Van She: ‘Strangers’ video & Van She Tech remix

Van She - Strangers (Dir. Lorin Askill from Collider)

Aussie shoegazers, part-time remixers and Modular people, Van She have a return to form with ‘Strangers’, the latest track leaked from their forthcoming debut full-length, ‘V’, slated for an August release. This follows up the first single ‘Cat and the Eye’.

Van She is unique in that they are their own best canidate for a remix. Not many can pull off being rockstars who also produce jawdropping club remixes. That club membership card is held by, perhaps, by Van She and Ghent’s Soulwax alone. The evidence is below. Club dues are paid in full.

Save the Feist ‘1234′ remix, which is so good it’s untouchable, this 2006 remix for London electro-poppers I Am Finn is probably my long standing favorite and doesn’t leave my queue.

Van She will be touring the country that is also a continent in June. Austraila, support these guys they’re hometown heroes.

Van She remixes Martina Topley-Bird on ‘Poison’

Our love for trippy Londoner songstress Martina Topley Bird runs deep (we told you so), as does our lust for Aussie techno-shoegazers Van She, that’s why I was ecstatic when I heard the sexy pair went half on a music baby (and don’t forget Danger Mouse did the original production for one hot Ménage à trois)! The tune came on my radio last this last Friday, part of The Crystal Method’s exceptionally good radio program “Community Service Radio” for Indie 103.1 (they stream it online, yo!). I immediately set out get that track(!), but sadly, it was beyond my reach. …Until now. Low and behold what’s just found its way to the ‘toofbox:

MP3: Martina Topley-Bird - Poison (Van She Mix)

We likes it! The full ‘Poison’ single drops on May 5th with an additional remix by British electro-rockers The Officers. Martina’s full length ‘The Blue God’ following up shortly after on May 12th, both released on London’s Independiente.

Under the Covers 5: Biz Markie & Beastie Boys do Elton John, Hot Chip does Marvin Gaye & Paul Simon, Dragonette does Calvin Harris and Nicky Vanshe & Dangerous Dan cover Daft Punk

One of the best things ever, and perhaps the cover that’s given me the most joy over the years: Iconic rapper Biz Markie’s cover of iconic pop “diva” Elton John’s ‘Benny and the Jets’, as it appeared on Beastie Boys‘ year 2000 anthology, ‘The Sounds of Science’:

MP3: Beastie Boys - Benny and the Jets (feat. Biz Markie) (Elton John cover)

Visit a place where Astralwerks brand indietronica intersects sexy, classic Motown-sound rhythm & blues by playing this little Hot Chip cover of the late-great Marvin Gaye’s ode to lovemaking.

MP3: Hot Chip - Sexual Healing (Marvin Gaye cover)

From that place, Hot Chip continue to move us to ‘Graceland’—finessing the legendary folk rocker Paul Simon’s original.

MP3: Hot Chip - Graceland (Paul Simon cover)

Those familar with Calvin Harris’s dance’d up show of bravado on his single, ‘The Girls’, from his brilliant 2007 debut LP, ‘I Created Disco’, will surely love this cover by ‘toof favorites, indie-pop heroes, Dragonette. The cover gives equal time to the un-fairer sex. Here, now, is the Calvin Harris original and Dragonette’s gender-swapped cover.

MP3: Calvin Harris - The Girls

MP3: Dragonette - The Boys (Calvin Harris cover)

Let’s close with something Daft Punk, because one can never have enough. This track by Nicky Vanshe of the ridiculously talented Australian rock/techno crossover act Van She and Dangerous Dan of Australian party monsters The Bang Gang isn’t labeled a “cover”, per se, but in effect, it’s just the same:

New Young Pony Club: “Ice Cream” remixes from Tiga, Herve, Van She & The Hooks

New Young Pony Club has always been deserving of the hype. And now we’d like to congratulate them for being shortlisted as a one of the 12 best albums of the past year, and thus, a contender for the #1 pick for the prestigious Nationwide Mercury Prize (wuz that? Wikipedia helps). Also nominated are several acts that we’ve featured here including, Klaxons (archive), Bat For Lashes (Archive), Maps (archive) and Amy Winehouse (archive). Also nominated are previous Mercury Prize winners, Arctic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal for their recent efforts.

This puts NYPC in some great company! Their debut album, ‘Fantastic Playroom’ (Buy it!) was a long time coming. Their break-through single ‘Ice Cream’ was featured in a major advertisement campaign for Intel, as well as countless mixtape, radio and club playlists all over the world.

Great songs become remix juggernauts. Interesting that ‘Ice Cream’ was originally released in 2004 on UK label Tirk Records before finding it’s next home on Aussie label, Modular. ‘Ice Cream’ is a great song and is absolutely a juggernaut. The is still getting it’s remix fix and just received some new remix jobs from, most recently by Tiga and, previously, Hervé, Van She and The Hooks, among others.

Pick up the singles and you’ll realize there are so many remixes of ‘Ice Cream’! Now seriously, Pick them up from Amazon and HMV. Strictly for the hardcore, NYPC has a merch site with shirts and mugs and junk. We gots one, we hardcore!

