Kanye West joins Ed Bangers’ So-Me live in Hollywood

kanyesome Kanye West joins Ed Bangers So-Me live in HollywoodKanye West facing off with Ed Banger’s So-Me

Tonight Kanye West made a special appearance in the DJ booth, backing, of all people in the world, Ed BangersSo-Me! This went down at Them Jeans and Steve Aoki’s weekly club in Hollywood, Cinespace (Tuesdays).

This is funny only because of Kanye’s previous, and now infamous, tangle with So-Me, Ed Banger Records, and Justice at the last MTV European Music Awards (2006). As you might know, Kanye West had a small on-stage melt-down when he lost the ‘Best Video’ award to Justice vs. Simian’s ‘Never Be Alone’ (a.k.a. ‘We Are Your Friends‘) and discounted the awards’ “credibility” even when he had no idea who Justice, Simian or So-Me was! If you’re not familiar: view Kanye West’s nominated video, ‘Touch the Sky’ on YouTube, then Justice vs. Simian’s winning video, ‘We Are Your Friends’ on YouTube. Now, remember the antics that ensued at the MTV Eurpoe Music Awards as Kanye West calmly insulted So-Me (Ed Banger art director) at the award ceremony. See it (again?) on YouTube! (It really doesn’t get old!)

Stubborn as Kanye West is, I respect him for sucking it up and embracing ‘Electro’, ‘French Touch’, ‘Dance Music’, or whatever you’d like to call it (it has so many names); He probably realized that this music that we love is taking over the world and he ought to jump on board before the world notices he isn’t sitting on the cutting edge! Before supporting So-Me tonight, he made big news by sampling Daft Punk’s 2001 club hit, ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’. This track made his current single—what a nice way to save face and show he is now with us and not against us! We forgive you Kanye! You did a good job (and I wasn’t even going to touch it cause it’s been blogged to death, but now I have to):

…and I still don’t believe him at all when he says that his DJ, A-Trak didn’t totally hip him to what’s going on in the underground in the collaboration with Kid Sister on ‘Pro Nails’. But, whatev, in the end, all that counts is that dude is on the track and it’s bangin’! If you’re not up on what I’m saying, get learned in the Kid Sister archives where you can hear ‘Pro Nails feat. Kanye West’ and more.

…I can’t hate on the dude. Props for making Mike Myers feel so damned uncomfortable while simultaneously making a damn poignant (albeit stuttering) social commentary. WTF am I talking about again!? See it on YouTube!

…and ’cause I really do like Kanye, try this sort-of recent funny mixtape freestyle over Rich Boy’s, ‘Throw Some Ds’ from earlier this year. The original was talking about rims, but Kanye flipped it into a track about plastic tittiez:

P.S. Spoon played in the other room of the same venue and was the main attraction. They’re kind of a big deal—I love Spoon and they need some more blog love too—but soon! Come baaack.

’stronger’ is base, puffy/diddy-style wholesale track theft. it’s nothing but the entire hook of someone else’s song, repeated ad nauseam. the rhymes are utterly wack (can the man rap about anything other than himself?), and there’s nothing added production-wise other than a slowed-up BPM. that’s not art. it’s marketing. kanye west hates artists.

Although it’s more than slightly off topic, I know the kids here at the Toof dug the new Midnight Juggernauts single and i just wanted to give you a heads up that there’s some new tracks on my blog.
    Solid!

    @c money:

I’m following this post up another about that very thing. Our friends at Anthem Magazine sent us the Daft Punk interview from the upcoming issue and Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk) speaks on sampling and being sampled. Excerpts here in a day or so, the full interview on newstands in about a week. …If you’re interested.

  4. 4 c money

definitely interested, as it’s something i imagine a lot of artists have strong opinions about. thanks for the follow-up.

cmoney - you can’t slag kanye off for track theft when it comes to Stronger - he did a lot more to change it than daft punk did when they nicked Cola Bottle Baby. Check it here if you don’t know what i’m talking about:

i think the real controversy should be the fact that so-me & ed banger recs would want anything to do with kanye after his outburst at the awards show. i know, money talks, but still… kanye said it himself “Why you think, me and Dame cool? We assholes.”

  7. 7 c money

i stand corrected. thanks for the ear-opener, john. i had no idea.

french electro, french touch,… and the clothing style it’s similar to the “new rave” in UK.
all is mixing up, now with kanye also the US are becoming ‘poprave’.

So if my theory is correct and Kanye decided to hook up with Daft Punk when he caught them the year they were both at Coachella… then I expect Kanye to sample Spoon’s “Small Stakes” in 9 to 12 months.

  10. 10 Ivan

Kanye was there last night? I was too busy enjoying Spoon to care!

Good to finally meet you in person, by the way.

  11. 11 bumpsdick

    @ Ivan:

Kanye West backed So-Me in the other room ’til they threw the house lights on.

I saw most of Spoon then bounced to see So-Me and Kanye. Kanye didn’t do anything besides stand around and get his picture taken and let people fawn over him. You didn’t miss anything other than a spectacle.

