Dieselboy- Substance D

Riding on the coat-tails of Kittens‘ post on Photek, I couldn’t help but put something up about Dieselboy’s latest mix CD, ‘Substance D’, (A reference to Philip K. Dick’s novel, ‘A Scanner Darkly’) as I’ve been bumping this HARD in my car since its release a few months back.

A 2-disc compilation of unrelenting drum and bass not for the faint of heart, the first is a mix featuring the likes of Technical Itch, Evol Intent, SPKTRM, as well as remixes of MSTRKRFT & Computer Club. The second disc is unmixed.

This first track here is a fuckin’ SLAPPER. Knuckle up & jump up, you’re in for some shit. If you’re a DJ, the breakdown is perfect if you wanna transition your set into some electro or techno…

The first minute of this track is the calm before the storm, then the bassline hits and you know something isn’t right, something bad is gonna happen…soon…’Step up if you wanna get HURT!’

Ceephax Acid Crew: Basura’s Pick of the Week

Not intended to feature the latest music out there, my ‘Pick of the Week’ is to simply share & highlight music i personally enjoy regardless of timeframe. This weeks featured artist is Ceephax Acid Crew (Andy Jenkinson). Firmly rooted in all things electronic, particularly acid & drum and bass, Ceephax can be compared to many of the acts on Aphex Twin’s record label, Rephlex, as well as his brother Squarepusher. I’d describe his music as being rhythmically erratic and energetic with melodies that can sometimes detach you from reality…

Jonn B. - I Been Stalking You on MySpace (stalk us too!)

UK’s John B is one of my favorite DJs. He is the electro-rocker-glam boy of Drum & Bass. Over the past 11 years, his records have cycled through the jazzy, the dark and the techy through the first half of his career, then his signature Electro/Drum&Bass sound was defined with his 2002 LP, ‘Brain Storm’ and has continued on since. His sound is sometimes called ‘Electrostep’ Drum & Bass—it combines the sounds of sounds and themes associated with Trance, ‘Electroclash’ and New Wave with Drum & Bass. Often adding humorous tongue-in-cheek topics in his songs and employing some of my favorite low-key rapper chicks, including stand out performances by Star Eyes of Syrup Girls. It all makes for one very fun package.

John B. found cult status in 2005 via MySpace with his laugh out loud ode to internet stalkerdom titled, ‘I’ve Been Stalking You On MySpace’. This song exists in several forms and mixes, but this is my favorite. It isn’t new, but it’s still relevant and it’s certified banger, so turn the volume to 11:

Now back to John B.! Here’s another one from 2003’s ‘In:Transit’ LP that features Star Eyes and she talks like my dream date, or something:

And this other one off the same ‘In:Transit’ LP is nice:

John B. released his latest LP, ‘Electrostep’ in 2006. The title, of course, is borrowed from the term that was coined to define his unique sound (buy the album from Amazon). On it John B. tackles a pair epic 80s tracks for some interesting cover versions. Hear John B.’s take on Toni Basil’s ‘Hey Mickey’ and Soft Cell’s ‘Tainted Love’:

MP3: John B - Tainted Love (feat. Marcy Meow) (CD Mix)

The ‘Tainted Love’ vocals are provided by Marcy Meow, a former go-go dancer from S.F. (namely BootieSF), turned stripper, turned Spanish-language video-vixen. How’s that for multi-talented!

John B does remixes too, re-vamping my favorite Dirty Sanchez track, and slapping it on ‘Electrostep’.

And lastly, here’s a more recent remix of Bloc Party’s ‘The Prayer’ that I snagged off John B’s MySpace:

Mad Repeaterz: Drop The Lime - Butterscotch (FIXED)

Yeah we just posted some Drop The Lime the other day & we’re posting some mo’. But we just gotsta. We’ve had the ‘Let’s Lasertag Sometime’ compilation from Tigerbeat6 for some time now, we even wrote a post on it.

But you know how you buy a shitload of cd’s and once and you give them all a few listens, then they get lost among the masses. Well, that happened with this CD. From the tracklist I knew it was gonna be an awesome comp & it is, but I was cleaning up the apartment the other day & found CD again & threw it in the stereo & I’m hooked. So this weeks Mad Repeaterz track is DTL’s Butterscotch.
