UNKLE - War Stories

UNKLE is a group that needs no introduction, but I shall try to introduce them any how. A British musical outfit founded in 1994 by James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy. Their line up once included super producer DJ Shadow. UNKLE’s 1998 critically acclaimed ‘Psyence Fiction’ featured a plethora of gust artists, like Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke, Badly Drawn Boy & Kool G Rap. The group has remixed everyone from Beck and Blur to The Verve.

‘War Stories’ is the groups first full length release since their 2004 ‘Never, Never, Land’ which employed Pulp’s Jarvis Crocker on one of the tracks. This release guest vocalists include Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Ian Ashbury (The Cult), 3D (Massive Attack), The Duke Spirit, Autolux and Gavin Clark (Clayhill).

& for old time sake:

The CD was released stateside on July 24th and there is a 2 CD limited edition version available which comes beautifully designed slipcase and 50 page booklet featuring specially commissioned paintings by Massive Attack’s 3D. You can get your copy here.

DJ Foundation - God Is Dead

DJ Foundation has been catching a whole mess of e-flack for his latest release titled (Have They Not Heard) God Is Dead. The title track melds what seems like samples of an Islamic prayer with samples of dirty porn samples on top of an old Gary Glitter track. It has people of the Islam faith in an outrage. Here’s some choice comments left on his myspace page.

fuck u ..see u in 2009 when the army sends me after u.

why would you clown on someones religion for your own fame get a fucking life.

why don’t you come out of your closet… chicken, i think you must be DICK… CHEYNEY & friends… sad.

MP3:  DJ Foundation - God Is Dead [96kbps]

On the flip side of the single is the track “I Shot You Babe” which marries Sonny & Cher’s classic with gun fire beats.

M.I.A.: ‘Boyz’ Kimono Kops Remix & ‘URAQT’ LuvTek Remix

OMG, so the new M.I.A. record, ‘Kala’ will hit stores on August 21st and is available for pre-order now. It’s produced by Switch and makes dancey people lose their god damned minds.

I caught up with M.I.A. tonight for her first of two sold out L.A. dates. You can catch her tomorrow if you jostle a ticket on eBay or Craigslist (like I did tonight). After L.A. she moves on to Chicago, then Baltimore. There’s still dozens of dates around the world and you can see if she stops at your city on M.I.A.’s MySpace.

After connecting with Diplo on what came to be her first albums, ‘Piracy Funds Terrorism’ and ‘Arular’, she enlisted the other half of Hollertronix, Low Budget to be her ‘Kala’ tour DJ. M.I.A. is a smart cookie when it comes to choosing colaborators.

And interestingly, anyone buys her new CD single for ‘Boyz’, gets enhanced content including audio of ‘Boyz’ broken down into parts for D.I.Y. remixes. So get to it and send ‘em here (buy on Amazon)! Remixers and would-be remixers should check out our VST archive for some goodies.

First out of the gate with a really great ‘Boyz’ remix was German producer Kimono Cops who set the bar high:

MP3: M.I.A. - Boyz (Kimono Kops Mix)

But, my favorite new M.I.A. remix (of a 2005 track) right now comes from one of our favorite peoples, DJ LuvTek of Los Angeles, whom you might remember from his brilliantly mixed, ‘Do It at the Disco Mixtape‘ which we posted recently. Coincidentally, I checked out his weekly club, Genre for the first time tonight after the M.I.A. show and the shit was proper! Thurr were teenagers making out, gays giving each other hand jobs, stylish dudes, cute girls, drunk brawls and, of course, loud party music for loud party people. What more could you ask for? Seeing a dude get a glock 9mm put to his head while waking to your car afterward? Nope! Saw that too! Genre’s got it all! See wuz up every Monday night at Cinespace in Hollywood; Strictly for the 18+ set.

The tangent was for dramatic effect! Now, without mo’ adieu, hear the LuvTek remix of ‘URAQT’:

And if you didn’t catch the Risk One edit of ‘Galang’ then get educated in the M.I.A. archives.

New Wave Tuesday: Blitz - Second Empire Justice

Blitz - Second Empire Justice

Greetings. This is my first post, and I thought I’d start things off with one of my favorite hidden gems. Some of you may recognize the band Blitz as one of the most well known old school Oi/Punk bands. However not many people know that in 1983 they had a bit of a personnel split, with half of the band continuing on in the bland Punk style, while the other half released this beautiful monster of a Post-Punk album.

