Bearries!

brsk Bearries!

Bearries, an experimental electro-dance outfit out of Chicago, make exciting live-electronics based music that is refreshing to the ear, and I can only imagine how they must sound live. Based on some of the footage and pictures I’ve seen on their Myspace page, I’m sure they put on a hell of a show.

There’s just something about seeing electronic musicians live on synths and drum machines, twiddling knobs and pushing buttons on actual pieces of equipment that make a performance that much better than just say, seeing someone in front of a glowing laptop like they’re checking mail in front of an audience (No disrespect to anyone btw, it’s just more fun watching shows when musicians use real music equipment!!!)

Bands of the past like Throbbing Gristle and Kraftwerk (both of which I’ve never seen, to my dismay) to newer acts like Wolf Eyes, Meat Beat Manifesto, Solvent, and Adult. (all of which I have seen) do this well, inviting the audience to a more intimate and personal performance with every sound they command out of their machines, and in a way it seems Bearries do this well too… if you ever get a chance to see them live, do so!

Here are two of their tracks, both almost around ten minutes each. These are amazing electronic excursions! Enjoy!

Bay Area-based electronic/synth/dark/coldwave duo The Sixteens have been one of my absolute favorite bands since their ‘Casio’ album came out years ago on Cochon Records.

If you’re fan of ‘proto-electro, synthpop, noise, post punk, industrial, and/or no-wave’, then The Sixteens are a good place to continue your love of said genres!

Here are two tracks taken from their latest album on awesome label Hungry Eye Records, entitled ‘Into the Goldwave of Future Non-Rip Off’.

Poni Hoax- Images of Sigrid

poni Poni Hoax- Images of Sigrid

French indie/electronic band Poni Hoax recently came out with one hell of an album in ‘Images of Sigrid’, in some instances recalling bands like LCD Soundsystem, Who Made Who, Roxy Music, and Talking Heads.

Super catchy hooks + hummable melodies + basslines that stick like rice= Poni Hoax. The French did it again.

Here are two choice cuts off the super-solid ‘Images of Sigrid’..

Here’s “The Bird is On Fire’…Killer bass stabs. And more cowbell please..

MP3: Poni Hoax- The Bird Is On Fire

‘Antibodies.’ It’s that good new disco shit.

MP3: Poni Hoax- Antibodies

This track, ‘Budapest’, was the standout off their self-titled debut album, which features guest vocalist Olga Kouklaki and has been a Missingtoof favorite ever since it’s release..

‘Images of Sigrid’ was put out by French indie record label Tigersushi. Visit them for some more awesome releases!

Ellen Allien- Sool

ellen Ellen Allien- Sool

Berlin’s Ellen Allien is one of the hardest-working women in the electronic music scene (she DJ’s, runs her own record label, produces, and remixes). Recently, she came out with ‘Sool’, a brilliant album in the more ‘minimal’ vein.

With production help from fellow Berlinette and electronic musician, AGF, Allien delivers the goods and continues to push the envelope as well as solidifying herself as one of THE prominent techno producers out there today.

In contrast, here are two funky and melodic tracks from her highly-acclaimed album, ‘Orchestra of Bubbles’, which came out a couple years ago and was co-produced with another fellow Berliner, Apparat..

Warp Records Can’t Be Stopped

warp Warp Records Cant Be Stopped

With amazing new releases coming from a diverse array of genres and acts such as Grizzly Bear, Flying Lotus, Autechre, & more, Warp Records remains at the forefront of forward-thinking music labels, that’s why we here at Missingtoof love what they do and the music they put out.

Two recent releases come from Leila & Chris Clark (Clark).

Leila, former touring keyboardist for Björk, has had previous releases on Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label. ‘Blood, Looms & Blooms’ is her Warp Records album debut, which features many guest vocalists, including former Tricky vocalist Martina Topley-Bird.

Here’s a cut off of ”Blood, Looms & Blooms’ entitled ‘Mettle’; a heavy experimental downtempo track that creeps up on you like a bad trip..

Clark, since the early 2000’s, has been holding it down for the ‘experimental electronic/IDM’ scene. With his complex beat patterns and beautiful melodies, Clark sits well alongside his Warp labelmates like Plaid, Richard Devine, & Mira Calix.

Here, Clark gets 4 on the floor with this ‘intelligent’ dance music thumper, ‘For Wolves Crew’, off his latest album, ‘Turning Dragon’..

Mt. Sims- A Grave EP

mtsimslogo Mt. Sims- A Grave EP

Hungry Eye Records, home to well-respected bands like The Vanishing & The Sixteens, is now home to Mt. Sims (Who at one point used to be the musical vision of one Matt Sims, but is now a full-on band).

mtsimsband Mt. Sims- A Grave EP

Speaking in the most general aspect, with their now much darker, brooding sound, Mt. Sims would fit pretty well between some Joy Division, She Wants Revenge, & Bauhaus (Mt. Sims actually had some production help from David J. on their last album, ‘Wild Light’).

