Kanye West - Love Lockdown (Tom Wrecks Mix)

kanye_love_lockdown Kanye West - Love Lockdown (Tom Wrecks Mix)

Everyone’s favorite overzealous hip hop producer-turned rapper, Kanye West recently released the auto-tune ladden single “Love Lockdown” which he performed on the 2008 VMA’s and will appear on his 4th full length release ‘808’s & Heartbreak‘. The single recived mixed reviews from fans/critics. Tom Wrecks, a.k.a. T-wrecks from Canada’s world renowned Stylusts crew takes the track for a different danced up spin.

MP3:  Kanye West - Love Lockdown (Tom Wrecks Remix)

We were jocking T-Wrecks’ Bmore remix of Llyod’s ‘Get It Shawty’ last May and it still gets much play from us.

Holler at Tom Wrecks’ MySpace for more mixes and remixes for download. If you live up in Toronto, peep his calendar and see how he gets down. Kanye has a myspace too, if you wasn’t knowing.

Arabian Prince- ‘Innovative Life’ Out Now on Stones Throw Records

ap Arabian Prince- Innovative Life Out Now on Stones Throw Records

When I first heard that the good people at Stones Throw Records decided to release a collection of West Coast pioneer Arabian Prince’s music from the 1980’s, I was ecstatic.

Having worked with the likes of the Egyptian Lover, N.W.A., & The World Class Wreckin’ Crew (In which Dr. Dre was involved), it’s no surprise that the Stones Throw crew wanted to shed some light on an important figure in the electro-rap game. This is groundbreaking and inspiring music- and if you’re not familiar with the Arabian Prince or ‘electro-rap/funk/bass’ for that matter, get with it!

Here’s the title track taken from ‘Innovative Life’.

MP3: Arabian Prince- Innovative Life

This was the sort of stuff I grew up on. This was the music me and my childhood friends used to breakdance and battle to. This sort of music has been highly influential to me, and still, when I hear tracks like Arabian Prince’s ‘Innovator’ and ‘Freak City’, I seriously have an urge to dust off my old Adidas shelltops and ROCK SHIT! This is a solid collection of work from an equally solid and ‘Innovative’ musician.

Here are a few more gems in the electro-rap/funk/bass vein for that ass.

MP3: Jamie Jupiter- Computer Power

MP3: Egyptian Lover- I Need A Freak

MP3: World Class Wreckin’ Crew- Surgery

MP3: Megatrons- Rock The Planet

Gucci Crew’s classic track, ‘Sally That Girl’ isn’t exactly electro-funk- more Miami Bass rather, but it definitely has its place in this feature…

MP3: Gucci Crew- Sally That Girl

DBS’ track ‘Arabian Dreams’ isn’t from the 80’s, but is highly influenced from the West Coast electro-funk/Miami Bass sound…

MP3: Dynamic Bass System- Arabian Dreams

Earlier this year, Kittens also did a familiar post about electro-rap/funk/bass. You should definitely get more knowledge on HERE.

edIT: ‘Certified Air Raid Material’ Mixtape.

edit edIT: Certified Air Raid Material Mixtape.

L.A.’s hardest working, edIT of The Glitch Mob crew (with OOAH, Boreta, & Kraddy) is what’s up right now. His sophmore LP, ‘Certified Air Raid Material, was released last October on Alpha Pup (home of Daedelus, Daddy Kev, et. al), and it is certified epic—for those that slept, edIT has just dropped this mix’d version of the album cuts on the free tip, for your head-noddin’ needs.

The mix is total bang’d out glitch-hop with a little help from Los Angeles underground hip-hop heavyweights, The Grouch of Living Legends, Abstract Tribe Unique’s Abstract Rude, Busdriver, O.G. French club-rappers, TTC and Cali’s freshest, D-Styles.

Tracklist:

MP3: edIT - Certified Air Raid Material Mixtape [48:20 | 110MB]

If you love it, cop the unmixed Certified Air Raid Material on Amazon.

edIT just wrapped his Euro tour (wrapping up last night at Koko with DJ Krush). Now he’s headin’ back the the US (via BC)! Peep out dates and details at edIT’s MySpace tour page.

Once upon a time, edIT ran one of my favorite blogs, the gitch-tastic, Complex Player’s Club. It’s gone the way of the dinosaur, but I’ll never forget. Here’s a absurdly awesome favorite produced by edIT, with girls from indie folk band, Daphne the Painted Lady, under the Porno Mathematics guise. I’ll leave you with this:

L.A.’s Guns’N'Bombs are wise old record collectors. You probably know they crank out the finest gentleman’s techno, but did you know that they do the disco? The folks at Echo Park Records gave us this mix last week and it’s been the rotation for summer ever since.

MP3: Guns’N'Bombs - Disco Night at the Big Horse [43:54 | 40MB]

Out of the retro mode here’s some more good stuff in the form of a remix of Guns’N'Bombs Kitsune debut, ‘Nothing is Getting Us Anywhere’ from more of L.A.’s best, Acid Girls.