Second Empire Justice is what happens when a good melodic Punk band finally gets time in a real studio, with a real producer (Chris Nagle who earlier assisted the legendary Martin Hannet on a number of Joy Division and New Order albums).

I could go on and on about this album, but instead I’ll let you take a listen and decide for yourselves. This was one of the singles from this LP, and it is also one of my favorite Post-Punk songs ever recorded.

MP3: Blitz - Solar

Here’s a couple more as well.

MP3: Blitz - Flowers and Fire

MP3: Blitz - Underground

There isn’t a whole lot of info on this album out on the net, but you can still pick up a copy of the album through Amazon, and Cherry Red Records.

Justice - Phantom + Phantom pt. II (Troublemaker Edit)

I heard the original track and knew I had to fuck with it” says Hollyrock’s Troublemaker about Justice’s Phantom. And Fuck with it he did. There’s a gaggle of remixes and re-works out there of Phantom but this one it at the top of the stack. It’s programmed like a DnB track, dark and hard as hell, with crackin’ drums, and at that friendly club tempo.

MP3:  Justice - Phantom + Phantom pt. II (Troublemaker Edit)

And, if you guys slept on Pump ‘n Dump - “Let’s Meat Girls” (Troublemaker side project) which we posted back in May peep the write up in Fader. Add Troublemaker on myspace and browse his tracks on imeem.

Dragonette - Take It Like A Man (RAC Mix)

Canadian electro-rockers Dragonette just released their ‘Take It Like A Man’ single on iTunes & Amazon last week and included on the disc is our friends The Remix Artist Collective’s rework of the track. We told you they were going to get big. Get them to go to work on some of your tracks before you can’t afford them anymore!

MP3:  Dragonette - Take It Like A Man (RAC Mix)

Check the RAC tag for more remixes and get in touch with them on their website. Dragonette is on myspace and they are currently finishing up their UK tour.

I survived Daft Punk 7/27/07!

Can barely believe it, but I’m still alive. Survived the incredible weekend in one piece & didn’t wake up in any holding tanks. Gotta give a big thanks to Lori at MAS-Fovever, Throne Of Blood and XLR8R for hooking up the pair of tickets to the Daft Punk /Rapture / Kavinsky / SebastiAn show at the Greek Theater this Friday. Shit was mind blowing, earth shattering & life changing!

And the after party was INSANE as well! The line up was Jefrodisiac & Richie Panic (Blow Up / Frisco Disco) The Throne Of Blood Crew & Ed Banger boys Kavinsky & SebastiAn. Despite the mass amounts of alcohol consumed the memories made that night will not soon be forgot.

If any of y’all were at either the show or the after party or both, let us know what you thought & if you got pics, POST ‘em in the comments!

Funky Sole: The best funk & soul club in L.A. rides again

Funky Sole has been one of the best things going for Hollywood for six years now. Created and presided over by Miles of Breakestra and Egon from Stones Throw with frequent help from “unofficial third partner” Cut Chemist and occasional drop-ins from DJ Shadow, J.Rocc, Peanut Butter Wolf and tons more of the most impressive names in the world of crate digging. The sound at Funky Sole is eclectic and runs the gamut from rare funk, soul, and psychedelic rock to Afro-Latin, Bollywood and bossa-jazz to rare groove and the earliest hip-hop.

Tonight is special for Funky Sole, as it marks the beginning of a new era in a new venue. After making itself comfortable at Star Shoes in Hollywood since it’s inception, the event makes its move to Jimmy’s Lounge down the street (because Star Shoes is no more. R.I.P.) for the first time tonight!

This post is a good excuse to post some funk and soul. These tracks are an attempt to capture just a drop of the flavor of sound that you might hear at Funky Soul. We haven’t posted any funk & soul, but damn, I live for this shit and want to share. It’s all upbeat and we hope you’re with it!

