Bay Area-based electronic/synth/dark/coldwave duo The Sixteens have been one of my absolute favorite bands since their ‘Casio’ album came out years ago on Cochon Records.

If you’re fan of ‘proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and/or no-wave’, then The Sixteens are a good place to continue your love of said genres!

Here are two tracks taken from their latest album on awesome label Hungry Eye Records, entitled ‘Into the Goldwave of Future Non-Rip Off’.

Frankmusik is a 21 year old producer, songwriter from Thornton Heath South East London. He has lived there all his life and one day decided that it was high time that he made some sexy synth pop music. With a combination of retro synths, commodore 64 samples, fast chunky drum riffs and tried and tested lyrics, Frankmusik has started to get the ball rolling in 2007. Earlier this year he released his first EP titled ‘Frankisum’.

Blitz - Second Empire Justice

Greetings. This is my first post, and I thought I’d start things off with one of my favorite hidden gems. Some of you may recognize the band Blitz as one of the most well known old school Oi/Punk bands. However not many people know that in 1983 they had a bit of a personnel split, with half of the band continuing on in the bland Punk style, while the other half released this beautiful monster of a Post-Punk album.

Second Empire Justice is what happens when a good melodic Punk band finally gets time in a real studio, with a real producer (Chris Nagle who earlier assisted the legendary Martin Hannet on a number of Joy Division and New Order albums).

I could go on and on about this album, but instead I’ll let you take a listen and decide for yourselves. This was one of the singles from this LP, and it is also one of my favorite Post-Punk songs ever recorded.

New Wave Tuesday: Boytronic

Boytronic was an electro pop trio formed by accident in Hamburg, Germany in 1983. The original name of the act was Kapitän Sehnsucht (Captain Desire) and in the early days they provided the soundtrack to live sex shows at clubs in Hamburg. Eventually they recorded a demo and sent it out to record labels and were picked up by Mercury Records.

They released their debut ‘The Working Model’ but it didn’t fare to well in the charts until Kim Wilde canceled a live performance & the boys were given her slot. They performed their track ‘You’ which was the single off the album & it became an overnight success.

In 1984 they released a 12inch titled ‘Diamonds & Loving Arms’ & later that same year another 12 inch maxi titled ‘Man In A Uniform’. Being a massive Gang Of Four fan, Boytronic’s ‘Man In Uniform’ is my favorite track theirs. It is by no means a cover of GOF’s song but there are many similarities.

All of the original members lasted until they began work on their second full length, but two couldn’t stand the pressure put on them by the label to be a super moneymaker & left the band. By 1988 all original members of Boytronic had quit & the label replaced them all & the second incarnation of Boytronic released a series of records between 1988 & 1995. All was quiet on the Boytronic front for a while, then in ‘02 one of the original members & a member from the second edition of Boytronic got together and began creating music again & still do to this day.

The last album all of the original members worked on titled ‘Continental’ goes for a 100 dollars on Gemm or you can buy a re-release import from Amazon New Wave Tuesday: Boytronic.

Grauzone (grey zone) was a music/art project started by brothers Martin Eicher, Stephan Eicher in Switzerland circa 1978. The duo used synthesizers, light effects and super-8 film projections in their act. Publisher of punk magazine “No Fun” Urs Staiger helped Grauzone in the studio and they began recording numerous singles & in 1981 they released their first & only full length title ‘Grauzone’.

Undoubtedly, the groups most known track has to be Eisbaer, which literally means Ice Bear. It reached the top ten on the German charts shortly after it’s release. Over the years the song has been sampled & covered by numerous artists.

In 1997 trance producer Frédéric De Backer released a tranced up version of Eisbaer under the moniker ‘Groovezone’ which quickly became a rave classic.

Grauzone only released their one album but they released a series of 7 inch singles over the years & in 1998 a collective called ‘Die Sunrise Tapes’ was released on Play It Again Sam records which you can get here New Wave Tuesday Grauzone. If you want prefer vinyl gemm has the original 12 inch & various 7 inches for sale, some going for 150 plus!

