Arabian Prince- ‘Innovative Life’ Out Now on Stones Throw Records

ap Arabian Prince- Innovative Life Out Now on Stones Throw Records

When I first heard that the good people at Stones Throw Records decided to release a collection of West Coast pioneer Arabian Prince’s music from the 1980’s, I was ecstatic.

Having worked with the likes of the Egyptian Lover, N.W.A., & The World Class Wreckin’ Crew (In which Dr. Dre was involved), it’s no surprise that the Stones Throw crew wanted to shed some light on an important figure in the electro-rap game. This is groundbreaking and inspiring music- and if you’re not familiar with the Arabian Prince or ‘electro-rap/funk/bass’ for that matter, get with it!

Here’s the title track taken from ‘Innovative Life’.

MP3: Arabian Prince- Innovative Life

This was the sort of stuff I grew up on. This was the music me and my childhood friends used to breakdance and battle to. This sort of music has been highly influential to me, and still, when I hear tracks like Arabian Prince’s ‘Innovator’ and ‘Freak City’, I seriously have an urge to dust off my old Adidas shelltops and ROCK SHIT! This is a solid collection of work from an equally solid and ‘Innovative’ musician.

Here are a few more gems in the electro-rap/funk/bass vein for that ass.

MP3: Jamie Jupiter- Computer Power

MP3: Egyptian Lover- I Need A Freak

MP3: World Class Wreckin’ Crew- Surgery

MP3: Megatrons- Rock The Planet

Gucci Crew’s classic track, ‘Sally That Girl’ isn’t exactly electro-funk- more Miami Bass rather, but it definitely has its place in this feature…

DBS’ track ‘Arabian Dreams’ isn’t from the 80’s, but is highly influenced from the West Coast electro-funk/Miami Bass sound…

MP3: Dynamic Bass System- Arabian Dreams

Earlier this year, Kittens also did a familiar post about electro-rap/funk/bass. You should definitely get more knowledge on HERE.

Old Rap Wednesdays: West Coast Rap All Stars

Usually Bumpsdick holds you guys down with Old Rap Wednesday, but I too like rap & I do like it old.

I am not the hip hop historian that Bumps is; I can’t give you the a whole background story nor draw references to samples used & it’s affect on todays music. But I can lay on you a dope track from the past.

You guys remember this 1990 cut which featured a whole cornucopia of then rap kings & queens including Eazy E, Dr. Dre, Tone Loc, JJ Fad, Young MC, Digital Underground & more? The track even had the unforgettable voice of Michel’le on the chorus.

This shit was like the “We Are The World” for our generation. You can pick up the CD single of this track from amazon Old Rap Wednesdays: West Coast Rap All Stars.

The East Coast Post.

 The East Coast Post.

I don’t know what your high school was like, but around ‘96, ‘97 when Wu-Tang Clan was at their finest everyone in our school was all up on the East Coasts nuts. Throngs of students were coming to school geared up in bubble jackets & ear muffs in 80 degree weather. Timberland boots all untied & pants stuffed into the top of socks. Blond haired, blue-eyed California teens, born & raised all of a sudden had New York accents & every other word that came out of their mouth was ‘nawimeankid’.

Here’s some beats that were pouring out of Walkmen headphones all across campus at that time. Betta cop them shits, yo.

Killarmy - Wu-Renegades
Camp Lo - Luchini a.k.a. This Is It
The Firm (Nas, AZ, Nature, featuring Dr. Dre) - Phone Tap

Whatever happened to Camp Lo?! I still think Killarmy is doing something. The Firm made one ablum & fell off. You can pick up Nas’ new album ‘Hip Hop Is Dead’ from insound.

Word is bond, son.
