mr. Oizo & Senor Coconut. Here is the original album version.

Hot Chip: ‘Ready for the Floor’ with remixes by Diplo, Soulwax, Jesse Rose & Marian Pramberger / Hot Chip’s remix of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Rehab’

hotchip Hot Chip: Ready for the Floor with remixes by Diplo, Soulwax, Jesse Rose & Marian Pramberger / Hot Chips remix of Amy Winehouses Rehab

British indietronica boys Hot Chip new record, ‘Made in the Dark’ dropped last week and, oh man, it’s the jam. Released on Astralwerks (they can do no wrong!), ‘Made in the Dark’ takes us through the the dark and the light—providing soft and thoughtful hymns that leave our ears dilated and inexpectant for the next blazing and glorious indie/dance groove. In other terms, the new record is a exciting and joyful music journey.

Anyone recall, ‘Shake a Fist’ that we hosted briefly last year? That track holds down track 2 among thirteen. Still fantastic, but let’s have another, a beautiful indie pop song titled, ‘Ready for the Floor’, with it’s official remixes by Floridian Hollertronix homeboy Diplo, the undeniably supreme Ghentlemen Soulwax and German houser Jesse Rose. Additionally a fine bootleg electro remix from one Marian Pramberger out of Austria.

And for good measure—because we’re still not sick of this remix, and ’cause our missingtoof girl got a buncha Grammys last week—we’re bringing back Hot Chip’s remix of ‘Rehab’. So heat.

Erykah Badu – ‘Honey (Captain Planet Remix)’

erykahbadu Erykah Badu Honey (Captain Planet Remix)

This track is blatantly swiped from Soul Sides (if you like the funk & soul, they can’t be beat, really). But, damned if I can’t help myself, this cut by soulful funkstress Erykah Badu as remixed by Captain Planet of Soul-Sides.com is so smooth—so ill. Badu has been out of the limelight and hasn’t released thing new since 2003’s ‘Worldwide Underground’, but this February 26th brings her 4th studio album, ‘New AmErykah, Pt. One: 4th World War’. This jam sounds like a return to form and the remix brings the straight heat.

Gnarls Barkley: ‘Run’ from new album ‘The Odd Couple’? / Goodie Mob classics

gnarlsbarkley Gnarls Barkley: Run from new album The Odd Couple? / Goodie Mob classics

Gnarls Barkley, the eccentric powerhouse consisting of equal parts producer extraordinaire, Dangermouse and soulful rapper/singer Cee Lo are at it again. Surfacing last week, ‘Run’ is rumored to be a new recording that is among a few dozen handfuls in the running for the sophomore record, ‘The Odd Couple’, which is slated for a April release. We’ll see if this ends up on the finished record. If it doesn’t, it’s another testament to their talent that they can throw these kinds of tracks away.

Removed by request

Through the ’90s Cee-Lo got his start in the ATL rap group Goodie Mob, of which he is still a member (alhtough individual members are currently pursuing solo projects). For me, Goodie Mob really helped solidify ATL as a force to be reckoned with—in a time when far-reaching rap records were dominated by NY and LA. I ran these tracks into the ground on weekly basis for years. Goodie Mob is a very different animal to Gnarls Barkley, but that’s what makes Cee-Lo such a dynamic talent.

Funky Sole: The best funk & soul club in L.A. rides again

funkysole Funky Sole: The best funk & soul club in L.A. rides again

Funky Sole has been one of the best things going for Hollywood for six years now. Created and presided over by Miles of Breakestra and Egon from Stones Throw with frequent help from “unofficial third partner” Cut Chemist and occasional drop-ins from DJ Shadow, J.Rocc, Peanut Butter Wolf and tons more of the most impressive names in the world of crate digging. The sound at Funky Sole is eclectic and runs the gamut from rare funk, soul, and psychedelic rock to Afro-Latin, Bollywood and bossa-jazz to rare groove and the earliest hip-hop.

Tonight is special for Funky Sole, as it marks the beginning of a new era in a new venue. After making itself comfortable at Star Shoes in Hollywood since it’s inception, the event makes its move to Jimmy’s Lounge down the street (because Star Shoes is no more. R.I.P.) for the first time tonight!

This post is a good excuse to post some funk and soul. These tracks are an attempt to capture just a drop of the flavor of sound that you might hear at Funky Soul. We haven’t posted any funk & soul, but damn, I live for this shit and want to share. It’s all upbeat and we hope you’re with it!
