Public: Metallica, When In Rome, & ELO Remixes + Mixtape

San Francisco native, Public (Nick Marsh) began recording/producing music with a 4-track tape deck at the age of 11. In his teens Marsh played in numerous post-hardcore bands, and in 2004 began an electronic solo project titled: “Marsh”. “Marsh” released one self-titled LP, and two EP’s during the two year span the project lasted for.

After his Marsh project & endless months of toying with samplers, drum machines, and a long list of music programs, Marsh had recorded enough solid material to birth a new project; Public. Despite the recent emergence into dance music, Public has built a large library of original and remixed tracks. Get your mouse pointers on these tracks that will make you want to dance, shake, move and perhaps even lean back.

LAZRtag gives Rhianna’s ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ an electro bitchslap felt back to 1972.

L.A.’s LAZRtag whom we introduced last month have taken on R&B pop superstar Rhianna for some hot remix love. This is where top 40 meets bottom frequency.

I love this track because it taps into a history of music: One of borrowing, sampling, reusing, reinterpreting—’Don’t Stop the Music’ employs Michael Jackson’s famous chant from his ‘Thriller‘ album 1983 single, ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’‘, which was in turn was nicked from Manu Dibango’s 1972 track, ‘Soul Makossa‘, widely regarded as the first (or among the first) disco record ever. This track is a snapshot of music culture today: LAZRtag recomposing a contemporary pop-princess’ track, who borrowed from the ’80s king of pop, who borrowed from the roots of disco, using Manu Dibango’s jazz and traditional Cameroonian music soil. How far we’ve come:

Van She: ‘Strangers’ video & Van She Tech remix

Van She - Strangers (Dir. Lorin Askill from Collider)

Aussie shoegazers, part-time remixers and Modular people, Van She have a return to form with ‘Strangers’, the latest track leaked from their forthcoming debut full-length, ‘V’, slated for an August release. This follows up the first single ‘Cat and the Eye’.

Van She is unique in that they are their own best canidate for a remix. Not many can pull off being rockstars who also produce jawdropping club remixes. That club membership card is held by, perhaps, by Van She and Ghent’s Soulwax alone. The evidence is below. Club dues are paid in full.

Save the Feist ‘1234′ remix, which is so good it’s untouchable, this 2006 remix for London electro-poppers I Am Finn is probably my long standing favorite and doesn’t leave my queue.

Van She will be touring the country that is also a continent in June. Austraila, support these guys they’re hometown heroes.

The Frail: ‘Addiciton (After Midnight Remix)’ / Remixes from DoBERMAN & The Toxic Avenger

L.A.’s After Midnight are coming out throwin’ ‘bows on their first remix release for San Francisco’s The Frail. You may remember After Midnight is one-half DJ Farron and one-half Philthy B, formerly of the Villains, whom we introduced you to last month with his ‘It May B Durty but Luv the Jurny‘ mixtape.

The Frail, who’s 2007 EP, ‘Count on This’ has been building steam and accolades on its own, are ready for another level. The level is the cluuuub. Travel teh levelz. ZOMG! Original and the remix:

Fake Shark Real Zombie!: ‘Designer Drugs (Designer Drugs Remix)’ / Remixes of FLOU, Hail Social, Protokoll, Midnight Juggernauts & QUEENOFWAR

N.Y.’s Designer Drugs are the dopest (pun intended). Designer Drugs have been steady racking up a discog of club bangin’ remixes and for their efforts have earned hella blog and mixtape love (the evidence). The two live crew dropped off this brand new remix of Vancouver BC’s Fake Shark Real Zombie!—an indie-hardcore-dance-rock band who’s 2007 album, ‘Zebra Zebra’ has been filling the void in my life that was put there by the untimely death of their contemporaries, UK’s Test Icicles. ‘Zebra Zebra’ happens to feature a song named ‘Designer Drugs’. Designer Drugs remixes ‘Designer Drugs’? This was meant to be:

DJs need oven mitts these club-biscuits are so hot! Keep the dance party going with the these delicious remixes from Designer Drugs bakery (it’s not really a bakery, it’s not even a mob controlled money laundering bakery-front for drugs, it’s probably more of a bedroom studio, but the former sounds more fun and I digress). Enjoy remixes of French synth-rockers FLOU, Philly Indie kids Hail Social, New England indie kids Protokoll, Melbourne indie darlings Midnight Juggernaut, & UK electronica act, QUEENOFWAR. Dig in.