If nothing else, visit NYPC on MySpace and say congratulations or check their official site, WeArePony.com

We got a new toof.

This weekend we went and scored ourselves another contributor and a dope one at that. Welcome Jamie O. from the ‘Sco as the newest ‘Toofer. Give her a while to get used to the set up but soon she’ll be keeping you in the musical know & verbally abusing you in the comments.

Aside from having a totally awesome haircut and knowing way more about beats than you, she really knows how to cut a rug which earned her the nickname ‘Dance Attack’ back in the day. Check the vid to see the skills.

Song in the vid is none other than Van She’s remix of Klaxons‘ ‘Gravity’s Rainbow’. Any self respecting Generation Y’er already has this, but i’ll lay it down here in case you’re slow on the uptake.

MP3:  Klaxons - Gravity’s Rainbow (Van She remix)

The track was off the Xan Valleys EP, if you ain’t got it go out and get it. Klaxons are playing The Great American Music Hall in SF on July 11th. Check their myspace for more dates.

The Aussie Wrap-Up

Yo, patch reporting here. Just remembered I didn’t formally introduce myself in my last post!

As firstly mentioned by disaster, I was meant to be covering ‘the Big Day Out‘ but little did I inform him was that I didn’t get a ticket. Anyway, all I know is that my mates were LOVING The Presets and could not stop bragging for days. Also, I heard Justice (on the Melbourne leg of the Aussie Tour at the time) flaunted it up at the BDO and also Room680!

The type of music I love varies from Progressive Rock to Electro but I won’t go all 1970’s on you guys, that would be plain cruel.

Now, with my little intro out of the way… onto the goods. Basically, being a kid living in Australia (close to Melbourne if you want to know..), I just want to post out all the cool bands thats out here. Most, of course you will know, but that doesn’t matter & I’ve surely missed some but don’t fret!

Barrage (FERAL MEDIA):

From last.fm:
Melbourne (Australia) based singer and producer, whose style falls between post-punk / electro-pop romantics and contemporary, rough and ready electronica. Originally from Brisbane (in the north-eastern state of Queensland), Barrage (real name Mark Gomes) has released one album - Hero or dirt? - so far. He has also played extensively across Australia’s eastern states.

Bit by Bats (Shiny Records):

from wikipedia:
An Australian three piece originally hailing from Adelaide, now living in Melbourne. Forming in 2003, the band had existed just a matter of weeks when they laid down their first demo (later released as their first ep). They sent it in as a CD-R to their local radio station, Three D Radio, who almost burnt a hole in the disc from constant play, well before the mysterious band stepped out to play their first show. The songs recalled influences of early-era The Cure, Joy Division and Television and fused them with a fresh raw and rough urgency.

Bumblebeez (MODULAR):

from wikipedia:
A hip-hop/rock band. Their first album is titled The Printz, although this is simply a compilation for an international release, comprised of all the tracks from their first two Australian EP’s ‘The White Printz’ and ‘The Red Printz’ (known to fans as the Printz saga).

Modular Promo CD (2007)

Modular has been one of the labels to watch for a minute now. They are boasting a pretty mean roster with acts like like The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, New young Pony Club, Cut Copy, Wolfmother, MSTRKRFT, Soul Wax, Klaxons, Van She, The Presets & more. It looks as though Modular is trying to take over the electro/indie universe. & I’m all for it.

Speaking of Van She & Modular my Van She shirt came in the mail today from them & along with it a super sweet six song promo CD.

Jewelry by Alex & Chloe

The tracks are like whoa. There’s a Presets remix called ‘Hung Down’ which features the ARP Odyssey riff from Madonna’s ‘Hung Up’ (Originally from Abba’s ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’). I don’t think Modular is selling the promo so you’ll have to buy a t-shirt from them in order to get one. Or, know a super cool blogger, like me!

Tracklisting

1. The Avalanches - A Different Feeling (Paperclip People Remix) Avalanches Edit
2. The Presets - Hung Down
3. Van She - Kelly (Alan Braxe and Fred Falke remix)
4. Cut Copy - Going Nowhere (SebastiAn remix)
5. Bumblebeez - Repeater
6. Wolfmother - Woman (Avalanches remix)

Who loves you?

I think if you order anything from Modular Records they throw in this promo cd. So go buy stuff from them here. If you buy the Van She shirt, call me & tell me before you wear it, don’t wanna end up wearing the same thing to school! How Embarrassing!

Crimp Your Hair DJ’s - Justice - Phantom (edit)

A Justice ‘Phantom’ edit landed in my inbox this morning. The edit is by Philly floor rockers Crimp Your Hair DJs who have been doing the damn thing. Aside from being disc jockeys they have recorded albums as The Yah Mos Def & Birds Over Britain.

I heard they’ve got also got a Van She edit on the way. We’ll keep you posted.

I’m sure all you guys have heard the Phantom Faex re-edit posted in the Trashclub forum. Check this one out, sticks more to the original track. Love that doubled up bass at the 3:20 mark. Turn it up real loud & fuck up your parents house speakers.