MP3: Guns’N'Bombs - Nothing is Getting Us Anywhere (Acid Girls Remix)

Can’t neglect these Guns’N'Bombs remixes, an eclectic array of mixes for my hip-hop uncle (I wish), Wu-Tang’s Ghostface Killah, iconic goth-rock band, The Cult and poppy Junior Senior (of which the ‘Bombs Turbotito was a member). All recommended:

MP3: Ghostface Killah - Charlie Brown (Guns’N'Bombs Remix)

MP3: The Cult - Sound of Destruction (Guns’N'Bombs Remix)

MP3: Junior Senior - Can I Get Get Get (Guns’N'Bombs Jak The Tab Remix)

Oh shit! Guns’N'Bombs tours exotic locals such as Tapei, Bangkok, Portland, Vancouver, Los Angeles and San Francisco to name a few. Full dates and details on Guns’n'Bombs MySpace tour page.

And know that the new single drops, September 16th; the label is tentative. Here’s a taster’s spoon of the new heat; check YouTube.

oldmoney Old Money: L.E.S. (Sky High) / Edits of Kid Cudi & Kid Sister

Our boy, Scheme from the A+, Attorny Street blog and two-MCs-&-one-DJ trio, Old Money, whipped up this new track reppin’ gettin’ high and low in the Lower East Side on ‘L.E.S.’ The track, in two mixes, is produced by Black Cracker of CocoRosie and Bunny Rabbit (remember them?) production fame. Ludachrist: ‘Ghost Busta Rhymes’ from ‘Bangfest’ mix

LUDACHRIST_WEB Ludachrist: Ghost Busta Rhymes from Bangfest mix

With the recent release of Girl Talk, I’ve been thinking about the mash-up. Girl Talk with his mass of bloghype, was quite a disappointment (wait, can one be disappointed if one has no expectations?) Considering the mash-up, I’m trying to realize the good and the bad. Ignoring the bad, let’s reflect on the good.

Sample-based mash-up records are easy to do—but hard to do well. The mash-up can trace its roots to Double D & Steinski records starting in 1983, these records were an inspiration and foundation for sample based hip-hop music and set the stage for similar records decades to come. Mash-ups can be eloquent like, DJ Shadow’s 1996 album ‘Endtroducing’ and The Avalanches‘ 2000 album ‘Since I Left You’, or game-changing party albums like Z-Trip & DJ P’s 2001 record, ‘Uneasy Listening’ or Armand Van Helden’s 1997 record, ‘Sampleslaya’. These examples prove that a mash-up record can be an artful music arrangement, and more than just a cacophony of familiar chords and choruses.

…But I digress. Everything has a time and place! And when you want to be in the realm of familiar chords and choruses, a record I keep coming back to, far more than any Girl Talk, is Ludachrist and their funtime, ‘Bangfest’. Ludachrist is the shits-n-giggles side project of Knick (of Evol Intent) and Ewun (a.k.a. Kill The Noise), and these skillful producers know how to mash-up a pretty good party record. ‘Bangfest’ has deservingly been all over blogtown since its Big Stereo debut last November, and is available for free in its entirety at Worshipludachrist.com.

Here’s a mash’d track pulled from the mix for your own mixing and sampling purposes. It takes from Brooklyn emcee, Busta Rhymes and the iconic Ghostbuster theme.

MP3: Ludachrist - Ghost Busta Rhymes

This entry coincides with Ludachrist’s first L.A. performance tonight, July 25th, at The Roxy in West Hollywood. ‘Christ plays alongside other badmen, Villains and LAZRtag. Worship Ludachrist!

Alan Astor: Remixes DJ Amaze, Spoon, Lil’ Wayne & Chris Brown

alanastor Alan Astor: Remixes DJ Amaze, Spoon, Lil Wayne & Chris Brown

Boys like pussy and girls like money—West Philly representer, DJ Amaze reminded you of these simple facts on his recent ‘BoyznGirlz’ track—a downset hip-hop track that while poignant in its wisdom, was still lacking something…

Enter Brooklynite Alan Astor, frequent DJ Amaze collaborator, singer/songwriter and electronic music producer. Alan Astor took what was otherwise bland production and gave it a properly banging electro makeover (Jenny Jones has nothing on it). With the highest esteem, I say that this track ought to be the High Powered Boys‘ (Bobmo x Surkin) ‘Hoes Get Down’ for Summer ‘08 season. So hot right now:

MP3: DJ Amaze - Boyzngirlz (Alan Astor Lectro Remix)

Alan Astor has also contributed commissioned remixes Mixel Pixel and, notably, indie darlings, Spoon on their latest EP, ‘Don’t You Evah’, alongside remixes from Diplo, Matthew Dear, and others.

MP3: Spoon - Don’t You Evah (DJ Amaze And Alan Astor Mix)

As an indie rock kid, Alan Astor had a pretty solid 2005 album, ‘Everything is Possible’ on Mental Monkey Records. In addition to quality originals, friend and N.Y.’s finest, Drop The Lime a.k.a. Curses!, contributed a remix. As did Oakland Anticon cats Restiform Bodies. The latter goes a little something like this:

MP3: Alan Astor - Fantastic Fantasy (Restiform Bodies Remix)

The goods keep rolling in, with these bootleg remixes, one new remix of Lil’ Wayne’s undeniable ‘Lolipop’ and another from R&B sensation, Chris Brown, which reached #1 on HypeMachine upon its release in late ‘07:
