Kanye West facing off with Ed Banger’s So-MeTonight Kanye West made a special appearance in the DJ booth, backing, of all people in the world, Ed Bangers‘ So-Me! This went down at Them Jeans and Steve Aoki’s weekly club in Hollywood, Cinespace (Tuesdays).
This is funny only because of Kanye’s previous, and now infamous, tangle with So-Me, Ed Banger Records, and Justice at the last MTV European Music Awards (2006). As you might know, Kanye West had a small on-stage melt-down when he lost the ‘Best Video’ award to Justice vs. Simian’s ‘Never Be Alone’ (a.k.a. ‘We Are Your Friends‘) and discounted the awards’ “credibility” even when he had no idea who Justice, Simian or So-Me was! Now, remember the antics that ensued at the MTV Eurpoe Music Awards as Kanye West calmly insulted So-Me (Ed Banger art director) at the award ceremony. See it (again?) on YouTube! Stubborn as Kanye West is, I respect him for sucking it up and embracing ‘Electro’, ‘French Touch’, ‘Dance Music’, or whatever you’d like to call it (it has so many names); He probably realized that this music that we love is taking over the world and he ought to jump on board before the world notices he isn’t sitting on the cutting edge! Before supporting So-Me tonight, he made big news by sampling Daft Punk’s 2001 club hit, ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’. This track made his current single—what a nice way to save face and show he is now with us and not against us! We forgive you Kanye! You did a good job (and I wasn’t even going to touch it cause it’s been blogged to death, but now I have to):

’stronger’ is base, puffy/diddy-style wholesale track theft. it’s nothing but the entire hook of someone else’s song, repeated ad nauseam. the rhymes are utterly wack (can the man rap about anything other than himself?), and there’s nothing added production-wise other than a slowed-up BPM. that’s not art. it’s marketing. kanye west hates artists.

Everyone here is hating on Kanye.. I for one have supported and enjoyed his music from the get-go, and as cocky and obnoxious as he can be, I’d rather focus on what I see as talent than personality. He steers clear of the category that so many other hip-hop/rap “artists” fall into, one defined by unoriginality and stale content, by keeping his lyrics and beats fresh. I personally LOVE Stronger, and look forward to his new album. I’m sure I’ll get a lot of shit for saying this, but I think Kanye West is the one of the best hip-hop/rap performers today, and one of the few that deserve the title of “artist.”

Im not really for it, even though he can do it. But people, if you know anything about cold dirty hip hop shit. His production is tight as fuck. His early ish, was actually slept on. Honestely, he does’nt belong in the electro scene. He needs to be back making hiphop which he’s dope at doing….stop encouraging him! Fuckin’ money ruins everything boy! His speech at the Grammys was really annoying, and it was just as I was getting to like him again. He’s better than most commercial Rap/RnB artists out there as once u’ve seen one rap RnB video you’ve seen them ALL! but he really should stop thinking he’s such top shit because he sets himself apart from the mainstream. Thats what got him into trouble at the EMA’s in the first place. He didn’t know about any of the artists in the ‘underground’ music scene who were producing Rap and RnB songs that were different to that of the mainstream market - He must have thought it was only him! Whatever, he’s making shitloads and has tapped into the underground music market and its listeners - smart man!?