MP3: Lou Courtney - Hey Joyce

MP3: Lee Dorsey - A Lover Was Born

MP3: Fred Wesley & the J.B.’s - Blow Your Head

MP3: James Brown - Get on the Good Foot

MP3: Betty Davis - If I’m in Luck I Might Get Picked Up

MP3: Tali Bong - Koto Mata

MP3: Jimmy Cliff - Let’s Dance

MP3: Eddie Bo - Check Your Bucket

MP3: Foster Sylvers - Misdemeanor

MP3: Breakestra - At the End of the Day

If you dig this stuff, then you ought to know that there’s tons of great compilations out there. Definitely worth looking into are Keb Darge’s compilations for sale on Amazon (or just go get your fingers dusty).

Sole and the Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers

anticon artist Sole, known to his parents as Tim Holland, will release Sole and the Skyrider Band, his first album recorded entirely with a live band on Oct. 23. Although Sole’s last full length came out well over 2 years ago, the rapper has kept busy touring and also playing under his alias ‘mansbestfriend’.

Sole met the Orlando based three-piece Skyrider after returning home from living abroad. Skyrider relocated to Flagstaff, Arizona, where Sole has been living since, enjoying the heat and making music. Wrap your PC speakers around “Shipwreckers” a track where Sole jacks the hook from the Guy Debord film, Refutation of All Judgments.

MP3:  Sole and the Skyrider Band - Shipwreckers

The album will be released October 23rd on anticon, of course. And because Bumpsdick & I used be real big on the backpack-indie-rap and because our anticon tag was severely lacking, here’s a cornucopia of my old anticon related faves:

MP3:  Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Candle

MP3:  Atmosphere - Trying To Find A Balance

MP3:  Themselves - Thisboutthecitytoo [Recommended]

MP3:  Boom Bip & Doseone - The Bird Catcher

MP3:  Atmosphere - Summer Song

MP3:  13 & God - Men of Station

MP3:  Atmosphere - If I Was Santa Claus

Surely you have all these albums in your collection but if one of the homies borrowed a copy and never gave it back you can re-up here.

Chromeo: “Tenderoni” video & remixes / “Fancy Footwork” remixes

Chromeo - Tenderoni

Chromeo is the duo of fantastically talented best-friends Dave 1 & P-Thugg. They are frequently referenced for their only-half-way-kidding self-description of being, “the only successful Arab and Jewish collaboration since the beginning of time!” Dave is the Jew and Pee is the Arab, but I don’t care about no things but the music!

Chromeo is back in 2007 with their critically-acclaimed sophomore album, ‘Fancy Footwork’. An album that follows “Electrofunk” trend established with their debut album, 2004’s ‘She’s in Control’.

The video above is their first official video from ‘Fancy Footwork’. Directed by Jérémie Rozan & Martial Schmeltz with the Surface To Air agency in Paris, ‘Tenderoni’ is fun and fresh. Surface to Air is also responsible for all the recent Chromeo artwork for the singles and album, not to mention a little video called ‘Never Be Alone‘ by Justice vs Simian.

Take the tune from the video with you. You love it! Or, maybe you’ll like the MSTRKRFT or Sinden remix instead?

MP3: Chromeo - Tenderoni

MP3: Chromeo - Tenderoni (MSTRKRFT Remix)

MP3: Chromeo - Tenderoni (Sinden Remix)

The track ‘Tenderoni’ has remixes and is catching up, but, still not nearly as many as their dance-party pleaser, ‘Fancy Footwork’, which got re-works by Guns’N'Bombs, Surkin, d.i.m. and more. There are many different ways to get yr footwerk fancy:

MP3: Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Guns’N'Bombs Remix)

MP3: Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (Surkin Rogue Teens Remix)

MP3: Chromeo - Fancy Footwork (d.i.m. Remix)

And for good measure (cuz we we were long overdue on a Chromeo post!), a Bloc Party remix of ‘Needy Girl’, the single from ‘She’s in Control’. I adore this remix!

MP3: Chromeo - Needy Girl (Bloc Party Remix)

Now everything Chromeo does is brilliant and we highly recommend the albums, ‘Fancy Footwork’ and ‘She’s in Control’ from Amazon. Additional sources to buy (and sample) are found on Chromeo’s MySpace or their official site.

Ohhh! And don’t forget Chromeo plays Hollywood tonight at Cinespace, and again on Thursday at the EchoPlex in Echo Park with a San Diego date inbetween. Then they’re off to Europe! Check the MySpace for tour dates and locations.
