Bjork @ Coachella: ‘Declare Your Independence’ with reacTable

[Be warned: amateur video]

We’re back from Coachella! First let me address what seems to be a hot topic: What in the hell was that crazy instrument that was featured in the finale of Björk’s set?

Of course, any of our regular readers in the audience already saw this post and knew the ‘crazy instrument’ to be The reacTable (read react+table), or, a “multi-user electro-acoustic music instrument with a tabletop tangible user interface”. And, if it’s not the original, it must be a facsimile based on the open-source reacTIVision 1.3 framework. All amazing things created by the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain.

The finale of her set was a new song titled, ‘Declare Independence’, from her forthcoming, ‘Volta’ album which is being released in on May 8th in the US and is available for pre-order right now on Amazon.

Presumably, the studio recording of ‘Declare Independence’ uses the reacTable that was employed in the live performance. Here is the studio version of ‘Declare Independence’ for your inspection—Listen and love:

MP3: Björk - Declare Independence

And because I’m a total Björk fanboy, here are some more goodies that you might not have heard yet.

First, A remix of a classic by the always-on-point DJ Ayres (of The Rub):

MP3: Björk - Hyperballad (DJ Ayres Remix 2 Short)

Second, a cool little medley/blend by DJ B-Ju that we snatched from ChazBlog in this recent post:

MP3: B-Ju - Björk vs D-Styles (13 min. mix)

Third, some Vitalic remix goodness from a 2005 12″ white label:

MP3: Björk - Who Is It (Vitalic Mix)

And lastly, hear what happens when Spank Rock gets ahold of one of Björk’s brand-spankin’ new track, ‘Earth Invaders’ (snatched from Analog Giant, respect!):

MP3: Björk - Earth Intruders (Spank Rock Remix)

You can visit Björk at her MySpace or official site.

Many of the Coachella performances, including Björk, were filmed professionally and broadcast at the AT&T Blue Room, and there should be an archive of the show going up sometime soon. But for those who can’t wait, there’s plenty more ameature footage of varying quality, like the video displayed above, on YouTube.

A Number Of Names - Shari Vari

A Number Of Names are credited with creating one of the first Detroit techno songs, ever. in 1981 Sterling Jones and Paul Lesley’s track ‘Shari Vari’ was an underground classic & still is now. Many of todays electro/techno makers recognize the importance of this track. Detroit natives ADULT., Ectomorph & members of the International Deejay Gigolo family have all created remixes of this underground gem.

MP3: A Number of Names - Shari Vari (ADULT. Fembot mix)

MP3: A Number Of Names - Shari Vari (Ectomorph Dark Remix)

MP3: A Number Of Names - Shari Vari (The Hacker & Vitalic Remix)

YouTube has a video from 1982 of folks getting down to this number. Study it and go show them fools at the club what’s really good.

A sealed original copy of this 1981 12inch goes for 2 hundo on gemm! If you’re not that ballerific you can pick up re-issues for a tad cheaper on ebay. Right now there’s one going for $13.99. & Puzzlebox records released a 12 track remix cd in 2002. There’s a used one on ebizzle going for 3 bones.

Ed Banger Records Tour + Vitalic & Linda Lamb - Bells

Annnnnd. we’re back. Sorry if you saw the site looking ugly last night. Me & Blogger got into a fight. This design doesn’t look the way I really want. But it’ll do for now.

ANYWAYS.

My tickets to the Ed Banger Records tour arrived in the mail today. On March 24th I will be enjoying hard liquor with a side of hard hitting beats provided by Justice, SebastiAn, DJ Mehdi & Busy P @ Mezzanine. A lot of great artists have graced the Mezz as of late. Ladytron, The Presets, She Wants Revenge, MSTRKFRT, & The Lovemakers are a few acts I’ve seen there recently.

But the best live performance I’ve seen there would have to be Parisian hard techer Pascal Arbez, a.k.a. Vitalic. He performed all of his classic bangers off of OK Cowboy plus a few never before heard tracks. The only bad part was they had him so high up on the stage that you could barely see his bald little head bouncing around up there & I really wanted to see what equipment he had that made those crazy sounds. Maybe next time around.

This is a sort of newish track featuring Linda Lamb:
Vitalic & linda Lamb - Bells

Vitalic is on Different Recordings & the Bells 12″ is available here. Linda Lamb is on International Deejay Gigolo Records & pretty much any IDGR compilation you pick up, she’s had a hand in the production.