The Honeymoon Killers were a Belgian synth pop band started in 1977 by three friends. They recorded one album in 1979 but in 1980 they completed their line up with two new members & Véronique Vincent on lead vocals.

They were an irreverent bunch and had been known to throw raw meat onto their audience at live shows. Playing as many gigs as they could, the band pretty much took over the Belgian club and bar scene in ‘81. On their second album they covered Charles Trenet’s ‘Route Nationale 7′ which quickly became a radio & TV hit single in France and Belgium and the band even made the cover of NME.

The band split in the beginning of ‘85 right after their first Japanese tour & Yvon, one of the founding members died in 1989. Their original album ‘Les Tueurs De La Lune De Miel’ released on Crammed discs goes for 215.94 on Gemm! But I know fools ain’t rich, so eBay has your back with a copy for 9 bones.

Yo, we were upped on the next big thing by the Nick The Duke of Cobra Kai fame. ‘Sexy Synth’ producer San Serac of Massachusetts has been called one of the most underrated artists out there. And after listening to these tracks you will undoubtedly know it is true. Currently on tour with the Junior Boys in North America, if you are able, check out his live performance which we heard was nothing short of perfection.

We’re back from Coachella! First let me address what seems to be a hot topic: What in the hell was that crazy instrument that was featured in the finale of Björk’s set?

Of course, any of our regular readers in the audience already saw this post and knew the ‘crazy instrument’ to be The reacTable (read react+table), or, a “multi-user electro-acoustic music instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface”. And, if it’s not the original, it must be a facsimile based on the open-source reacTIVision 1.3 framework. All amazing things created by the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

The finale of her set was a new song titled, ‘Declare Independence’, from her forthcoming, ‘Volta’ album which is being released in on May 8th in the US and is available for pre-order right now on Amazon.

Presumably, the studio recording of ‘Declare Independence’ uses the reacTable that was employed in the live performance. Here is the studio version of ‘Declare Independence’ for your inspection—Listen and love:

We’re back with another edition of New Wave Tuesday & we’re also back on the ‘French Wave’ tip. This time we offer up this delectable piece of no-wave/new wave goodness titled Disco Rough by Mathematiques Modernes. Disco Rough was released as a single in 1980.

You can still find the 12 inch on gemm in very good condition for $8.00. Or, as Dr. Droy reminded us last week, this track was also released on the compilation ‘So Young But So Cold (Underground French Music 1977 – 1983)‘ on Tigersushi. The comp is an unfiltered look into the cultish no-wave/new wave movement which was taking place at that time.

Making music is a hard. I figured this out a while back & decided to knock that shit off. But all the amazing new music & artists which surfaced in 2006 motivated me to dust off my Casio sk-1 antithesizer which I had custom built, circuit bent & modded all to hell by a circuit bender in Ohio a couple years back.

Last year I also gave in to the call of Ableton Live. The program as most of you know is amazing. So small, yet so powerful. It’s a little expensive, but like with most equipment the money is well worth the investment.

But not all equipment is expensive & out of reach thanks to VST. I know some of you fools are Ableton pimps. I’m no Dr. Dre, but I have fun. Here’s some links to the VST’s I use the most. Grab these and add them to your collection.

SYNTENDO

Virtual Synth based on the original Nintendo 2A03 APU Audio chip created by VST master Jack Dark. Download it here (lots of other free VST plugins on his site as well).

ymVST

ymVST is a synth based on Atari’s sound chip. It was created by Atari chip music freak, Gareth Morris (also known as gwEm). Download ymVST here.

KarmaFX Synth Modular 0.96 BETA

Last but not least we have the Karma FX which is beyond me why this VST is free. The amount of completely customizable parameters is insane. It would cost you a grip to have a real piece of equip that can do what this thing does. Get the Karma FX here.

These VST’s are all free, but like with mp3’s you should visit the creators page & donate or actually buy their products. The most powerful VST’s are definetly not free. Such as the Mini Moog VST or the Korg MS-20.