Here are two tracks from ‘A Grave’, perfect for any death disco:

MP3: Mt. Sims- Grave

MP3: Mt. Sims- Lost In the Dark

What I like about Mt. Sims is, whether as a solo project or a band, they are musically adaptable. Having released two previous (more nu-electro-club sounding) albums on dance music juggernaut label International Deejay Gigolos and having toured with the likes of big-name acts like Ladytron & Peaches, we hear how versatile Mt. Sims’ sound really is.

Here are two cuts off of Mt. Sims’ first album, ‘Ultra Sex’:

MP3: Mt. Sims- How We Do

MP3: Mt. Sims- Unspeakable

If you like the darker sounds of Mt. Sims of the present, you may find a liking to other acts over at Hungry Eye Records. If you like your beats more electronic and clubby, and enjoy Mt. Sims’ sound of the past, check out the International Deejay Gigolos website. Either way, you’re in for some great music. But who says you have to choose?? Visit both sites!

Sigur Rós- Illgresi (Them Jeans Remix)

themjeans Sigur Rós- Illgresi (Them Jeans Remix)

While on a train ride from Portland to Seattle, Them Jeans made a nice mellow remix for Sigur Rós‘ track, ‘Illgresi’, taken from their brand new album, ‘Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust’. (Translated in English for those of you [like me] who can’t speak Icelandic: ‘With a Buzz in Our Ears We Play Endlessly’)

This makes for a nice little summer jam and goes well next to some Lali Puna & M83.

Photek favorites

photek Photek favorites

Riding on the coattails of the last post, where we shared a remix from British producer Photek of electronic-punkers The Faint, I’d like to share another from the crates—A dusty 1996 gem known as ‘Single (Photek Remix)’ for archetypal electronic-pop group Everything But The Girl. Lead singer Tracy Thorn (perhaps known to our readership as the voice on Massive Attack’s 1994 single ‘Protection’), gives a heartwrenching delivery perfect for Photek’s moody producion.

Photek gained fans for his work in under the drum & bass banner—but with arms outreached into other areas, creating a career with not only d&b accolades, but numerous accomplishments in house, ambient, electronica, and film scoring. An active remixer through the ’90s, I consider Photek’s remix for EBTG his best—I come back to this song every time I get my heart broke (or at least I would if it weren’t for my stone cold pimpin’).

MP3: Everything But The Girl - Single (Photek Remix)

Digging deeper, sample some other variety of Photek. Different flavours of drum & bass: Serving up the ambient side on ‘Ni Ten Ichi Pyo’ (Two Swords Technique)’, which found a wide circulation on MTV’s original AMP compilation. Serving up a rare 2004 techy d&B B-side, ‘Baltimore’. Even a year 2000 Billboard Dance Chart topping house track, ‘Mine To Give’:

MP3: Photek - Ni Ten Ichi Pyo (Two Swords Technique) (1997)

MP3: Photek - Mine to Give (feat. Robert Owens) (2000)

MP3: Photek - Baltimore (2004)

And just when you thought this post wouldn’t get all bloggy, we have a contemporary remix from Photek’s 2007 Drum & Bass album, ‘Form & Function Vol. 2′ from blogtown favorites, LA Riots—who, as drum & bass expatriates, make a logical and experienced pair to take on a Photek production for the official B-side.

The time is near! Brazilian indie band CSS will release their second album, ‘Donkey’, via Sub Pop on 7/21.

Though they went through a minor lineup change (Bass player Ira Trevisan left to pursue other interests), CSS is still alive and well, and with ‘Donkey’, they continue to hone their craft with their infectious pop songs.

If you haven’t already, go and download their first single, ‘Rat is Dead (Rage)’ on their website.

Check out ‘Left Behind’, their next single:

Here’s one of my favorite tracks, ‘Believe Achieve’:

Having toured with the likes of Diplo & Bonde do Role, CSS embark on another tour that will take them through Europe & North America until around mid-September. Check them out if you can!

And visit their Myspace page for all the latest updates and junk too!

And don’t forget to pick ‘Donkey’ up at your local independent record store when it drops later this month!!

Graveleaf: ‘The Crusade’

graveleaf Graveleaf: The Crusade

Graveleaf, or N.Y. come L.A. residents, Thee Mike B and Omar Doom (a.k.a. Sir Graves, a.k.a. Doomington) have something special with ‘The Crusade’. The expedition begins briskly with funky little break, and builds up to a full on rave-siren peak-hour knob-twisting electro ‘bow thrower. Peak-hour sound keeping at 100 bpm? Woah. You’re too clever.

MP3: Graveleaf - The Crusade

In the past, we’ve shared Sir Graves remix of Thieves Like Us’s ‘Drugs in My Body’, which you can still d’load right here. If you feel it, give the recent cowbell-heavy indie-styled, Doomington release a look on iTunes. The single, ‘Teenage Shotgun’, comes with a notable remix by N.Y. mixmaster, Eli Escobar.

For a free treat, get at the recent, eclectic and brilliant, ‘Mixin’ It Up for Discobelle Mix’ that Thee Mike B made available for download on, naturally, Discobelle.