Surkin: ‘White Knight Two’, ‘Radio Fireworks (Surkin 909 Edit), ‘Kiss and Fly (Tacteel Remix Edit)’ / Boys Noize: ‘Don’t Believe the Hype (Surkin Mix no.2)’

Design credit: Gaspirator

Surkin is the fucking man. Reppin’ Parisian label-crew Institubes, Surkin released his latest ‘Next of Kin’ EP on April 7th. Get set for three original tracks and one remix by New Jersey electronica-head, Todd Edwards. That’s four tracks of dancefloor fire, but you only get one from me—I’ve opted to share not the title-track, but instead to run with ‘White Knight Two’, a disco house track flipped with some stuttering vocal effects. The beginning has kind of a Bizarre Inc. ‘I’m Gonna Get You’ vibe—I’m a total sucker for it.

MP3: Surkin - White Knight Two

Always striving for moar! Here are a pair from last years remix album, ‘Fireworks Refired’, including a self-remix and another from versatile label-mate Tacteel. Also, one Surkin remix from German electro-god Boys Noize recently released ‘Oi Oi Oi Remixed’ remix album.

Cryptonites: ‘Glow’, ‘Hands of God’, ‘Can’t Give You Up’ & ‘Trippin’ / Remixes of Love Motel, John Nielsen, Russ Chimes & Arctic Monkeys

Cryptonites are a pair of bang-’em-out dudes from Switzerland who’ve been collecting blog nods and spots in DJs playlists more and more over the past year for their hitting electro. Now, on their eve of their debut EP, ‘Hands of God’, let’s give the boys a full push, because this is some hype business.

We first got hipped at Hupendi Muziki, then the crew, Discodust, BigStereo and pretty much e’rybody else. Good reason, as evidenced below. Peep the O.G. production. ‘Glow’ is the new track Cryptonites just sent over, ‘Hands of God’ is the single, the rest are mo’ bangers done bang’d out over the last ~12 months.

Beyond that, the Cryptonites have recently fiddled with Swiss indie kids Love Motel’s ‘Je Pleure’. It’s just the latest in a series of good remixes (bootleg or not), others from L.A. singer/songwriter John Neilson, London clubber Russ Chimes & British indie champs Arctic Monkeys.

Crystal Castles ‘Courtship Dating’, tour + mixes by LAZRtag & FITFORUSE

Design credit: Electrik Suicide

E’rybodys favorite electro thrashers, Crystal Castles, are hitting So. Cal. before taking an aeroplane to tour Europe. All this partying to promote their recent self-titled debut release. We’re stoked to have some some recent Crystal Castles tracks and remixes from L.A.’s LAZRtag (which is one part Luvtek, of ‘Do It At The Disco‘ mixtape fame and one part StellarDRV). LAZRtag have done nice ‘lectro’d up work of ‘Crimewave’, a track that can be fully credited to HEALTH and Crystal Castles as mash-up/remix, now remixed once again.

MP3: Crystal Castles - Crimewave (LAZRtag Remix)

And for the DJs (that’s everybody nowadays, right?), a friendly edit from N.Y.’s FITFORUSE (of ‘That’s Corny!’ mixtape fame).

MP3: Crystal Castles - Good Times (FITFORUSE Edit)

Sample this album cut, ‘Courtship Dating’, a track that we controversially linked to Timbaland’s ‘AYO Technology’ last September. I guess that’s old news by now, so we’ve brought that post back (no longer contraband, we hope). What do you think?

MP3: Crystal Castles - Courtship Dating

Buy Crystal Castles debut album on CD or digital download via Amazon.

L.A., come see Crystal Castles tonight, Saturday, April 12th with Guns’n'Bombs and others (as mentioned earlier) at the Local Heroes Warehouse Party. Or check them in Riverside on Sunday April 13th, at the Missingtoof sponsored Era Disco party. Europe, see if they visit your ‘hood on CC’s MySpace tour calendar. Good times, indeed.

Dizzee Rascal: ‘Sirens’ remixes from Acid Girls & El-P

Londoner and rap champion, Dizzee Rascal has a Mercury Music Prize collecting dust, garnered after his 2003 debut ‘Boy in da Corner’ got international attention for its clever blend of UK garage beats and hip hop grime vocals (at the just 19 years of age). But since then it’s been a bit quiet—at least in the US—Dizzee’s 2004′ follow-up ‘Showtime’ and 2007’s ‘Maths+English’ placed on the UK charts at #7 & #8, respectively, but the states never saw a proper release from the Dizzee boy. Until now—enter heroic hip-hop label Definitive Jux to pump some new life into the latest ‘Maths+English’, which is given a deserved US release slated for April 29th.

To get you all excited, we have a small handful of remixes by bloggers-gone-big-league, Acid Girls (whom a little bird told me have completed their first original production with Frankmusik vocals and it’s bananas!) and Def Jux ringleader El-P.