Good to meet you too. I’ve been meaning to introduce myself!

kanye west is shameful. his music sucks. the only good album was his billboard debut; college dropout. now he can go into retirement for all i care. it’s too bad that he spent a million on a video and justice probably spent 30 grand and they won. maybe it’s because it’s A BETTER SONG. fuck kanye, and i’m from chicago. fuck kanye. he’s shamed america.

hey, i’m going to the daft punk show on saturday, where should i go friday? i like good house music. emphasize: good… what should i do? i know that paul van dyk is in town, but… i’ll pass. i wanna hear some good stuff from the west coast.

Man! you sure don’t get to see how much of a jerk KW is from Oprah! Oprah, you’ve betrayed me!

  15. 15 John

cmoney - no worries, kanye’s still a cock!

  16. 16 bumpsdick

So, Cinespace resident, DJ Dan-O let us on to why Kanye and So-Me are rolling together. Word is So-Me is directing Kanye’s next video and that’s why they’re both in Hollywood.

Kanye West is graciously eating his words and seems to be fully-fledged on the other team. It’d be nice if the video includes something small and humorous about the whole debacle between them.

  17. 17 steff

How in the FUCK did I miss this in LA?!?!

    SHIT.

  18. 18 Kanye SNiper

Kayne is a no-talented cocky ass cum dumpster.

He samples White people’s music and then claims to HATE white people.

All of his songs are someone else’s (probably someone who did not drop out), .

If you people are leading your life by Kayne’s Lyrics, then you will be a drop out low-life parasite like him.

Kayne (hypocrite) West is a spoiled brat who is riding the Coat tails of his father.

Kayne thinks he is a prophet, and that the Bible should be re-written for his plagiaristic ass.

Kayne has a chipped tooth(and ego) from all of the “biting” he does.
    \

HE WILL SOON FALL OFF LIKE ALL OF THE REST OF THE FAKES.. MILLI VANILLI FOR INSTANCE……

I hope you people have enough time to do research on how retarded you are for being a Kayne fan.

  19. 19 bridget

Everyone here is hating on Kanye.. I for one have supported and enjoyed his music from the get-go, and as cocky and obnoxious as he can be, I’d rather focus on what I see as talent than personality. He steers clear of the category that so many other hip-hop/rap “artists” fall into, one defined by unoriginality and stale content, by keeping his lyrics and beats fresh. I personally LOVE Stronger, and look forward to his new album. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of shit for saying this, but I think Kanye West is the one of the best hip-hop/rap performers today, and one of the few that deserve the title of “artist.”

  20. 20 haters

I second the fact that Kanye is one of the best performer writers at this present time!! staying clear of the BS corporate Rap crap that so many other people support as good rap music. and Kanye aint hating on white people he just selling stories for hype using the tools of the trade that america so love to use against black people. so dont hate on an innovator. plus the jump up on stage is just hype for kanye he aint stupid he loves to use the media stage.

dont see no one complaining about the sampling of chaka khan on music sounds better with u babay!!!! Thomas Bangalter for Roulé

  22. 22 rogers

i think kanye west is the best performer in rap music right now. anybody knocking the fact that he samples music to make his beats is an idiot. the
“sample” is just a tool of hip-hop and without it hip-hop wouldn’t be what it is today. kanye has made classics and anybody who says otherwise is a liar.

  23. 23 damn

kanye is a complete and utter C*NT. end of story.

  24. 24 Mr. Magurt

There is a picture of Kanye trying to get in on some turntable action but So-me is pushing him out of the way as in, “Naay!.” It just says it all. Ed Banger puts up with him because he such a popular icon, but in truth they kind of make fun of him because they know that they are way more badass than he will ever be. Ed Rec rocks the turntables an he doesn’t.

  25. 25 shacora williams

Kanye West I like your song it is very popular

  26. 26 shacora williams

I Love your song Kanye West

  27. 27 HEIT

hey yall, just to clear things up. Its about the music in the end. From all artist. We all have problems right? Kanye for instance, is a beat maker. Thats how he started. His lyrical spits? Im not really for it, even though he can do it. But people, if you know anything about cold dirty hip hop shit. His production is tight as fuck. His early ish, was actually slept on. Honestely, he does’nt belong in the electro scene. He needs to be back making hiphop which he’s dope at doing….stop encouraging him! Fuckin’ money ruins everything boy! It’s the truth people, no hate!

  28. 28 pop*

His speech at the Grammys was really annoying, and it was just as I was getting to like him again. He’s better than most commercial Rap/RnB artists out there as once u’ve seen one rap RnB video you’ve seen them ALL! but he really should stop thinking he’s such top shit because he sets himself apart from the mainstream. Thats what got him into trouble at the EMA’s in the first place. He didn’t know about any of the artists in the ‘underground’ music scene who were producing Rap and RnB songs that were different to that of the mainstream market - He must have thought it was only him! Whatever, he’s making shitloads and has tapped into the underground music market and its listeners - smart man!?
