Radiohead announce North American tour / ‘Weird Fishes (Jo-S Remix)’

In support of their successful pay-what-you-will digital album release, ‘In Rainbows’, last October, Radiohead have announced the first leg of their North America tour! And coincidentally our boy, N.Y.-come-L.A. Drum ‘n’ Bass producer Jo-S, has dropped this new ‘Weird Fishes’ remix on us. It’s true to the morose and “weird” nature of the original with just enough jump-up to get your neck workin’.

Under the Covers 4: WHY? does The Cure, Uminski & Hektor do Daft Punk, KT Tunstall does Missy Elliot, Jose Gonzalez does Massive Attack, The Network does Misfits, Ours does Queen, Cassettes Won’t Listen does Blind Melon, Metronomy does Britney Spears

Bay Area’s own, indie rapper (come group) WHY? of Anticon covering ’80s pop legends The Cure. WHY? drops his umpteenth album Alopecia, on March 11.

MP3: WHY? - Close to Me (The Cure cover)

Frenchman rocker Philippe Uminski, covering his most famous techno countrymen Daft Punk. Plus, more of the same from French indie-electro group Hektor.

MP3: Uminski - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger (Daft Punk cover)

MP3: Hektor - Technologic (Daft Punk cover)

Scottish folk songstress KT Tunstall freaking rapper Missy Elliot’s ‘Get Your Freak On’:

Sweedish singer/songwriter Jose Gonzalez covering the trip hop classic ‘Teardrop’ by Bristol’s Massive Attack:

MP3: Jose Gonzalez - Teardrop (Massive Attack cover)

New Wave group The Network covered horror punk legends The Misfits track ‘Teenagers from Mars’ back in 2004. The Network, if you didn’t know, released one the finest records of 2003 (seriously), ‘Money Money 2020′, and is rumored (with great evidence) to be Green Day incognito. (Similar to the recent emergence of Foxboro Hot Tubs in late ‘07—also a likely Green Day “secret” side-project).

MP3: The Network - Teenagers from Mars (Misfits cover)

Covering Freddie Mercury of British supergroup Queen is no easy feat. NJ/NY rocker Jimmy Gnecco of Ours is one of the few to hold a candle to the original on ‘Bohemian Rhapsody. Ours are a favorite of mine (like Queen) and set to release their third LP this year, as well as supporting Marilyn Manson on his upcoming tour.

MP3: Ours - Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen cover)

New Yorker indie/electronic rock band Cassettes Won’t Listen covering Blind Melon’s ‘Change’. This is part of a free 5-track covers EP titled, ‘One Alternative’ featuring the aforementioned, plus Pavement, Liz Phair, Sebadoh and Butter 08. Notice the ’90s theme. ‘One Alternative’ is a rip on the infamous cut-out bin favorite (and AIDS benefit compilation) ‘No Alternative‘. Download ‘One Alternative’ on Cassettes Won’t Listen’s official site while it’s available!

MP3: Cassettes Wont Listen - Change (Blind Melon cover)

And I’ll leave you with this fun take on Britney Spears heyday hit ‘Toxic’. It comes from British electro-pop cool guys Metronomy. When I listen, I picture Brit doing a fancy little polka dance in some fashionable short-pants.

MP3: Metronomy - Toxic (Britney Spears cover)

How y’all dig these “Under the Covers” posts? Who’s down to start a Slayer-style Radiohead cover band with me? We can call it “Slayerhead” and play at airport lounges (in hell). \m/ \m/

Radiohead’s 7th studio album, ‘In Rainbows’ out NOW!

Need we remind you that Radiohead’s 7th studio album is available now?! From InRainbows.com at a pay-what-you-like-price?! $0.00 is still an option (if you’re stingy; 5 is better).

Those who visit the site and purchase the special DISCBOX are allowed to download a bonus disc’s worth of content and will get the CD/LP package as soon as it’s available.

Here’s an interesting concept: a friend of Missingtoof is surveying what people pay for the thing; leave your figure at WhatPriceDidYouChoose.com. The results will be posted on Record of the Day at the end of October.

We wouldn’t leave you without a teaser! Love this new opening track. Ethereal Radiohead. Good Radiohead.

Radiohead’s 7th Studio album “In Rainbows” out October 10th! You pay what you want to pay!

After much waiting and speculation, Radiohead has released the details about their seventh album, ‘In Rainbows’. Still under the guidance of superproducer Nigel Godrich (ever since ‘The Bends’)—but now label-free—after fulfilling their contractual obligation to their former boss, Capitol with 2004’s ‘Hail to the Thief’. Radiohead is now more indie rock than your favorite indie rock band.

Now, get a load of this; the part that’s important to you: Beginning October 10th, less than one week away, you can get the full retail album through Radiohead’s official site and pay what you think it’s worth (and/or what is feasible for you). The mp3 files are yours to keep, forever, DRM-free and ready to be listened to and loved.

Alternatively, there is a tangible and glorious ‘In Rainbows’ “DISCBOX” package for sale that will ship in December—it’s pictured above, costs £40.00 (approx. $81) and will appeal to those who value vinyl LPs, 1411kbps CD masters, package design and album art (put me down for one of those types). …and yet, another option, a regular CD package slated for early 2008 release. But, the pay-what-you-will download deal is what’s current.

Leave it to the best rock band in the world to give this a try. An experiment in “gift economy“! Upon checkout at InRainbows.com, if you’ve selected the “DOWNLOAD” option, you will see the payment field is blank and the only guidance is that “IT’S UP TO YOU“. No, really. $0.00 is perfectly acceptable (you bloody pinchfists!).

Can’t wait ’til October 10th? The blogisfear is teeming with recent concert recordings of ‘In Rainbows’ tracks. So, instead of doing that, I’m passing the baton to Rawkblog, which has a done a fantastic job at collecting these various live recordings right here.

What I really want to do instead is post the classics (one from each album) and some of my favorite bastardizations of classics (a.k.a. the remixes)!

The Classics:

MP3: Radiohead - Creep (1993)

MP3: Radiohead - Street Spirit (Fade Out) (1995)

MP3: Radiohead - Paranoid Android (1997)

MP3: Radiohead - The National Anthem (2000)

MP3: Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong (2001)

MP3: Radiohead - Backdrifts. (Honeymoon is Over.) (2003)

The Bastardizations:

DJ Shadow remixed Radiohead in 2003, however the remix was rejected by Capitol because of the heavy sampling of George W. Bush speeches. DJ shadow pressed up some whitelabel 10″ singles of the track on die-cut vinyl that looks like a demonic Dick Cheney head (see it at Discogs). The limited run was given away with a purchase on his site some years back.

MP3: Radiohead - The Gloaming (DJ Shadow’s Would You Buy a War From This Man Remix) (2003)

An official remix by Four Tet that appeared on 2004’s ‘COM LAG (2plus2isfive)’ ep:

MP3: Radiohead - Skttrbrain (Four Tet Remix) (2004)

A pair of bootleg remixes from a pair of white label vinyls. House and breaks remixes from Phoreyz and Aquasky, respectively.

MP3: Radiohead - Everything in its Right Place (Phoreyz vs. Radiohead Remix) (2001)

MP3: Aquasky vs. Radiohead - Everything in its Right Place (2005)

Whet your appetite? Gobble up classic Radiohead at Amazon.com (CDs are not a dead format!). Get on Radiohead’s InRainbows.com to “pre-order” the download or discbox. It’s like desert, for your ears.

October 10th! We can’t hardly wait!
